Obituary #3:

("Union County Courier" April 21 1904 )

Henry Snyder, was born August 6, 1825 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In 1848, he was united in marriage to Caroline Snyder. A Short time afterwards, they both joined the Presbyterian Church. In 1855, the family removed to Stephenson County, Illinois near Freeport. From this place, Mr. Snyder went to the front in the defense of his country and served until mustered out by the close of the war. During his service, he contracted an ailment, which has been troublesome in the intervening years and was the occasion of his death.

The family moved to Dakota in 1868 and Mr. Snyder took up a homestead eight miles north west of Elk Point. Here his wife died in January 1884, she was buried in the cemetery of the neighboring St. Paul's (Norwegians) church where the remains of the husband have been laid at her side. After her death Mr. Snyder sold out and has been living with his children ever since. He has made three trips to California where four of his daughters live. He has been there during the past winter, but has been poorly. Feeling that the end was approaching and wishing to rest at the side of his wife he returned to Sioux City in February. From that time, he has gradually failed, though he was not confined to his bed until the sixth of April. He passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mussleman, about nine o'clock in the morning of April 16, aged 79 years, 8 months and 11 days.

A son and two daughters besides the wife have preceded him. There survive him a son, Frank, and seven daughters, Mrs. Fred Strobel of Elk Point, Mrs. Jennie Burkett of Boise, Idaho, Mrs Maria Mussleman, of Sioux City, Iowa, Mrs Alice Thompson, Mrs. Susie Johnson, Mrs. Maggie Maiken and Mrs. Nettie Sprague, all residing in or near Los Angeles, California.

Mr. Snyder was a quiet, unpretentious man, whose good qualities are well proven in the older residents. Another old settler has joined the company of those who have so rapidly been leaving during the past few months. Many will miss him.

The remains were brought here Sunday from Sioux City, Iowa funeral services being held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred Strobel at 1 P.M. Monday Rev. T. J. Woodcock officiating. The burial was in the St. Paul Norwegian cemetery by the side of his wife.

From Paul Bennett:

Carl,

Have been on a brief vacation but returned with possible help for your Henry Snyder’s father. Have not had time to really sort things out because of the number of pages and some of it is confusing. I do believe that at least we will be able to narrow your Henry’s parents down or eliminate the children of John Snyder, Sr as one of his parents.

John Snyder Sr. had the following children: Daniel, Henry, Elizabeth, John George, Catherine, John Jr., Jacob, John George, Susannah. One John George died very early. The other John George, called George, married my Catherine Bartholomew and Jacob married her sister Margaret Elizabeth Bartholomew.

Neither George or Jacob had a son by the name of Henry. George and Catherine’s children were: Deborah, Mary, David, Caroline, Catherine, Benjamin, John Adam, Eliza, Ephraim. Jacob and Margaret’s children were: Enos. Rebecca, Louisa, and Margaret.

Also, Daniel can be eliminated as the parent of Henry. Daniel married Elizabeth Hartzell and they had the following children: Elizabeth, Charles, Joseph, Simon, Solomon, Mary, Rachel, Rebecca, Sarah, Susan, Leah

If your Henry Snyder is connected to John Snyder, Sr, then it would have to be that he would be a son of either: Henry or John Snyder, Jr.

"A History of Union County, South Dakota, to 1880"

This history of Union County, SD was a Master's Degree thesis written by Edward Elliott Collins from an unusual perspective. He came to Dakota Territory in 1864 as a small boy and witnessed many of the events he wrote about first-hand. Collins was 77 years young when he wrote the thesis and received his Master's degree.

I think that there is a misprint for the name "Peuton".  I think it really is "Penton" and that Mrs. C. L. Penton is Fred Strobel's daughter, Zulla M. Strobel.

Notes for Charles Musselman:

1880 Census - I haven't been able to locate Charles in this decade, yet.  Jane E. Snyder cannot be found in this decade, either.  This supports my hunch that they were together, and Jessie M. (Musselman) Dunham was the result.

1880, November - Birth of Jessie M. Musselman in SD.  Charles and Jennie Snyder most likely got married in 1879/1880 in South Dakota, somewhere.

1881-1882 - Charles and Jennie separated.

1882, Sep 02 - Jennie Snyder and John W. Burkitt applied for marriage licence in St. Paul, MN.

1882 - 1883 Sioux Falls City Directiory p. 70 lists:

Musselman, Charles, fr Sioux City, painter, bds Avenue House.

(This edition's data may have been taken in 1881, and I wonder if Jane E. Snyder and Jessie M. Musselman were in Sioux Falls at this time, too.)

1885 - Probate Record for George Franklin Musselman stated that "Charles Musselman age 31, whose residence is unknown" was an heir. (Born: 1854) (No "Chauncey" was mentioned.)

Unlikely Possibility:

Omaha City Directory 1889-90

C M Musselman     cook     r 1318 Capitol avenue  Omaha  NE

1891, Nov 21 -  Married Myrtle Buchanan in Woodbury Co., IA.

(Charles/Chauncey's age is right, here, just the first name disagrees.)

1891, Dec 24th -  Woodbury Co., Iowa:  Myrtle filed for divorce from Charles.

1893, Dec 5th - Goldie Mae Musselman born in Clearwater, Antelope Co., NE.

1894, Jun 2nd - Woodbury Co., Iowa:  Divorce case was dismissed.  Confusing.

1894, Sep 13th - Myrtle Buchanan married John Riley in Harrison Co., IA

1898, Sep. 26 - "Second Marriage" - Emma Christanson in Woodbury Co., IA.

"Charles' second marriage, Occ: painter, Age: 35, (Actual age was 44) Place of birth: Marion, NY, F: George Musselman, M: Marie Topping  Emma's first marriage, age: 19 (acutally 13), Place of Birth: Neb.  F: John Christanson, M: Matilda Sedig, married on Sept 26, 1898  Witness: Mrs. S. J. Winegar and Matilda Christanson"

(Charles is the correct first name, but he would have been 44 years old, not 35.  Both Charles and Emma lied about their ages.)

1899, Dec 21 - Tilda Musselman born in Woodbury Co., IA

1900, Feb 20 - Tilda died in Woodbury Co., IA.  Buried in Musselman lot in Floyd Cemetery. See notes for Tilda.

1900, Feb 21 - Residing at 5th and Steuben in Sioux City.

1901 City Directory, Los Angeles, CA lists:

1903, Nov 06 - Divorce from Emma C. Christanson in Woodbury Co., Iowa.  Charles wasn't present for the final proceedings.

1900 - 1910 Census:  I haven't been able to locate an exact match for our Charles Musselman, but his death certificate states that he had been in California for 12 years at the time of his death in 1922.

1910 Tacoma, 3rd Ward, Pierce Co., Washington Census page 225A, ED-237 lists:

( Charles Musselman is one of four boarders boarding at 574 17th St., run by an Elizabeth Anderson, 56/Widowed/Canada.  I recognize no other names.)

1871, Jan 5 - Turner County, Dakota Territory Land Record:

I'm assuming that this Charles S. Musselman is related somehow to George F. Musselman due to the fact that they applied for land patents in Turner Co., SD for lands adjacent to each other.  And that George F. Musselman was a witness for Charles S. Musselman's age and citizenship.  It was only stated that Charles was " a single man over the year of twenty one years" and a citizen of the United States.

At first it was assumed that this Charles was George F.'s son, but his son "Charles" wouldn't have been more than 21 years old in 1872, he would have only been about 18 or 19.  And another record (Tilda E. Musselman's death record and burial record.) shows that George F.'s son's middle initial was "M" not "S". (They may have "fibbed" about his age in order to get more land.)

Land Patent record:

Witnesses in the document were George F. Musselman and Elmer Hatch it stated that:

"Charles S. Musselman entered upon and made a settlement in person on the said land since the First day of June, 1840, to wit: on the Fifth day of January, 1871; that he has built two dwelling houses and dug a well on said land and has lived in the said houses and made them his exclusive home, from the Fifteenth day of April, 1871, till the present time; that he did not remove from his own land, within the Territory of Dakota, to make the settlement above referred to; and that he has, since said settlement, plowed and cultivated about five acres of said land."

1872, April 13 - Charles S. Musselman, of Turner County and Territory of Dakota, sold to Charles H. Bennett, of Turner County and Territory of Dakota, for $300.00, the West Half of the NE Qtr, and NW Qtr of the SE Qtr, and NE Qtr. of the SW Qtr of Section 28, Township 96 Range 52 containing 160 acres. (Signed with "his mark" by Charles S. Musselman.)

It appears that there was some contest about who had the right to claim this land.  Charles H. Bennett seems to have been on the land too, but let Charles Musselman have it for the patent.  Charles Musselman sold the land to Charles H. Bennett the same day as the proving up.

Subject: John Burkett of Taunton and Fall River, Massachusetts

Message: Hello! I am looking for any information about a John Burkett (born in England) married in 1832 Taunton, MA to a Sarah White (born in Ireland- 1800) . They had 4 daughters: Jane (born 1831!), Sarah Elizabeth (born 11-15-1835), Mary Ellen (1837 in Fall River) and Elizabeth (born 1840 in Fall River). To make matters more confusing, they sometimes spelled their name "Burkitt" or Burkit. John died at some point between 1841 and 1849 and Sarah White Burkett is next found married to a James Cooper and living in Frankford,Philadelphia in 1850. The 2 younger Burkett girls get married- Mary Ellen Burkett to Andrew Jackson Williams in 1864 and Elizabeth Burkett (or Burkitt) to a George W Mathers in 2-27-1868. Does anyone have any data on John Burkett and his ancestors? I suspect he may have had 2 brothers: Robert and William of Taunton and Fall River, respectively. Thanks in advance!

Notes for Theodore F. Musselman:

1878, May 28th - Homestead Land Application "Cash Entry" Record from Bureau of Land Management, National Archives Washington, D. C.

(Application #4966, Final Certificate # 1543)

Theodore Musselman "of Hutchinson Co., D.T."  applied for land under Section 2289, Revised Statutes of the United states, at the Land Office in Yankton, D. T. for the Northeast quarter of Section 34, Township 97N, Range 59W, 160 acres, of Hutchinson County, D. T.

According to the documentation, he resided on this property and raised crops beginning on May 28, 1878, filed his intention to prove up on December 6, 1881, and proved up on January 16, 1882 at the Land Office in Yankton, D. T.  Witnesses to his proving up were: Gabriel G. Lewis, Alexander McGill, William Andrews, and William Pierre all of Scotland, Bon Homme Co., D. T.  Having payed $200.00 on January 18, 1882, finally being approved on June 28, 1884, patented and filed on January 30, 1885.

Announcement of his intent to prove up was published in the "Dakota Citizen" from December 15, 1881 to January 12, 1882 and read as follows:

"Land office at Yankton, D. T., December 9, 1881 - - Notice is hereby given that the following named settler has filed notice of his intention to make final proof in support of his claim and that said proof will be made before J. C. Boyles, clerk of the district court for Hutchinson county, D. T. at Olivet the county seat on Monday, January 16, 1882 11 a.m. viz.: Theodore Musselman, homestead entry No. 49668, for the northeast quarter section 34, town 97, range 59.  He names the following witnesses to prove his continuous residence upon and cultivation of said land, viz.: Gabriel G. Lewis, Wm. Pierce, Alexancer McGill, and Wm. Andrews, all of Scotland, Dakota.   G. A. Wetter, Regitser."

Other interesting items from this document are 1) Theodore's mentioning of "having a wife" in an affidavit dated March 24th, 1881, which helps to narrow the time period in which he and Maria were actually married; and 2) that he built a house, 16' x 21', and a stable, all worth approximately $175 and he raised crops on 22 acres since having settled.

1880 Dakota Census Hutchinson Co., Twp 97, Range 59, (South Sharon Twp.) page 95  dated June 17th:

Land Office, for a balance of $200.00, the NE Quarter of Section 34, Twp. 97 Range 59, (South Sharon Twp.) of Hutchinson Co., SD. (160 acres)  I think that he was Homesteading this land since 1879, then payed for it in 1882.

1882, January 23 - Theodore and Maria obtained a mortgage for this same property in the amount of $400.00 from John C. Nutting guardian of Lizzie May Keywood. Which was carried over to George F. Musselman and then on to Carrie until February 14th, 1887.  (See notes for George F. Musselman.) (Side note on record: "This mortgage is fully satisfied and discharged as will more fully appear in book "10" page 110. signed F. J. Eisenman Register of Deeds.)

        18.  George Harry4 Musselman (Maria Hannah3 Snyder, Henry2, Snyder1) was born Aug 10, 1881 in Scotland, Bonhomme Co., SD50,51, and died Feb 10, 1957 in El Monte, CA.  He married Hattie Bell Barr Jun 20, 1901 in Sioux City, IA52,53, daughter of Thomas Barr and Charlotte Smithers.  She was born Jan 25, 1879 in Sioux City, IA54, and died Nov 22, 1952 in El Monte, CA.

Notes for George Harry Musselman:

Delayed birth certificate of George Musselman states that an Alice Thompson, "Aunt of above signed"  participated in the verification of George's birth along with Thomas Musselman, George's son.

Search of the South Dakota Birth Records Online revealed a "Martha Alice Snyder" married to a Cyrus "Thompson" and having a son, Rueben Ray Thompson born in Union Co., SD on October 15, 1885.  Delayed birth certificate filed on February 28, 1942.  This must be the "Aunt Alice Thompson".

According to Vera Musselman, when Elmer and his family moved to California they stayed with a Ken Thompson and his brother (Vera couldn't remember his name, could it be "Rueben"?).  Vera remembers them as being Elmer's cousins.

"MEMORIES"

by Charlene Musselman Peterson

One of the grandchildren said they didn't have many memories of Grandpa alone and I agree, they were and did things together most of the time.  They lived a very private life and didn't discuss their business with many people even family.  Most of the memories are of the things we did at their home.

Remember how they made holidays special cutting out turkey name tags for the Thanksgiving table.  How very long that dinning room table was.  How Grandma had the four oldest grand-daughters over and decorated the special Santa Claus cookies.  Christmas morning was always set aside for breakfast at Grandpa and Grandma Musselman's - a tradition that had lasted through the years.

Remember the little evergreen tree in the back yard which is now taller than the house, the chicken family yard ornaments, and the picnics.

Remember the beautiful flower garden they always worked in together - the beautiful strong iris' and darling little pansies.  The times we ran away from home only to go to Grandma Musselman's and bring home a bouquet of flowers.

Remember the early Sunday morning breakfast picnics in Stone Park.

Grandpa was an avid sports fan and even in the last weeks he would criticize a play or call in the ball game he was watching on TV after dinner on Sunday.  I might add this trait of criticism and howling at ball game is one of the reasons you hear "That's the Musselman in him or her." and many of us have inherited this talent.

More recent memories that some of the great grandchildren will remember about Grandpa are:  His dog, Tan.  Stopping at his house with the free cheese, taking over his dinner tray, the way he talked, the way his eyes lit when he knew he was having special company, and last the annual decorating of the Christmas tree which meant so much.

Grandpa and Grandma Musselman added so very much to our lives but the most important thing is this very, very large wonderful, loving, forgiving, family that we are so very fortunate to have.

In March of 1999, Vera Musselman Saris told the following story to Carl Musselman.

Bart and Goldie Luce went to California to visit or Bart found work out there.  Their Snyder cousins had moved out there around 1902.  While there, they lived in an "oil-lease" house.  After returning to Sioux City, and while they, Elmer, Mabel, Eva, and Vera were attending a cowboy movie show, Goldie recognized the house that she and Bart lived in, in California, on the movie screen.  There was a shoot out being performed around or near the house. Goldie jumped up out of her seat and shouted, "Bart! That's our house!".  It was after this that they all decided to move out to California.
