Descendants of William Smithers

Generation No. 1

      1. William¹ Smithers was born Abt. 1805 in England, and died Abt. 1854 in Ontario, Canada. He married Charlotte Sivyer¹ Jan 29, 1828 in Stedham, Sussex, England, daughter of George Sivyer and Mary Simms. She was born Jul 1808 in Heyshott, Sussex, England, and died Jan 27, 1889 in Huron Co., Ontario, Canada ².

Notes for William Smithers:
      I am now positive that this William and Charlotte (Sivyer) Smithers family is that of my GG Grandmother, Charlotte (Smithers) Taber-Barr. The 1925 Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa State Census listed her parents as William S. "Barr" (should be "Smithers") and Charlotte "Chivier" (close to "Sivier"). When comparing the 1851 Oxford Co., Ontario, Canada Census entry for the William Smithers family and the information that is known about my GG Grandmother, the Charlotte Smithers in the census entry has an age of 15, thus a birth year of about 1836, which is within one year of the known birth year for my GG Grandmother of 1837.
      Also, when analyzing the birthplaces of the children, the last child born in England was born in about 1845 and the first child to be born in Canada was born in about 1847. So, this family immigrated from England to Canada between 1845 and 1847, which correpsonds to the information in my GG Grandmother's obituary, which states that she moved with her family from England to Canada at the age of 10 years old, which would have been in about 1847.

      There are some geographical connections between my GG Grandmother and other members of this William Smithers family.
      The first one is that of the area Sussex, England which is mentioned in Charlotte's obituary, and in the LDS Marriage information for this William and Charlotte (Sivyer) Smithers couple. I'm sure that this the same couple that moved to Ontario, for a cemetery index reference from Tuckersmith, Huron Co., Ont., actually lists this Charlotte's maiden name as Sivyer.
      The next connection is the area surrounding Woodstock, Oxford Co., Ontario, including Seaforth in Huron Co., and Port Rowan in Norfolk Co., Ontario. Oxford Co. is between Huron and Norfolk Counties. Members of this Smithers family lived in Oxford and Huron Counties, and my GG Grandmother married John Taber in Port Rowan, Norfolk Co., Ontario, then their eldest children were born in Huron County.
      The third geographical connection is that of Redwood Co., MN. The John and Charlotte (Smithers) Taber family moved to Redwood Co., MN in 1869. The Thomas Smithers, from this William and Charlotte (Sivyer) Smithers family, and although his age is too young by about five years, appears there in 1885 living with one of my GG Grandmother's daughters, his neice. Also in Redwood Co., MN was William James Smithers, son of Stephen Smithers who was also a son of William and Charlotte (Sivyer) Smithers.
      The fourth geographical connection is that of Sioux City in Woodbury Co., Iowa. After leaving the John Taber family, my GG Grandmother moved to Sioux City with Thomas Barr between 1875 and 1879. In the 1895 Sioux City, Woodbury Co., Iowa State Census William James Smithers, Charlotte's nephew, is living with Charlotte and Thomas Barr.

      The Thomas H. Smithers that married Martha Cuff and that appears in Sioux City, IA in 1895, Plymouth Co., IA in 1900, and then Sherburne Co., MN in 1910 and 1920 was not an exact match for belonging to this William Smithers family. The Thomas H. Smithers who married Martha Cuff has been listed as being born April 1, 1840 and his father's name was John Smithers, according to his death certificate. A a coinsidence still remains with Martha Cuff's sister Caroline marrying William James Smithers, son of Stephen Smithers.
      My gut feelilng that this Thomas Smithers is the brother to Charlotte (Smithers) Taber-Barr has now been confirmed by Elaine Smithers, who is in possession of the marriage record between Thomas H. Smithers and his first wife, Dinah Fowler, in Ontario, Canada, which lists Thomas' parents as William and Charlotte Smithers, not John Smithers as stated in Thomas' death certificate.
