2001 Updates
Murphy: I hired a professional genealogist (Karen Olszeski) and we have made some good progress. It appears that William Murphy died, when William Columbus (my granddad) was about 4 years old. Nellie, wife of William Murphy, remarried to a man named Henry Giles. They had two kids together. William Columbus was living with them in the 1880 Illinois census. As of this date we are searching for any information on William, as to where he died and where he is buried.
Roper Reunion, Martinsburg WV, August 9, 2001. Email me to get information.
Davis, Calvin Clark, a WW2 radio gunner, flew on the Asterisk, B-17, died on November 30, 1944 during the bombing of Mersesburg Germany. Calvin wanted to be a pilot, but knew his race would not allow him. He passed for white and became a radio gunner. According to war reports Calvin was eligble for the Medal of Honor and the Silver Star. Currently, my brother and I are seeking assistance from anyone, from Tom Brokraw to Oprah to help find out if he is due the medal.
New cousin found, Joyce K of Frankfort. She recently confirmed that she is the daughter of Emory Davis, we welcome her to the family. I had the opportunity to meet Joyce in Mi this summer at a mini reunion.
Worden, Lydorianna (Boyer), yes it is confirmed, Lydorianna did re-marry. My mom and I visited Oceana Courthouse and found the marriage record. She was 65 and John Schaffer was 72. We are still searching for information on where she is buried, and where is Parley Worden the first husband?
2000 Updates, More to come!
GOENS/GOEN/GOINS/GOWEN/GOINGS: I went to Charles Town, Jefferson Co. WVa in April 2000 and met my gg-grandmother, Mary Catherine (Goens) Marsh, brother Charles Henry Goens's grandson, George Howell, his wife Blanche and daughter Wanda Pingatore. I took a cassette recorder (three 90 MIN. cassettes) and recorded everyword he said about the Goens family that George knew. We visited the Kabletown and all the known places he knew about the Goens family. Wanda will be attending the August 5, Roper and I will be attending the August 19th. George told about his grandpap playing the fiddle, as a young boy (which is handed down to him) during the war. The union soldiers would give grandpap whiskey for playing. Grandpap Goens mother didn't like the soldiers giving her young son whiskey for playing, and she went over and told them to stop. Charles Henry Goens was married to Lousia Victoria Roper. What is interesting is that three of gg-grandmother's siblings married into the Roper family.
I have received information from another Goens researcher that the Goens are believed to have Native American blood in them, Wapi. This will be interesting, at this point I don't know if I am looking for white, black/mulatto or native american with this family, and the GOENS are a common name among the MELUNGOENS!!! I have joined the Gowen Foundation, hoping for some leads.
Essie Goens in Bolivar Wva, passed away this year and so did her sister in law, Victoria (Davis) Goens of Harper Ferry, Wva. I had made contact with Essie and the only surviving great neice. Essie's mind was gone, so I never was able to get any information about the family. STILL LOOKING FOR GOENS, JOHNSON, FOX AND HART'S. 2000 Charlestown, WV.
DAVIS NEWS: I have several queries out on William Davis, the scotch/irish man. I get conflicting information from the city of Philadephia. I am trying to figure out if my gg-grandfather William Davis born 1817 in PA, was the son or grandson of the plantation owner William Davis. My only hope is to track the land records and find where the property might of went back for back taxes or something, due the his death. LOOKING FOR MARRIAGE INFORMATION FOR WILIAM DAVIS AND MILDRED BRAND.
WORDEN NEWS: Parley Worden continues to be a mystery. Just know that he was born in New York 1799, don't know where, but married Lydorianna Boyer from Manheim, Herkimer Co. NY. He died in Oceana County Mich, 1862 which I can't find any death record or clue to where he is buried. LOOKING FOR INFORMATION ON PARLEY WORDEN. LYDORIANNA, WHO WAS 44 WHEN HUSBAND PARLEY DIED, SUPPOSELY REMARRIED TO JOHN SCHAFER OF SHELBY, MICH. Join the Worden Association for any and all Worden News.
MARSH NEWS: I have collected information on the Muse Family of Jefferson County. Batille Muse had 24 slaves, one of larger holders of slaves and the plantation was called the Marsh Farm. It is the only thing in the area that has the Marsh name to it. I am wondering if this is the plantation that my family was on. Duke University has the Muse Family documents, over 6,000. I do have the index of the papers, and mulling through to see if I can find the slaves names. It is a long shot. But it is all I got at this time. Note: July 2000-found the Manitou relatives!! Living in Michigan and OK.
MURPHY NEWS: I haven't had any luck on this side of the family. My grandfather William Murphy born in Canton Illinois, says he was raised in Des Moines. Well, I can't find a clue of any Murphy's there. I am hoping to receive a list of all the WWI soldiers with the name Murphy who were killed. My grandfather had a brother killed in WWI, but we don't know his name and a sister who we don't know her name either, maybe Irene.
