This is the history of our families as I have it. Most of it, for the last four generations, is well documented. I will try to keep it updated as I receive new information.
We were finally able to break through a brick wall that we had on my husband's Smith/Mueller line last year, but it has left us with many more questions than answers.
A couple of months before my husband's father passed away in 1976, his parents told us that they had changed their name from Smith to Mueller. They gave us a lot of half-truths that we could not verify. When his mother passed away in 1992, we thought that we might be able to find some paper work. There was none: no immigration papers for his mother, no birth certificates, no divorce papers, no marriage license, no legal paperwork for the name change. Nothing! There were just a few pictures with names that didn't mean anything to us. When we finally found the right family on the 1900 census, some of the names started making sense. His parents had told us that his dad had been married before, but nothing about any other family. Imagine our surprise when we found that there was an older brother and at least two older sisters that we knew nothing about. There is no question that this is the right family both from names on pictures and handwriting on WWI draft registration. From all appearances, my husband's older siblings are long gone.
We would love to hear from anyone who might be related to Eugene Vincent Smith, b. 1898 Irvington, NJ (1900 census says NY). He lived in Brooklyn, NY until sometime after the 1930 census.
