Generation No. 1

        1.  Braden1 Drake was born Abt. 1823 in Pennsylvania, and died Jul 07, 1897 in Streator, LaSalle Co., IL.  He married (1) Rebecca Eliza McNeal Bef. 1843 in Pennsylvania, daughter of David McNeal and Rebecca Springer.  She was born Abt. 1825 in Pennsylvania, and died Bet. 1860 - 1864 in LaSalle Co., IL.  He married (2) Mary Jane K. McDowell Dec 22, 1864 in LaSalle Co., IL1.  She was born Abt. 1829 in Portage Co., OH, and died May 16, 1878 in South Ottawa, LaSalle Co., IL2.  He married (3) Catherine Cooper Apr 04, 1880 in LaSalle Co., IL.  She was born Abt. 1836 in Germany.

Notes for Braden Drake:

I have a hunch that Braden Drake's parents were Isaac and Margaret Drake of Fayette Co., PA as shown below in the 1830, 1840, and 1850 Census'.  Braden would fit in as one of the boys in this family, and not shown in the 1850 Census with Isaac, for Braden was married and his own family by then, also in Faytette Co., PA.

Another postive clue is that the Bute family was close and connected to the Drake family, and the Butes were from Fayette Co., PA, with some moving to LaSalle Co., IL just like the Drakes.

TERRIBLE CALAMITY ON THE VERMILLION

"THREE MEN DROWNED -   On Thursday of last week (Feb. 23d) four men, in a wagon with two horses, undertook to ford the Vermilion creek at Sandy Ford, about two miles below Golloway, in the town of Eagle, in this county. (LaSalle)  The creek was greatly swollen at the time, being at least 5 feet above fording depth -- while but a few rods below the ford a gorge of ice had formed, the water drawing with a rapid current toward its centre.  The team had gone but a rod or two into the water before the wagon became uncoupled and the axletree detached from the tongue, so that the horses, being loose, swam for the opposite shore while the wagon was carried down into and under the ice, taking three men under with it, the fourth man escaping by clinging to the horses.  The men were from Rugg's Grove, going to Putnam county, and strangers to the ford, or they certainly would not have attempted to cross at such a stage of water.  The names of the three that were drowned, we learn were Drake, Ball, and Prober, and the name of the fourth, who was saved, was Foster. -- At latest accounts the bodies of the drowned men had not been recovered."

Military Record:

(From National Archives)

Jeduthian Weller (sometimes written Jeduthan, Jeduth, Jeduthen, Jednathin, and Jonathan.) born in New York, aged eighteen, occupation farmer, being from Serena Twp., La Salle Co., Illinois, voluntarily enlisted for one year on March 10, 1865, at Joliet, Illinois, assigned as a Private to Co. D, 11th Regiment of the Illinois Cavalry on March 11, 1865.  Having a physical description of blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion, and height of 5 feet 9 1/2 inches.

Eleanora Weller Reid was the neice of Nellie Weller Ubil (aka: Mary E. Drake Ubil), they were ten years apart in age and both were young when the Butes took them in, and then moved to Iowa from Illinois in about 1877.  Nellie was about 18 and Eleanora was about 8 years old.

Biography:

("History of Page County")

JAMES R. UBIL, an energetic and successful farmer of Morton Township, was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, August 31, 1850, and is the son of Peter and Elizabeth B. (Seymour) Ubil, natives of Virginia and Pennsylvania respectively, and of German extraction.  When he was one year old the family moved to Juniata County, Pennsylvania, where the father still resides; the mother died in March, 1885.  They reared a family of four children: James R., of whom this notice is written; John L., Thomas K., and David H., also a resident of Page County.  In early life the father was engaged in contracting and building, and afterward was interested in the manufacture of wagons.  When the war broke out he enlisted in the Sixteenth Pennsylvania Cavalry, under Captain Robinson, and served three years, being discharged as Sergeant.  After the close of the war he returned to his home to take up the more peaceful pursuit of agriculture, which he still follows.

James R. was trained to the duties of a farmer after his thirteenth year; previous to that time he had lived in Johnstown.  He obtained a good education in the common schools, and remained with his parents until he was twenty-one years of age.  He then undertook to steer his own craft, and chose the occupation of farming as one for which he was best fitted and which he considered most independent; he worked by the month for a year and then rented land for two years.  In March 1876, he was caught in the tide of western emigration, and landed in Page County, Iowa.  The first three years of his residence here he worked by the month on a farm, and then for two years he rented land.  At the end of this time he removed to a farm which he had bought in 1877; it consisted of eighty acres of wild land.  From time to time he has erected the necessary buildings, and has made various valuable improvements.  He bought the farm for $975, and January, 1889, he sold it for $3,000.  He is a man well calculated to advance the standing of the community in which he lives, and he has certainly done his share in making Morton Township one of the most desirable in the county.  He has purchased 160 acres of land on sections 16 and 17, Morton Township, at a cost of $6,100, and will make that his future home.

Mr. Ubil was united in marriage March 11, 1880, to Miss Mary E. Drake, a daughter of Braden and Eliza (McNeal) Drake.  She was born in La Salle County, Illinois, August 6, 1859.  They are the parents of two children: Myrtle, born January 2, 1882, and Verna M., born September 26, 1887.

Mr. and Mrs. Ubil are members of the Presbyterian Church.  Politically he is a stanch Republican, and has represented the people of his township as a member of the school board.

Biography:

(Morton Milestones 1870 - 1970 page 458)

Roy Shutwell

Marion Roy Shutwell married Myrtle Ubil, daughter of J. R. Ubil, on February 19, 1908, at the Ubil home on the NE 1/4, Section 17, Morton Township.

One incident in connection with this wedding was long remembered by some of the party. The groom's father went to Clarinda to obtain the license and got caught in a severe snowstorm. He was able to return to Coin on the train but had to walk from Coin to the Ubil home, reaching there in time for the young couple to meet their wedding engagement.  The groom's parents gave an informal reception at their home the following day. The bride and groom started housekeeping on a farm two miles south of Shenandoah, and a few years later moved to the home farm in Morton Township.  In 1919 during a visit to Boise valley they purchased a hone and called it "Royal Ranch."  In 1920, Roy and Myrtle moved to their ranch near Boise, Idaho. They lived to celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary there. They were members or the Christian Church.  They sold the ranch in January, 1959, and moved to a new home near Eagle, Idaho.  Myrtle passed away February 22, 1962.  Roy sold his home August, 1968, and bought a small home and now lives in Caldwell, Idaho.

Roy was always interested in purebred cattle and hogs.  He and George Bird had a purebred Duroc Jersey hog sale February 8, 1913, in Iowa.  He showed purebred livestock at Boise State Fair for forty-three years - the exhibitor holding the longest record at the State Fair.  He was selected honorary member of the livestock club called Hall of Fame at the Idaho University.  He was a charter member of the Ada County Farm Bureau, The Dairymen's Co-op Creamery in Caldwell, The Ada County Agrarian Club, active in the Idaho Farm Bureau, the State Swine Growers Association and has long been active helping young people in FFA and 4-H organizations, as he was a 4-H leader in the 1920's.

       23            v.  Goldie Drake47.

        9.  Elmer2 Drake (Braden1) was born Abt. 1868 in Illinois, and died Jan 23, 1943.  He married Nellie.  She was born Abt. 1872 in Nebraska, and died Feb 1953.

Notes for Elmer Drake:

This Elmer Drake was born 10 years prior to the Elmer Drake listed as Braden Drake Sr.'s son in the 1870 and 1880 Census' in Lasalle Co., IL.  Another inconsistancy is Elmer's mother's birth place as Ireland instead of Ohio as stated in the 1870 and 1880 Census'.

Patt Scott, the contributor to the information stating that Merle Drake's middle name was "Braden" lead me to research this family further.

A confincing lead to matching up these two Elmer Drakes is this:

From "LaSalle County Centenial"; Directory of Former Ottawa Residents; 1831-1931 page 20:

Drake -- Elmer, Broken Bow, Neb., operates a farm; left this city in 1880.

Drake -- Braden, Jr., 1830 North 25th? street, Omaha, Neb., taxi driver, left this city about 1880
