Notes for Donald Mackenzie: Bookseller The following was copied from a notebook belonging to Alt a Macdonald of Brownsburg Quebec Canada Copied from Nairnshire Telegraph, Wed. March 1st 1876 Death of Mr. D. Mackenzie, Bookseller. We record today the death of an old and respected citizen , Mr. Donald Mackenzie, bookseller, who for forty years, ca rried on business in Nairn.Mr. Mackenzie was a man of a v ery retiring disposition, and took very little part in publ ic affairs, but from his long standing in business, he wa s well known through out the district.He devoted himsel f almost exclusively to his own business, and distinguishe d himself by his methodical habits, his punctuality and gre at integrity.A few years ago, on finding his health fai ling, he retired from business, but he did not long enjoy t he rest, which he had well earned by a life of laborious wo rk, for he suffered severely from paralysis, and died on Th ursday last.In addition to the public bequests noted belo w, he has left a large number of legacies to friends and re latives. Handsome bequest to Nairn - we understand the late Mr. Dona ld Mackenzie, bookseller, has made the following bequest s - to the District of Nairn Hospital for the purpose of bu ilding a fever ward £200, to the minister of Nairn for th e purpose of buying books for the Sabbath school library o f the Parish Church of Nairn £25, to the minister of Nair n and Croy and the head-master of Rose's Academical Institu tion £500 to be held by them in trust for founding a bursar y, to be called the "Mackenzie Bursary", to assist young me n to attend the college, the bursary to be gained by compet ition, open only to pupils who shall have attended classe s at Rose's Academical Institution for at least two years p rior to the competition, and to the directors of Rose's Aca demical Institution his house and ground in Waverly Road, f or the purpose of applying the rent so as to aid the headma ster in employing suitable accountant.Mr. Mackenzie's set tlement provides that in the event of the Academy being a t anytime divested from its present organization and purpos e or ofits being transferred to or falling under the mana gement of the School Board, or any other body, public or pr ivate, the conveyance to be granted to the Academy Trustee s shall become null and the property revert to Mr. Mackenzi e's heir in laws. Donald Mackenzie was the brother of Mary Mackenzie who marr ied William Bain in 1807.In his will he left money to eac h of her six children. |

Notes for John Calder: Weaver Church of Scotland My Aunt Helen (Murdoch) McKyes told me about a book "In a C anadian Attic" by Gerald Stevens - Ryerson Press Toronto 19 63.On page 95 was a documented list of Canadian Weavers i n the mid 1800s.On it was John Calder of Dalesville. Aunt Helen lived in Lachute from 1950-1953 and got to kno w George Calder quite well.He was the grandson of John Ca lder's brother James Calder. When she asked him about his g reat uncle John he related the following: "John and James Calder came from Nairn in Morayshire Scotla nd.At the end of the 1700s times were hard in Scotland an d they travelled to Paisley to learn a trade.When they go t there, they found everyone speaking English, so they lear ned weaving and English.When they eventually came to Cana da in 1827 and subsequently moved to Dalesville they foun d everyone speaking Gaelic.So he did his weaving and brot her James taught English. The following is a description of his farm as described i n a census taken in 1842: Total acres = 200Acres improved =5 Annual Production:40 bushels of potatoes / 10 pounds of M aple Sugar / 1cow for meat Manufactured goods: 10 yards of fulled cloth / 10 yards o f cotton linen / 14 pounds of woolprocured |
