Harmen is the assumed founder of the New York-New Rochelle Schureman's. He is found on Manhattan Island in 1649 in the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam. In accordance with prevailing Dutch usage, his offspring for a generation or two are given the patrionic "Harmenszen"(Harmens son).
