Descendants of George Mourer

Generation No. 1

      1. George2 Mourer (Jurg1 Maurer) was born Abt. 1750 in Shenandoah Co. Va., and died Aft. 1810 in Pendleton Co. WV.. He married Catherine Sausele June 25, 1772 in Frederick Co. MD., daughter of Michael Sausele.

Notes for George Mourer:
George's surname is sometimes spelled; Mowrow, Maurer, Mowrah, Mowra, Mowery on early deeds & census. His descendants today use the spelling: Mowery, Mowry.
Macie Mowery Van Slyke is the compiler of this line of Mowerys that settled in West Virginia. She has devoted many hours to this research and is the most knowledgeable person on the Pendleton Co., WV. Mowerys living today. Many thanks for her help.
George Mourer is the 2nd. son of Jurg Maurer. George's marriage is listed in Evangelical Lutheran Church Records, Frederick Co. MD. No marriage licence was issued and George and Catherine was married through a process called; "The Proclamation of the Banns". This process in lieu of a license from a legal authority, called for the couple that intended to marry, to stand up in church in front of the congregation and announce their intention to marry 3 times. They were married by Johann Andreas Krug a pastor at that time in the city of, Frederick MD. The marriage record is listed after translation from German as: June 23 1772 Georg Maurer, Georg Maurer's second legitimate single son & Catharina Sauselin, legitimate single daughter of Michael Sausele on the "Canawolle" in Maryland, both in Dunmore County (now Shenandoah, Co. ) in Virginia. Proclamation made, June 22, 23 & 24. (This must have been during a revival with the consecutive days). It is noted his neighbor in Virginia, Johannes Lantz, Georg Lantz's first legitimate son marries Clara Fuchsin dau. of the late Adam Fuch on, June 23 1772 and they were from Dunmore CO. VA. (now Shenandoah Co. ) George Maurer & John Lantz were in Frederick Md. togeather.
In Shenandoah Co., Va. Court Records May 1778 George Mourer, Henry Lance and George Adam Lance was found guilty of assaulting and attempting to burn the house & fences of Jno. North and were to remain in jail until they paid their fines. Jno. North was the county tax collector and evidently they developed a great dislike for him. George Mourer's fine was 60 pounds, and his fine being the greatest amount indicates he was the ringleader. When comparing money value for this time frame, we find that George's brother John Mourer bought 100 acres of land in 1790 for 45 pounds. Quite a hefty fine.
George Mowra is listed in Augusta Co. Va. records (later became Highland & Pendleton Counties area today) purchasing 63 acres, in the South Branch area of the Potomac River, on 17 April 1789, Book 1 Page 232 (See Sims Index - See copy of deed).
It appears that George Mourer's brother-in-law "Anthony Knisely" who married Barbara Mourer ( see section 7 this book ) removed to Pendleton Co. Wv. about the 1789 time frame.
Georges's sons Leonard & George Jr. bought land later on in the South Fork area of Pendleton Co, Wv. ( See copies of deeds) . George is listed along with his sons, George Jr. & Henry Mowrey in the muster rolls of Highland Co. Va. 1794. George is listed on the 1810 Pendleton Co. WV. census as George Mowraw and he is not listed on the 1820 census. It appears he died sometime after the 1810 census.
The Mowerys were noted for their musical talents and played for all sorts of events when called upon. They were also noted for their marksmanship and knowledge of firearms.

  Notes for Henry Mowry:
Henry is listed in Morton's History of Pendleton Co. WV. as a son of George Mowrey. The book states; "Henry Mowery, married Catherine Sheets 1794". That is all that is posted in said book on Henry & Catherine.
Henry is listed with his father George Mowry Sr. & brother George Jr. on the muster rolls of Highland Co., VA. in 1794. Henry is listed paying personal property taxes in Pendleton Co. VA. (now WV.) in 1806.
Henry is listed on the Bath Co. VA. 1810 census with 2 young males & 3 young females. Nothing more has been found to date on Henry Mowry after this 1810 census. It is assumed he died sometime between 1810 & 1820.

THIS AUTHOR'S RESEARCH DATA
Below is a chronological order of data on the research of, JOHN MOWERY in, Gallia Co., OH. - Marion Co., IN. - Greene Co., IN. - Daviess Co., IN. & Martin Co., IN. and this MOWERY family association with the SHEETS family from Virginia.
From the following data is the basis for the thought that JOHN MOWERY was the son of HENRY & CATHERINE SHEETS MOWERY.
A Leonard Sheets, age 45. is found on the 1820 Gallia Co., OH. census with 8 children under age 16. he may be the father of Barbara Ann Sheets Mowery. If that be true then John Mowery and Barbara Ann Sheets were first cousins. Also Leonard Sheets may be George Sheets's father that married Roxelina Mowery. George Sheets and Barbara Ann Sheets who married John Mowery, may have been siblings. More research is needed on parentage of Barbara Ann & George Sheets.
Roxelana Mowery, married a George Sheets in Ross Co., OH. on 25 Oct. 1828. Nothing more has been found to date on Roxelina. Roxelina may have died soon after marriage and the George Sheets that married Anna Henry, on 31 Aug 1830 in Gallia Co., OH. may have been the same George Sheets. From the census records, George & Anna Henry Sheets appears to have lived all their life in Gallia Co., OH. A IMPORTANT NOTE; George & Ann Sheets are listed as born in "W. Virginia" on the 1870 census.
The following persons are found on the 1830 Gallia Co., OH. census. Leonard Sheets, born,1780-1790. George Mowry, born 1800-1810, with wife & 3 children under age 5. His brother, John Mowry, born 1800-1810 with wife & no children living next door to George Mowry on same census..
On the 1840 census, Leonard Sheets, born 1780-1790 is found in Greene, Co., IN. Katherine (Catherine) Mowery, born about 1780-1790, head of household, widow of Henry Mowery and mother of John Mowery, is found living next door to Leonard Sheets on same census. This author feels the said Leonard and Katherine Sheets may be siblings or related in some manor. John Mowery is found on the 1840 Marion Co., IN. census. From the children's birth on the 1850 census, John Mowery went to Indiana about 1832. His brother, George Mowry has not found to date on the 1840 census.
On the 1850 census, Leonard Sheets, age 68, born 1782, in VA., is found in, Greene Co., IN. Taylor Twp. living among other Sheets families who are assumed to be related. A Katherine Mowry, age 44 ? born in VA. is living next door to Leonard Sheets in the household of John Sheets. This author feels this age posted for Katherine Mowry is incorrect and she is the widow of Henry Mowry or a unmarried sibling of John Mowery. . George Mowry, age 38 born abt. 1812, in VA. is found on the 1850 Greene Co., IN. Washington Twp. census. George Mowry has not been found to date after this 1850 census.
John Mowrey, age 50 born about 1800, in VA. is found on the 1850 Daviess Co., IN. Madison Twp. census with the following persons.
BARBARA , age 45 born abt. 1805, in VA. - Wife, Barbara Ann Sheets.
ROXALINA, age 19, born abt. 1831, in OH. - She was most likely named after John Mowery's sister Roxalina Mowery who married George Sheets in Ross Co., OH. THIS IS A VERY SIGNIFICANT CLUE AS THE NAME ROXALINA IS VERY, VERY RARELY USED.
LEONARD, age 17, born abt. 1833, in IN. - He was most likely named after Leonard Sheets who may have been his grandfather. This is another important clue.
JOHN, age 16, born abt. 1834, in IN. - Named after his father
MARY, age 15, born abt. 1835, in IN.
GEORGE W., age 14, born abt. 1836 in IN.
BARBARA, age 9, born abt. 1841 in IN. - Most likely named after her mother.
WILLIAM, age 6, born abt. 1844, in IN.
HENRY, age 3, born abt. 1847, in IN. - Most likely named after his grandfather, Henry Mowry. Note; research has found where a family named a child with a given name and died very young, the given name was used again.
JONATHAN, age 2, born abt. 1848, in IN. - He is not listed on the 1860 census. May have died young.
On the 1860 census John Mowry, age 58 born abt. 1802, in VA. and family are found in Martin Co., IN. and on the 1870 Martin Co., IN. census John Mowery is listed age 65 born abt. 1805, in Ohio. This is incorrect. Should have been Virginia.
John Mowery's son Leonard Mowery is found on the 1870 & 1880 Greene Co., IN. census with wife, Hiley and family.
Leonard and family are found on the 1900 & 1910 Martin Co., IN census.
The above research data has this author convinced, the John Mowery who married Barbara Ann Sheets in Gallia Co., OH on 25 Sept. 1828 was a child of Henry & Catherine Sheets Mowry of Pendleton Co., WV. Research will go on to further document the connection.

  Notes for Catharine Sheets:
Catherine is listed in Morton's History of Pendleton Co. WV. as a daughter of George Sheets. Mother unknown. A brother George Sheets, is listed married to, Catherine Gragg (Grogg), in 1812 in Morton's "History of Pendleton Co., WV." Katherine (Catherine) Mowry is found on the 1840 & 1850 Greene Co., IN. census.
