Descendants of Valentine Mowery

Generation No. 1

1. Valentine² Mowery (Jurg¹ Maurer) was born Abt. 1760 in Shenandoah Co., Va., and died Abt. January 1838 in Rush Co. IN.. He married (1) Susanna (Susie) Zimmerman December 11, 1782 in Shenandoah Co. VA., daughter of John Zimmerman and Catherine ?. She was born Abt. 1762 in VA., and died Bef. 1827 in Franklin Co., IN.. He married (2) Nancy Eggans November 20, 1827 in Franklin Co. IN.. She died Aft. December 1834.

Notes for Valentine Mowery:
Valentine's surname is found with surname spelling " Mowery-Mowry" on most documents. Given name was sometimes spelled; "Vollentine". See Surname Spelling Variations in front of this book.
His mother, Anna Maria Maurer leaves personal items to her sons; Leonhart Maurer and her youngest son Valentine Maurer in her will. See copy of Anna Maria Maurer's will written in German in front.
Valentine is listed in his fathers will ( Nov. 1775) to receive 1/2 of the plantation ( 178 acres ) when he becomes of age. It is thought he became age 21 about 1781. See copy of will in front of this book.
He is listed on the Shenandoah Co. VA. 1785 census with 3 white souls. It appears 1 child was born in the 2 year period after their marriage.
In May 1789 Valentine & Suse sold his share of land in Shenandoah Co., Va. that he inherited (178 acres) from his father, to Henry Wilkins.
Valentine is listed paying taxes in Shenandoah Co., Va. records in the 1780s to 1790s.
About 1790, Valentine & Susanna Zimmerman Mowery along with some of her Zimmerman siblings moved to Anderson Co. in the northeastern part of the state of Tennessee.
Many thanks to Edward Zimmerman of Charleston WV. who is a descendant and Zimmerman researcher for sharing the following data. The Zimmerman family descendants have a letter written in 1871 by Daniel Krous a Zimmerman descendant listing data on the children of John Zimmerman. In the letter Daniel Krous states in part; "The second daughter, SUSANNA married Valentine Mowry. They first moved to Tennessee and settled in Powell's Valley. From there they moved to Indiana".
Valentine Mowry and a John Mowry are found paying personal property taxes in Anderson Co. TN. in 1805. The said John is most likely a son of Valentine Mowry.
No census records exists for northeastern counties of Tennessee in 1810. Valentine Mowery has not been found on a 1810 census to date and it is calculated that Valentine & family went to Franklin Co. IN. after the 1810 census.
He is found next serving on a Grand Jury, Nov. 1811 & Sept. 1812, in Common Pleas Court in Franklin Co. IN.
Valentine & Susanna Mowry sold 80 acres in Franklin Co. IN. in the year 1818. The land is recorded in the deed book as "Lands Sold At Cincinnati". The original records of the seller and date of said property to Valentine has not been located to date in Franklin, Co., IN. court house. More research is needed. The signatures on court documents in Shenandoah Co., VA. & Franklin Co., IN. are in GERMAN and are an exact match.
He is listed on the Franklin Co., IN. 1820 census with a male & female over 45, 2 females under 10, a male 10-15, and a female 16-25. He is listed on the 1830 census in Rush Co. IN. with a male 10-15 & a male 60-70, a female 15-20, a female 40-50 yrs. old. The author feels there could be 4 or more children in this family that are not listed below.
On Dec . 24th 1834 Valentine & 2nd wife, Nancy Egans Mowery sold 80 acres of land in Rush Co. IN. for $900.00 to his bother-in-law William Egans of Laporte Co. IN..
Court records state that Valentine died sometime between; Jan. 1st & Feb. 20th, 1838 and was a widow at the time of his death. Valentine's estate was almost a decade trying to settle, by his son-in-law Robert Hanna.
John Wilson a son-in-law, bought Valentine's bed and horse at the personal estate sale. John Wilson and R. Phepps has several receipts against the estate. The probate court records state "the amount of the receipts of John Wilson & R. Phepps were to be deducted from the dividend of the final settlement of the estate".
Court papers states Valentine owed more money to creditors than his personal estate was worth, therefore no heirs is listed receiving anything after all the claims were paid in this early court record.
Later John Wilson petitions the court in Feb. 1845 for his share of the estate. This Feb. 1845 court record states that there is about $534.15 on deposit in a branch bank of Indiana at Indianapolis from the estate of Valentine Mowery. (There was a depute over the remainder of his brother-in-law, William Egans's debt on the 80 acres that Valentine & Nancy sold. This $534.15 is probably a settlement from William Egans). The record also states John Wilson is entitled to one tenth of this amount, as there are ten legal heirs to the estate of Valentine Mowery. Who all the heirs are at this writing is unknown at this time. This author has enlisted the help of a former Rush County, IN. county clerk and others in trying to locate additional settlement records on where the said $534.15 was paid out. No records have been found to date on the final settlement of the $534.15.
It is noted to date, that the given name" Valentine" was not used by his brothers or sisters in naming their off spring. This raises the thought if Valentine Mowery was well liked by them.
Dina Grozev, a BULLA family desendant and researcher has shared her thoughts with this author on a SUSANNA A. MOWERY who married THOMAS BULLA III on 27 Dec. 1806. This family named a son Valentine Bulla and a son Joseph Mowery Bulla. Thomas (age 70, born PA.) and Susan Bulla, age59(b. abt. 1791), in VA.) are found on the 1850 Wayne Co., VA. census. Research on the 1880 & 1900 census records on the children of Susanna A. Mowery Bulla, list their mother born in TENN. It would seem very likely that Valentine & Susanna Mowery would have named a daughter Susanna and she spent some of her childhood in Tenneesee. This Susanna A. Mowery could very well likely be a daughter of Valentine and Susanna Mowery. More research is needed.

Notes for Susanna (Susie) Zimmerman:
Susanna was one of 8 children of John & Catherine ? Zimmerman. John Zimmerman is listed on the 1785 Shenandoah Co., VA. census with 7 white soles.
John Zimmerman bought 270 acres on 17 May 1790 from William & Eleanor Hough of Loudon Co. VA. This was part of a original tract of a 370 acre land grant by Lord Fairfax dated 14 Oct. 1780. The land was on the drains of Stoney Creek and adjacent to Col. Isaac Zane's survey called the "Round Top". It was located on the west side of "Cat Hollow" about 1/2 mile west of Columbia Furnace VA. and on the north side of State Route 675 in Shenandoah Co. Va.
John Zimmerman reportedly by his descendants to have lived first in Loudon Co. VA. then in Shenandoah Co., VA.
John Zimmerman's deed states : "on land where he now lives". Apparently John Zimmerman entered into a agreement with William Hough while living in Loudon Co., VA. to rent this land with the option to buy. He received the title to the land in a little over 2 years. William Hough was a large land speculator with holdings in several counties.
John Zimmerman died without a will in Shenandoah Co. VA. His estate settlement is in Book "E" page 274 & 472-473 dated 22 Mar. 1799. The heirs (Children) listed receiving money from the estate are; Daniel Bowman, Daniel Zimmerman, Peter Zimmerman, John Wilson, Michael Crouch (Administrator) & John Zimmerman Jr. Daughter Susanna wife of Valentine Mowery, is not listed receiving anything in this settlement. Valentine & Susanna Mowery reportedly by the Zimmerman descendents, were living in Powell's Valley Tennessee (north-eastern part of the state) at this time frame. The Zimmerman descendants are actively researching their line and a publication is planned in the future.

Notes for Thomas Cooper:
Thomas Cooper is living next door to Valentine Mowery on the 1820 Franklin Co. IN. census. No children listed on this census. Thomas is listed age 26-45 and wife listed age 16-26. A James Cooper who is much older, is living next door on the other side of Thomas Cooper. It is possible they are related.
