Notes for P
ETER MOYERS:
Peter served in the Continental Army throughout the war for Independence, enlisting at Hidelberg, Pennsylvania on May 24, 1777. He was assigned to the all German regiment known as the "Flying
Camp". While living in Virginia, it is said that Peter, in about 1805, at the age of 84, felled a large oak tree and split it into 100 rails in order to reach home by 1 o'clock to see a game fight . It is related that old Peter was a man of "powerful physique". Peter Moyers moved to Lincoln County, Tennessee at approximately 93 years of age to live near his son, Peter Jr. He died there at the age of 101.

Proof that Peter is the father of Henry has not been located. Other Lincoln County Moyers families contend that Peter had sons named Peter Jr., Samuel, George, Jacob and Henry. At the time of the 1820 census of Lincoln County there were four Moyers households listed, Peter Sr., Peter Jr., George and Henry. One family separated Peter Sr.'s and Henry's houses. In a letter in the 1890s Peter William Moyers, son of Henry, referred to "Uncle Jacob" having been to California, then Canehill, Arkansas, where he reared a family. He returned to Fayetteville in the 1880s and stayed with "cousin" William who most likely was William T. Moyers, a son of Samuel. He then went to "William Bates" where he died. This is obviously a reference to William C. Bates who married Margaret E. Moyers, daughter of Samuel and niece of Jacob.

He served in Long Island, New York and he later states: "After remaining a short time at Kings Bridge we were ordered to march to the White Plains where we joined the main army under General Washington." He also states: "After the Revolutionary War I lived in Berks County, Pennsylvania, about five years, then moved to Maryland and lived there about six years, then moved to Winchester, Virginia, lived there twenty-two or twenty-three years and in other places in Virginia about three years, then moved to this county where I now live.
