In the name of God Amen. April 15th, 1799. I Robert TAYLOR of Sumner County being sick and weak of body but of sound and perfect mind and memory and calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this Testament to contain my last will and Testament in a manner and form following that is to say, principally and first of all, I give and recommand my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it to me and my body to the earth to be buried in a Christian like and decent manner at the discretion of my executor hereafter named.and and _ such worldly estate as it has been pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give, devise, and dispose of the same in manner following to wit.

I leave to my beloved wife Ann the place and the my plantation whereon I now live including the upper part of this tract of land. beginning in the middle of the south line running north of the bank, then up the creek as the creek runs - also all my household furniture and all my money that I have on hand - also my stock cattle and horses during her widowhood.
Item:
My desire is that my son Henning/Henry TAYLOR have all my land lying on the north side of the upper _ include _ _ ,au _ where Jesse KEEN now lives.

My desire is that my sons Robert and Manoah have my lower tract of land to be divided equally as the two may think most convenient.

My desire is that my son Benjamin, have the lower part of the south side of the creek of this tract I now live on Beginning in the middle of the south line as is mentioned in my wife's part to a north line to the creek and then up the creek as it runs.

My desire is that my son John have the land I live on excepting my wife's part. Beginning on the south line as is mentioned in Benjamin's part and runs north course to the Creek, thence up the Creek as it runs - My desire is that my son John have privilige to improve what part of the land he may see cause to as not to interrupt his mother in her _ , that is I mean that he may improve convenient to either of the springs lying above.

My desire is that my Daughter Lucy JOINER have five dollars.

My desire is that my Daughter Keziah KEEN have one hundred acres of land including where she now lives. Beginning on the lower corner on the creek, running up the creek as far as will take in one hundred acres running across the land.

My desire is that my Daughters Elizabeth, Nancy, and Polly have all my property that I have not mentioned. Also all my wife's property after her death except the lower tract I give to my son John, to be equally divided between them as is mentioned above to each of my children and to their heirs forever. And lastly I constitute nominate and appoint my loving wife Executor and my son Robert TAYLOR executors of this my last will and Testament and voiding and revoking and making all other wills and Testaments by me made. ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament. In the name of God Amen:
I Thomas COTTON of Sumner County and territory south of the Ohio being in perfect mind and memory thanks be to God; I do make this my last will and testament _ such worldly estate where it hath pleased God to bless me in this life I give and devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form.
First
I give and bequeath to Priscilla my dearly beloved wife the use of my estate in the following manner - viz. The plantation where I now live and my negroes and all my stock of all kinds, likewise my household furniture with all my iron tools and any other things about the house or belonging to the plantation to her and her use for the support of my children until her death except she should die before the youngest son comes to twenty one years of age and if the said Priscilla my wife should died before Sanders COTTON my youngest son shall come to the age of twenty one years then the above mentioned estate to fall into the hands of Moore COTTON my eldest son for him to make use of in the same manner before mentioned until the said Sanders COTTON comes to twenty years of age then or age my wife's death. I give and bequeath to my two daughters Letha COTTON and Sarah COTTON each of them the sum of one hundred and thirty three dollars and a third in some kind of property that is most convenient to pay at that time. I give and bequeath to my son Moore COTTON the half of my land where I now live, it being the upper part of the tract to him the said Moore COTTON and his heirs forever. I likewise give and bequeath to my son Sanders COTTON the lower part of the same tract of land I now live one to him the said Sanders COTTON and his heirs forever. I give and bequeath to my two sons Allen COTTON and Noah COTTON six hundred and forty acres of land laying on the waters of little Harper by the name of Reeds S? be equally divided when Allen COTTON comes of age to them the said Allen COTTON and Noah COTTON to them and their heirs forever. I give and bequeath to my sons John COTTON and Arthur COTTON the tracts of land joining John _ plantation running east down a Branch with Stone's River to them and their heirs forever. I give and bequeath to my nine children Mary CRYER, Moore COTTON, Letha COTTON, John COTTON, Allen COTTON, Sarah COTTON, Arthur COTTON, Noah COTTON, and Sanders COTTON, all my negroes and all my stock of all kind and all my household furniture and perishable property of every kind to be equally divided among my nine children before mentioned, at the death of my wife Priscilla, without the said Priscilla COTTON should decease before Sanders COTTON shall come to the age of twenty years, then and in that case for the aforesaid Estate to be equally divided when the aforesaid Sanders COTTON shall come to the age twenty years to then the said Mary CRYER, Moore COTTON, Letha COTTON, John COTTON, Allen COTTON, Sarah COTTON, Arthur COTTON, Noah COTTON and Sanders COTTON to them and their heirs forever.
And lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint Moore COTTON, George PERRY and Isaac WALTON, my whole and sole Executors of this my last will and testament said I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke and disannul all other former wills before by me made and this only take to be my last will and testament. The Robert Hobdys, together with the Thomas Cottons came by wagons to Sumner County, Tennessee, from Halifax, North Carolina in 1795 or 1796. The Hobdys settled on acreage and established the Hobdy plantation, near the Kentucky line, in the present 13th district of Sumner County. The first tract of land, that is recorded as purchased by Robert Hobdy, was "86 acres on Drake' s Creek, purchased from John Payton, 15th of January, 1796, for $50."
Robert Hobdy was a carriage maker by trade. His wife's maiden name was Talitha Cotton. She was the older sister of Capt. Thomas Cotton, a Revolutionary soldier, who in 1795 first settled on a land grant and founded Cottontown, Tennessee. They were cousins, once removed, from John Cotton, who came with John Donelson and helped found Nashville, Tennessee.
Thomas Cotton was born November 4, 1748, in North Carolina, died June 5, 1795, at Cottontown, Sumner County, Tennessee. He married about 1769, in North Carolina, Priscilla Knight, who was born in Halifax County, North Carolina, December 7, 1748, and died at Cottontown, Tennessee, November 1, 1843.
Thomas Cotton is said to have been a Captain of Hertford County Militia during the Revolution.
The children of Thomas and Priscilla Cotton were: Moore; Mary (Polly), born 1770, married (1)....Cryer (2).....Foxall; Arthur, married Sally Daniel; John, born 1790; Allen, born March 12, 1781, married Polly Parham; Sarah, married Strother; Alexander, died fairly early; Noah, born 1785; Elizabeth (Betsy), died at seven (7); and Talitha, born 1778, married John Orr.
