Notes for Nathaniel Gerard:
Nathaniel GERARD
Sex: M
Birth: 1752 in Frederick Co., Virginia 1 2 1 2
Death: ABT 23 Mar 1832 in Staunton Twp, Miami Co., Ohio 3 4 3 4
Religion: Baptist
Occupation: Farmer
Note:
Nathaniel served in the Revolutionary War by enlisting at Pittsburgh, PA
in 1775 and served for 6 months in Capt Neville's Co. In 1777 he served in
Capt. Andrew Waggoner's Co. and Col James Wood's 12th VA Reg in the battles
of Brandywine and Germantown. On Dec. 26, 1777 he re-enlisted at Valley Forge
and was taken prisoner at Tappan, NJ in 1778 and held in NY until exchanged.
He joined his regiment under Col. Wm. Washington and was discharged Dec. 26,
1780 in South Carolina.
Nathaniel took land warrants in 1774 in Bedford Co. which became
Huntingdon Co. in 1787. Deed Book D1, p.547, dated 4 Mar 1780, recorded 14
May 1795, shows that Nathaniel bought 100 acres. The tax list of 1784 for
Bedford Co. PA lists him as a Tanner with 100 acres, 1 house and 6 whites.
The PA Archives also show that Nathaniel served in both the Huntingdon and
Bedford Counties Militia for which he received depreciation pay. The 1790
Census lists Nathaniel Jarat, one male over 16, four males under 16, and two
females.
Tax lists show the family was living in Sycamore Twp. of Hamilton Co.,
Ohio Territory in 1796-1797. In 1799 they were at Staunton, known as the
"Dutch Station," in Miami Co. Ohio. In Dec 1805 he entered two tracts of
land, 123 acres and 275 acres.
On 3 Nov 1804 Nathaniel and Mary were two of the seven believers who met
to constitute the Staunton Baptist Church. Nathaniel served as a Grand Juror
for the January term of 1810. He also was one of the managers of a lottery to
raise money to build a bridge across the Miami River where Troy is located
today.
Nathaniel and his family are found in Staunton Twp. Miami Co. Ohio in
the 1820 census; both he and his wife above 45 years, one son under 26, one
son under 18 and one son under 16. In the 1830 Census he and Mary are between
70 and 80 years of age. The last deed signed by them was dated 23 Mar 1832,
DB 9, p.178. No record of either death or stone has been found.
The names of all their children are not known. Their child Henry was
shown as a son of Abner in the work of Lindsay M. Brien but court records
prove that Abner's Henry was a minor in 1822 and could not possibly be this
Henry.
