Notes for ALFRED WILLIAM VIOHKOLA: The Daily Mining Gazette Alfred Viohkola Laurium-Alfred W. Viohkola, 70, a resident of Osceola St., died of an apparent attak at his home. He was born Aug 3, 1908 in Albion location, Calumet, a son of Lauri and Judith Viohkola. He resided there untill he was nine years old when the family moved to the Lake Linden-Gay Road area. He attended the area schools. Mr. Viohkola made his home in the Gay and LAke Linden area, for two years in Tamarack Mills and then moved to Laurium in 1955. He was employed as a farmer, by Calumet and Hecla in the mines and smelter and also as a woodsman. He married Jeanette Jacobson Schmitt in 1951. She died in 1967. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Alma Gabriau of Lake Orion, Michigan, Mrs John (Elenore) Leppi of Lake Linden and Mrs. Donald (Mamie) Kahkonen of Hazel Parl; four step-sons Johns Schmitt Jr. of Calumet, Bernard and Joseph of Hubbell and Melvin of Tamarack City; four step-daughters, Mrs. Edwin (Jeanette) Wetelainen of Laurium, Mrs. Russell (Merle) Provost of Lake Linden, Mrs. Martin (Audrey) Quello of Calumet and Mrs. Robert (Joyce) Kisul of Hubbell and numerous nieces and nephews. (Ernie) Niemela died March 6 in a Longview nursing home, where he had been a patient since suffering a stroke recently. He was 72 years of age. Born in Mayger on June 25, 1916 to John and Emma Niemela, he started commercial fishing on the Columbia River at the age of 12 and continued fishing throughout his life until his retirement. He attended the Mayger elementary school and graduated from Clatskanie High School in 1934. He was married to his surviving wife, Mabel Viuhkola, on July 17, 1941 in Bremerton, Wash. Mr. Niemela was a member of the Columbia River Fishermans Protective Union and was a retired lieutenant fireman with the Clatskanie Volunteer Fire Department. He is survived by his wife Mabel at home in Mayger; two sons James R. Niemela of Homer, Alaska and Kenneth E. Niemela of Clatskanie, a nephew Gary Viuhkola of Clatskanie; a brother, Jess Niemela, Hays, Kansas; two sisters, Ann Blair, Milwaukie, and Ida DeRock, Seaside, a grandson, Chad Niemela, Clatskanie, and a grandaughter, Kara Niemela, Clatskanie. Funeral services were set for Thursday at 11:00 a. m. at the Haakinson-Groulx Mortuary chapel in Clatskanie with the Rev. Richard Rash of the Clatskanie United Methodist Church officating. Interment was to follow in the Hudson Cemetery near Rainier. The family has requested the memorial donations be made to the Clatskanie Volunteer Fire Dept, P.O. Box 807, Clatskanie.
