Descendants of Josiah House

Generation No. 1

1. Josiah7 House (Jeremiah6, Lazarus5, William4, William3, William2, John1) was born January 09, 1814 in Hebron, Tolland County, Connecticut (assumed), and died January 04, 1905 in Red Hook, New York at Rokeby Estate, buried at Ascension Church Cemetery, Esopus. He married Julia Haines 1834 in Red Hook, New York (assumed).

Notes for Josiah House:

At some point in the history of our House family, a photograph of Josiah House and who we now know as his wife Julia (Haines) House was most likely sent to one of his realitives. The photo, probably taken around 1890, shows an aged couple sitting in front of a stone wall that was built by Josiah between 1880-1888 on the Astor - Chanler estate in Red Hook (Barrytown), New York.

Nothing is known about the ancestory of Josiah. But I have at this point made some logical (though unproven) assumptions. The first record of Josiah is in the 1840 Ulster County census of New York. It shows him as married, and living in Esopus, New York. It also shows that he was born in Connecticut, the birth state of my House ancestors. Since this photograph was somehow passed down through my family, I think it is a "safe" assumption that Josiah was somehow related to one of my ancestors. The 1880 Ulster County census also shows that both his parents were born in Connecticut.

This assumption lead to my researching the census records of Hartford County, Glastonbury,

Connecticut in the time period shortly after Josiahs birth in 1814. In the 1820 census, I discovered a missing (and previosly unknown) male child in the family of Jeremiah and Ruth (Purple) House. This male child fits the age for Josiah, however there is no record of birth or baptism that links his name with that family.

Now, back to the photo, and how did it end up in my family? Let's assume that Josiah, as the youngest brother of both my ancestors, Benajah and Jeremiah II, sent one of his brothers out in Iowa this photo. That would explain how it ended up with our House family as Josiah is probably a member of that it.

However, once again as in the case of George F. House, we need that proof. Though I am willing to place Josiah within our family (and in doing this much I already have), a good genealogist requires that definitive proof. So, back to the 1820 Connecticut census - looking for all House families that have a male child of sixteen or less. Somewhere within that group must be Josiah since he was born in 1814. Found were sixteen House families that fit the search criteria with three males or less of that age group. By researching all the known genealogies of those families, I found names that matched the numbers for all familes except the family of Jeremiah and Ruth (Purple) House. By process of elimination, all points back to this family as the parents of Josiah.

Though it would be more genealogicaly accurate to substantiate this claim with a proof, I have yet to find one that exists. Birth records for the time of Josiahs' birth don't exist, the same for marriage records. I have his record of death - also no parents. Baptism records also can't be found - most likely if Josiah were baptised, it would have been at Eastbury Church in Glastonbury.

Josiah spent most of his life in the employ of the Astor - Chanler family in Red Hook, New York. He was their caretaker, and was very well liked and respected by both families. He lived on the estate with Julia until his death, and also owned property bought from the Pell family in Esopus, New York.

Sometime near his 75th year, he contracted with the Astors and Chanlers to erect a stone wall

on their estate. Between 1880 - 88, he quarried and hand cut each stone that was to comprise a 3000-ft.

long stone wall. This wall still stands at Rokeby, the Astor Chanler Estate, in Red Hook, New York.

On a stone inscribed by Josiah it is written:

Hunc Murum

Josiah House

Ex Fundamentis Erexit

Quem Sibi Monumentum Posuit.

Translated:

Just as it stands, with his own his own hands,

He quarried and he cut 'em.

When he is gone may every stone

Stay where Josiah put 'em.

The inscription given above was composed by Winthrop Astor Chanler in 1888, three years

after his graduation from Harvard College where he studied the Latin language, and was chiseled into a slab of bluestone by Josiah House himself, which surmounts his great ornamental wall immediately south of the southerly pillar at the front entrance to Rokeby. During the last 25 years of his life, Josiah House and his wife Julia occupied the adjoining gatehouse.

In part because of this wall, River Road has been designated a Scenic Road by the State of New York and an historic tourway by Dutchess County. The Federal Government has declared the wall to be a contributing feature to the Hudson River Historic Landmark District, established by the Secretary of the Interior in 1990.

Before his death in September of 2002, I spoke to Ralph in Arizona about Josiah House. This contact with Ralph is what prompted my search for Josiahs' parents. I am sorry that he isn't here to find out - though I imagine where he is now, he beat me to the punch.

This is for you Ralph, and our wonderful House family -
