From The Lower Rim of the Wicklow Mountains, Ireland
The history of the Murphy through Celtic and medival history were thought to descend from Murchadh, grandfather of Dermot McMurrough, King of Leinster. Today, Murphys are more numerous than ever in their counties of origin with large migrations into neighboring counties. From Wexford, they spread into Kilkenny, Carlow and Wicklow.(Murphy surname history by Francis Dowling.Website: http://www.local.ie/content/27780.shtml) Our great-grandfather, William Murphy, whose parents were James and Bridget (Quinn) Murphy, emigrated to New York from Craffield, County Wicklow in 1864.Craffield is located in a rural area, northeast of Aughrim. The Ireland family information was researched and provided by the County Wicklow Courthouse Heritage Project. In New York, William worked as a porter, and lived in the lower eastside of Manhattan. He met and married Mary Gannon, who came to New York from Dublin in 1859.Her father was a Chief of Detectives in Dublin. William and Mary moved on to Stewartsville, Missouri, where he obtained work with the Old Hanniball-St. Joseph Railroad as a section foreman. They had two children, James, b. 1870, and Margaret Isabel, b. 1871.Their movements centered in various townships around the northwestern part of Missouri for many years. William died in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1920 at the age of 77.Mary died in 1914 at the age of 75. William's son James, met and married Ada Fickle in 1893, and between them, they had 7 children, Gerald, William, Kate, Allen, Pat, Joseph, and Lawrence.Lawrence was my father. When James and Ada separated around 1923, Ada was unable to care for Lawrence and placed him in a Catholic orphanage in St. Joseph. My father "rode the rails" to Washington State during 1930, joining two of his brothers, Allen and Pat.He joined the army and was stationed at Ft. Vancouver, Washington.During his seventh year, he met and married my mother, Erma Rose in 1938.They had three children, Michael, Margaret, and Laura while living in South Bend, Washington.Lawrence worked as a bushler in the logging industry for most of his working years, until he passed away in 1976 from cancer. Thanks to a letter written to him in 1945 by his father James, the history and origin of the Murphy family was identified.Over a period of seven years, a family tree with the names Murphy, Fickel, Rose and Petersons and their extended family was researched and written about. I hope you enjoy it! | From The Lower Rim of the Wicklow Mountains, Ireland Updated February 20, 2003 |
