There
were only a very few people that moved into this section of the Black Swamp in
1833. More came in 1834 and 1835. They kept coming. In 1836 there were enough
residents in Swan Creek that they organized as a township. In 1837 Chesterfield
and Amboy were organized. In 1838 Clinton and Gorham were organized. German
Township followed in 1839. In 1841 Royalton, Pike, Franklin and Fulton were
organized. Dover was the last township to be organized in 1842.
The
officers of the twelve townships asked the state legislature in 1849 to
establish them as a county. To meet the state requirements for size, they had
to include part of Williams county, and a row of sections south from Henry
County. Early in 1850 the state legislature passed a law establishing the
twelve townships as Fulton County.

I
am seeking any information available for Joseph BABCOCK (no middle name or
initial). He was born in Rhode Island, possibly in Providence (I do not know if
it was city or county) in 1798-1808. His wife's name was Hannah (no surname
known).
They
had a son named George Clark BABCOCK, born in Providence, R.I. Dec.25,1830. I
am looking for Hannah's surname and Joseph's middle name. Both were the same
age. They left RI sometime after 1830 and settled in Ohio in 1835, teaching in
one of Ohio's first log cabin schools. Information about George BABCOCK's birth
might have the full names of his parents listed.

"History
of Henry and Fulton Counties, Ohio" page 495:
"
Shubal Nixon settled here in 1835. He is yet living, residing in the State of
Michigan. Joseph Babcock came in 1835. He was a school teacher of the first
class, and took great pleasure in the advancement of his school. He taught in
the first school-house built in the township. He died in 1868. His wife survived him two years, dying in
1870, leaving four sons and two daughters.
Robert
J., one of the sons, was elected justice of the peace in 1881, and holds that
office today."
This
sounds like the right time of settling in Fulton Co., and he had four sons
(Isaac B. included) and two daughters (Mary included), and one of the sons was
Robert James. "J". Our Joseph and Hannah Babcock died two years
apart, Hannah surviving Joseph, but the years that I have are 1866 and 1868.
On
page 501, under the subtitle of School-houses Joseph Babcock is listed as
"Among the early teachers were..........."
On
page 503-504:
"The
first building destroyed by fire was the log cabin owned by Joseph Babcock, in
1841, near where the town hall now stands. The next was the log cabin of Joel
Johnson, near Luke's Corners, in the fall of 1843. Johnson and his wife were
gathering hickory nuts some distance from the house, leaving two small children
in the care of Joel's father, an old gentleman, and quite
deaf,
who was near shaving shingles; when G. C. Babcock, who was returning to his
home some distance north, disvoered that the house was on fire, and immediately
gave the alarm. When help arrived.................."
On
page 505:
"It
has been said at the beginning of this chapter that there were, as near as can
now be ascertained, twenty-five families within the present limits of Fulton township
up to 1836, then an unorganized territory. They were ..................... In
1835 were............Joseph Babcock, ...........Hiram Clark, Cyrus Clark,

(Shenandoah
World, Jan 4, 1907)
The funeral of grandmother
Bunting, mother of Mr. I. N. Bunting of this place, was held in the Methodist
church on Tuesday at 10 o'clock a.m. conducted by the pastor Rev. Mott
Mitchell. We were unable to get the
facts concerning her life more than that she has been a widow for a number of
years and has lived with her daughter, Mrs. John Runyan who formerly lived near
here but now lives near Braddyville.
Mrs. Bunting was well advanced in years and had not been well enough to
visit her Coin friends for some time.
She was a good christian woman and has gone to her reward. Interment was made at Snow Hill cemetery.

BABCOCK,
I. N., lives two miles from Sacramento,
his Post Office; owns thirty-five acres of land; was born in Rhode Island in
1828; removed when four years of age to Ohio, and lived there into 1849; he
came to California in that year, driving oxen across the plains, and settled
where he has resided ever since; is now engaged in farming, stock raising and
dairying. Mr. Babcock says, when he
arrived where Sacramento now stands, the ground was covered with campers,
anxious to get to the mines, but who had no means of conveyance; he commenced
teaming to the mines, receiving 10c per pound for freight; with his six oxen
being made as high as $300 per week. He
was married in 1868 to Mrs. Evaline Leak, a native of Kentucky, who had six
children by her former husband; she has borne Mr. Babcock one daughter. He held the office of Justice of the Peace
from 1852 to '54, and of Supervisor from 1858 to '60.
From
Barbara Leak:
I
also have a reference to an Isaac Babcock being part of a wagon train company
headed for California, encamped at St. Joseph, Missouri, on 10 April 1849. He
and several other men in the company are listed as being from Cass Co,
Michigan. In looking at a map, it looks like Cass Co, MI, is not too terribly
far from Fulton Co, OH. Could this be a missing link?

"The

Another
Pioneer Gone.
Mr.
I.N. Babcock, of Lone Star, died in Auburn, Wednesday morning. He was taken
seriously ill about two weeks ago, and had been brought to Auburn to be nearer
medical aid. Mr. Babcock was an old pioneer, having come to California in '49.
For a number of years he was a resident of Sacramento county and kept the toll
house there. He has resided in this county upwards of twenty years, and is well
known in this part of the State. Deceased leaves a wife and daughter, Mrs. T.P.
Cannon, and five step sons and daughters, viz. Mrs. L.J. Dickson and L.W. Leak,
of Auburn, Mrs. Ellen Foley and Mrs. Libbie Womble, of Sacramento, and J.H.
Leak, late of Auburn, now of Sacramento, to mourn his loss. He was aged 63
years, 11 months and 7 days. The funeral was held Thursday, at 10 o'clock A.M.
from the M.E. Church.
The
following is from a newspaper article about Evaline's daughter, Nancy Elizabeth
(Leak) Womble:
The
Sacramento Union (Sacramento, Calif.), 23 Mar 1941:
. . .Her father was John L. Leak, who
became township justice of the north side American river district. After his
death, Mrs. [Evaline] Leak, with a family of six children, married her
husband's friend, Isaac Newton Babcock, also a justice and who, at one time,
operated a ferry over the American river where the bridge now stands at 12th
street [Sacramento].
He was the toll collector for 25 years on
American river bridge.
From
a biographical sketch on Evaline's son, L.W. Leak, published in History of
Placer and Nevada Counties, California (Los Angeles: Historic Record Co, 1924),
pp. 1240-1241:
.
. .Evelyn [sic] (Leach) Leak remarried in Sacramento, being united with Hon.
I.N. Babcock, a Forty-Niner. . . Mr. Babcock served as a supervisor of
Sacramento County and later as a deputy sheriff and jailor in Sacramento. He
was a pioneer of '49 and made his start with a market garden out on 12th
Street, now North Sacramento. In the early mining days he made as high as $100
profit on one sale of fruit and vegetables, which he wheeled to Sacramento City
on a wheelbarrow.

I
don't know where Delaware Co. is but my wife has family ties to Leaks in Boone
County and Montgomery Co.Indiana. The 1850 Census for Boone County lists John
Leach, but we know that it is wrong and his name was Leak. The August 27th
enumeration for District #7 shows his family on page 117, Dwelling #794 Family
#565. His wife Nancy was 46 years old and he was 41. There were eight children
age 2 through 18. They were as follows: Anderson, 18; Evaline, 16, Robert, 14;
Emily, 11; Lucy, 9; John M., 8; Nancy, 6 and James T. 2.
The
Mongomery Co. , Township (difficult to read, perhaps "Union"), Leak
family, shows Elizebeth Week, which we know was actually Elizabeth
"Betsy" (Brockman) Leak , age 48 as the head of the household. My
record shows that she had been married to Elisha Leak (1791-1845), on December
25, 1820 in Kentucky (Perhaps Mason or Boone Co.). A person, I asume was her
mother, Emily "Milla" Brockman, age 77 also lived at the home. (There
are several marriages of Brockmans to Leaks.) The children were James L. 23,
John 21, Madaline 19, Emily 17, Jackson 14, Sarah J. 11, and Elizabeth 9. Some
sources of information, referenced on what I have, but not sure where it came
from are "The Brockman Scrapbook" by William Everett Brockman, 1952
and "Kinfolks" by William Curry Harllee, 1934.
There
were also some family members from Hendricks Co, Indiana.
The
Leak my wife is related to is John Lewis Leak, age 21 above, born in Montgomery
Co., Indiana in the ealry fall of 1828, and married Evaline Leak, from
Montgomery Co. as listed above, age 16 in 1850. In fact she was age 16 when
they married on December 24, 1850. in Boone Co. Indiana. They moved in 1854 to
Iowa. Due to having TB, he decided to move to California and a dryer climate.
They were on a wagon train headed by a Captain Edington, it is assumed they
followed the Mormon Trail. It is reported that it took six months. They were
enumerated in the 1860 census in the Utah Territory, Carson Valley, now Nevada.
It shows five children, age 2 through 8. He came to the Auburn and Sacramento,
CA area. He died on November 29, 1866. She was 32 years old and she married
Isaac Newton Babcock on Jan. 2, 1868. He was a 49er and a good stepfather to
the children.
Hope
this gives you a lead to some of your ancestors. If not it was fun telling you
this short part of my wife's family history.

The
name of John Leach listed on the 1850 census for Boone Co., Indiana, is
correct. John Lewis Leak of Montgomery Co., IN, married Evaline Leach. She was
the daughter of John and Nancy (Dale) Leach of Boone Co, IN.
Which
of John and Evaline's children does your wife descend from? Their youngest son,
James Henry Leak, was my great grandfather.

Linda,
Your
Elizabeth Leak of Polk Co., Iowa, was the daughter of Andrew and Emila
(Brockman) Brockman. She was born probably in Orange Co., VA. She married
Elisha Leak in Boone Co., KY, 19 Dec 1820. They moved to Montgomery Co., IN, in
1825, where Elisha died in 1845. Elizabeth and her children moved to Polk Co.,
IA, around 1853. She died in 1872 and is buried in Spry Cemetery, as are her
mother and one of her daughters. Her children were:

WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
(Shenandoah
Sentinel Post dated Jan 5, 1915)
GOLDEN
ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATED AT COIN
Guests
Drank "Bride's" Health from Pitcher, First Wedding Present
Fifty years ago Christmas day at
noon Rebecca A. Runyon and Isaac N. Bunting were married. Christmas day this year they celebrated
their Golden anniversary at their home at Coin.
Rebecca A. Runyon was born in
Highland County, Ohio, January 15, 1849 where she lived until 1857 when she
moved with her parents to Marion County, Iowa where she lived until her
marriage to Mr. Bunting December 25, 1864.
Isaac N. Bunting was born at
Bellcenter, Ohio, April 10, 1844 and when still a very small child moved with
his parents to Cass County, Michigan and later in 1857 to Calhoun County, Iowa,
where he lived until 1862 when he moved to Marion County where he met the lady
who became his wife.
The first home of this couple
was in Marion county, from there they moved to Missouri and thence to Page
county in 1868 upon the home farm four and one-half miles north of Coin where
they lived until 1896 when they moved to their present home on Broadway.
They have had five children, Wm.
Bunting of Shambaugh, George W. Bunting of Wessington Springs, S. D., John F.
Bunting who died in early childhood, Edward Bunting of Coin and one daughter,
Maybelle, Mrs. Earl Flowers of Huron, S. D.
The four children were present to help enliven and endear this anniversary.
The out of town dinner guests
Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Maranville, a sister of the bride and Mrs. Maude Renshaw and
daughter, Miss Mary, all of Shenandoah.
The other guests from this locality were; Mrs. M. J. Tefft, a sister of
the bride and also the only guest who had been present at the former wedding
and John Martin and Mrs. W. N. Ellis.
Those present at the reception
given in honor of this esteemed couple were:
Mr. and Mrs. William Manasmith; Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Draper; Mr. and Mrs.
E. T. Straton; Dr. and Mrs. King, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Duncan; Mrs. Izeta Brush, Charles Brush; Mr. and
Mrs. William Hines; Mr. and Mrs. Homer Runyan; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Runyan and C.
W. Miller.
The color scheme of the
decorations were white and gold. The
table was prettily and tastefully decorated in yellow cross streamers and
ribbons of white and gold extending from the chandelier to the table ending in
large yellow and white crysanthemums in a circle about the center piece upon
which the bridal cake rested. The cake
was an enormous angel food about eighteen inches across and decorated with
fifty yellow and white candles.
The one thing of great interest
to those present was a water pitcher given the bride by her mother and used at
the first wedding dinner. The pitcher
was decorated with the golden wedding badges, like the guests wore and given a
prominent place upon the table.
After the dinner the reception
guests were more than glad to drink the health of the bride and groom from this
historical old pitcher.
Each one of the guests received
a piece of the wedding cake either to eat or to put under his pillow and dream
over.
Renewing
old acquaintances and retelling old stories and jokes made the afternoon indeed
a very pleasant one.
The pictures of the entire group
of friends and relatives were taken by the bride's nephew, John Martin.

In

"James
Iowa Feb 9, 1902
I
will try to __________ your letter which I received. _______ _______ to hear
from you. We are having some very cold
weather & snow. It is trying to
snow today & looked like we mite have a storm. We have been having bad colds.
Ina had been about sick this last week.
I was afraid she was going to pneumonia but she is better now..
Earl froze his face coming home from
school last Monday. I put snow on his
face so it didn't get sore. He only
missed 1 day of school this winter & he went to town to get him a new pair
of shoes. Their teacher was sick one
week.
We all went to Ma Christmas but Arthur
& Earl & they were there the day before & didn't want to go. Ma got a big lamp. Robbie got it for her & I & Arthur got her a bed
spread. Effie got her a pair of mittens & Ina got her a vace
and 2 aprons.
Earl said he was going to get her a
facinata (?) but he didn't get it.
Ina got a little stove & burrow
& doll cradle & Effie got a photograph album & Earl got a musical
top & a train of cars & Arthur a book & I got Charlie & Robbie
a mustache cup & saucer & John & Arthur a necktie & Ina got
Charlie a necktie & I got O.
Ma gave me a new black satton under
skirt since & the children got candy & nuts & oranges.
Ma had rosted turkey for dinner &
you know how good Ma can rost turkey.
Uncle George McGuin didn't come to see
Ma. Aunt Marge has him sick. One of the boys was at Ma last week for a
little while. He lives 42 miles west of
Sioux City. I & Ma are going to see
them this week. We are going Friday
& come back Monday. They are going
to move to Avoca about the ____ of this mon.
Ma has got all of her sail (sale) money
but Ed Bartles & I guess John will carry him over another year. Sullivan was the first to pay. He paid as soon as his note was due. Ma has rented her place to Charlie Reid again
for another year.
You wrote that May (Mary) Bunting had a
little boy & you wrote in your other letter that some one had a little girl
& I thought that It was May (Mary) who was it.
We heard that John Runyon had sold out
again. Do you ever hear anything of
Mrs. Reid or where she is?
We are going to bucher tomorrow if it
isn't storming.
Well I guess I have wrote all I can
think of for this time. I want to get
ready to go to Sunday school so this is all for this time.
So, good by. Write soon.

Mary raised her own two children, a
foster daughter Effie Ellis, as well as her two grand-daughters Mae and Elsie,
and took in her niece, Nora Babcock Hancock and her children, for a while. She was a farmers wife and her life revolved
around her family and her church. She
was very active in the Ladies Circle and other activities. She kept a large garden and canned fruits
and vegetables as well as keeping chickens for eggs and meat. They had what has become known as a truck
farm. She made beautiful quilts until
her eyesight became poor. Each of her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren had quilts made for them. She made a quilt from Mae and Elsie's
mother's dresses as a keepsake.
