Urbin Buchanan died at his home in Clearwater, Antelope county, Nebraska August 14, 1903, at 2:45 p.m. of kidney and liver complaint.

The deceased was born in New Milford, Pennsylvania, April 4, 1833. In the year of 1864 he enlisted in the 18th Penn. Reg. of Volunteers where he served as sergeant of the above regiment until the close of the war.

In the year (blank) he was married to Rhoda Bound.  To this union eight children were born, all of whom survive him excepting an only son who died in infancy.

In 1877 he emigrated to Nebraska, where he homesteaded two miles east of Clearwater and in 1899 he moved to Clearwater, where he made his home until death.

Four children came from a distance and three live here.

In 1890 Mr. Buchanan was baptized and became a member of the Methodist church.  He was a conspicuous figure on the streets and will be sadly missed by a large circle of friends who followed the remains to the last resting place.  The Clearwater Post No. 222 G. I'm not sure about Goldie being a child of Urbin and Rhoda.  In 1900 and 1910 Rhoda is listed as having 8 children with 7 living, Goldie would be the 9th child.  Also, Goldie does not appear as an heir in Urbin nor Rhoda's probate records.

Notes for Sarah Almira Buchanan:

Based on the 1910 Census I suspect that it was Sarah Almira Buchanan listed as "Mrs. Pierce from Sioux City" in the "Clearwater Record" newspaper clippings occurring around the death of her father.

The ages and birthplaces match up.

My first clue, however, should have been Charles Musselman and Myrtle Buchanan's marriage record which listed Mrs. Sarah Pierce as the witness.

I haven't been able to find this Pierce family of 5 children in the 1900 Census, yet.

Notes for Charles Musselman:

1880 Census - I haven't been able to locate Charles Musselman in this decade.  He would have been about 27 years old.

1882 - 1883 Sioux Falls City Directiory p. 70 lists:

Musselman, Charles, fr Sioux City, painter, bds Avenue House.

1885 - Probate Record for George Franklin Musselman stated that "Charles Musselman age 31, whose residence is unknown" was an heir. (Born: 1854)

1871, Jan 5 - Turner County, Dakota Territory Land Record:

I'm assuming that this Charles S. Musselman is related somehow to George F. Musselman due to the fact that they applied for land patents in Turner Co., SD for lands adjacent to each other.  And that George F. Musselman was a witness for Charles S. Musselman's age and citizenship.  It was only stated that Charles was " a single man over the year of twenty one years" and a citizen of the United States.

At first it was assumed that this Charles was George F.'s son, but his son "Charles" wouldn't have been more than 21 years old in 1872, he would have only been about 18 or 19.  And another record (Tilda E. Musselman's death record and burial record.) shows that George F.'s son's middle initial was "M" not "S". (They may have "fibbed" about his age in order to get more land.)  or he could be George F.'s brother, Charles Musselman born Feb 06, 1817 (age 55 in 1872, but may have died in PA in 1866  in Northampton Co., PA).

Land Patent record:

Witnesses in the document were George F. Musselman and Elmer Hatch it stated that:

"Charles S. Musselman entered upon and made a settlement in person on the said land since the First day of June, 1840, to wit: on the Fifth day of January, 1871; that he has built two dwelling houses and dug a well on said land and has lived in the said houses and made them his exclusive home, from the Fifteenth day of April, 1871, till the present time; that he did not remove from his own land, within the Territory of Dakota, to make the settlement above referred to; and that he has, since said settlement, plowed and cultivated about five acres of said land."

1872, April 13 - Charles S. Musselman, of Turner County and Territory of Dakota, sold to Charles H. Bennett, of Turner County and Territory of Dakota, for $300.00, the West Half of the NE Qtr, and NW Qtr of the SE Qtr, and NE Qtr. of the SW Qtr of Section 28, Township 96 Range 52 containing 160 acres. (Signed with "his mark" by Charles S. Musselman.)

It appears that there was some contest about who had the right to claim this land.  Charles H. Bennett seems to have been on the land too, but let Charles Musselman have it for the patent.  Charles Musselman sold the land to Charles H. Bennett the same day as the proving up 1872, April 13.

Marriage Notes for Myrtle Buchanan and Charles Musselman:

Marriage record transcript:

"Chauncey" Musselman, 2nd marriage, age 38, born in Marion, NY, occ: Painter, F: Geo. F. Musselman, M: Ann M. Toffing; married Myrtle Buchanan of Neligh, Neb.,  1st marriage, age 19, born in Great Bend, PA, F: "Quin"? (legibility) Buchanan, M: Rhoda Bond. Witness: Mrs. Sarah Pierce, married on Nov 21, 1891.

I suspect that Chauncey/Charles and Myrtle "had to get married" but lost the child and had their marriage annulled between 1892 and 1894/95.  Myrtle then remarried in about 1894/95 to John Riley, probably in northwest Iowa and this is where Isabel was born.  Isabel may be the biological daughter of Chauncey/Charles Musselman.

Chauncey, who is the same man as Charles M. Musselman as confirmed by the divorce filed in Woodbury County, Iowa for Myrtle and "Charles" Mussellman, remarried in 1898 to Emma C. Christanson in Woodbury Co., IA which was listed as his second marriage, as well, for he may have thought that his short (i.e. one month long) marriage to Myrtle didn't count.  Charles and Emma had a little girl, Tilda, who died at the age of two months, in Feb of 1900 in Sioux City.

Court Dockett Index, Woodbury Co., Iowa:

Case #: 8078  Book Y; Page 89 Filed Dec 24, 1891

Plaintiff: Myrtle "Mussellman"  Defendant: "Charles Mussellman".

No Decree was found, nor is it available.  Most records were purposely destroyed.  The only reference to be found is on microfilm at the Court House and this case number refers to Charles and Mytle Mussellman but is dated Jun 2, 1894, about two and a half years later. The wording states to the effect that the case was dismissed and that Myrtle had to pay $5.94 for court costs.  This is confusing.

I wonder if Myrtle aquired a divorce in Antelope Co., NE where her parents lived.  She married John Riley in about 1895.  No marriage record was found for Myrtle and John Riley in Woodbury Co., Iowa.
