Notes for J
AMES MOZLEY:
Below is a note from Mona Lynn Herin's work on the Mozley family tree.

This is not proven. This comes from a notarized letter from Norman Adolphus Mozley , a lawyer, who decended from Edward Mozley , the son of James Mozley who migrated from England. This letter was written in 1893. I received a copy from my cousin Rusty Mozley who received a copy from Raymond Mozley. Rusty and Raymond have done an enormous amt. of research and documentation. Raymond is now deceased.

One of the problems with verification and such is that all these people named their children the same names and the would be half a dozen James, Williams, etc. all in the same area at the same time and all within a year or two of each other in age. Plus the spelling of Mozley is a toss up. I'm not sure what the original spelling was. Some in the family believe that Mozley is the correct and original spelling. Uncle Howard seemed to think that the "Z" had a special meaning. I don't fully understand that. He mentioned this to Ruth Blair, Georgia State Historian at one time and his cousin on the Mozley side, in a letter dated in 1958. He quoted a saying, " They carried me, and didn't let me fall; They fed me, and didn't poison me; they taught me, and didn't corrupt me; I learned their dialect, and I learned their fidelity. " He said this in reference to a black woman named Mary Mozley Zachary who was present at his birth and helped to care for him as his mother had another son just eighteen months younger than he. Mary Mozley Zachary said that her parents were slaves of Mr. Mozley. Uncle Howard said that he didn't know of any Mozley that had owned a slave, but we have found in the censuses that some of them did, Isaiah Irvin, father of James Samuel, father of Zolpha, father of James Howard (Uncle Howard) and Lowell Isaiah, my grandfather, did own some slaves although he was very against the secession from the union. He was called various unsavory names by his neighbors and even family. Apparently he was against slavery. It must have been horrible being pulled between two cultures as he was.
