“When de Larrimers store was finished there was quite a discussion as to whether the place should be called Spencerville, after David Spencer or Williamsburg, after William Lemmon. Several people who were in favour of Spencerville, procured a bottle of rum and getting on the rooftop christened the place Spencerville, and Spencerville it is and ever shall be.”

Dear Carl,

Sorry to be so long in replying but I teach and have been busy.

I am sending you what I know about my William Lammon, the brother of my direct line Ezekiel Lammon. Some of your names and dates may fit what I have about this William. I haven't found any other information about William Lemon after the latest date in this biography--maybe I haven't looked that hard because he isn't my direct line. I do notice the name
Hannah associated with your family, and Hannah is the name of William's mother as well as sister.

Hope this helps.

Individual Narrative of William Lammon (191)

William Lammon (191) was born on 7 Apr 1780 at Dorset, Bennington, Vermont, the son of William and Hannah Lammon.

He bought his brother's interest in his father William's estate from Ezekiel Lammon (150) on 27 Mar 1802 at Dorset, Bennington, Vermont, for $100. He sold Ezekiel Lammon (150)'s share in Ezekiel's father's estate on 18 Feb 1806 at Dorset, Bennington, Vermont, back to Ezekiel. He lived at Canton, St. Lawrence, New York at the time of this deed. He sold his
share of his father's estate on 26 Mar 1806 in Dorset, Bennington, Vermont, to his sister and brother-in-law, Mary and John Lamfear for $100. (His father did not die until 1811, but the family was selling their interests in his estate back and forth for several years before his death.).

He was probably enumerated in the in 1810 Census at Canton, St. Lawrence, New York as the William Lemmon, aged 26 to 45. A woman of the same age and 2 girls are listed with him.

The History of St. Lawrence County, New York has this paragraph on page 209 about a William Lemon: "In the neighborhood of South Canton lived one William Lemon, a 'Green mountain boy,' who stood six feet seven inches in his stockings. He came from Vermont in company with S. Baldwin and John Farwell, passing through Troy. On the route they met some teams, and, as the snow was deep, the teamsters refused to give half of the road. After some words Mr. Baldwin said, "You had better give us half of the road peaceably, or we will force you to do so." This only provoked laughter and jeers, whereupon Baldwin said, "William, rise up and clear the road!" As Lemon's proportions began to assume a perpendicular, the teamsters began to grow uneasy; and as he rose to his feet and began to straighten up, the obstinate fellow shouted, "Hold on! hold on! We have seen enough of you!" And they speedily pulled out and gave the desired room. As they passed, Lemon said, "I wasn't half up when you called to me to sit down." I assume this William is the son of William Lammon of Dorset, Vermont, as the names of the men his is with are names associated with the Lammon family in Dorset.

William's brother, Ezekiel, apparently also moved to Canton for awhile. He signed a deed in Canton involving their mother, Hannah, who is still back in Dorset. The next year Ezekiel sold land he owned in Canton to his mother (I can't tell if she has moved there), and by 1818 he sold this land to someone outside the family. By 1819 Ezekiel is involved in transactions in Genessee County. ,

Here are the inscriptions from the tombstones requested in your letter:

"Mary Jackson Lemmon 1867-1941"

"Wm. Lemmon 1866 - 1925"

"Ernest Lemmon 1900-1901"

These three graves are in consecutive order in the cemetery and I would presume that they are mother, father and child.

" Gilroy Ezra J. Gilroy 1850 - 1932; Minerva R Lemmon his wife 1850 - 1912"

" Campbell, William S 1849 -1932; his wife Jennie L. Lemmon 1849-1910; daughters Jennie M. 1883-1903; M Edith Smail 1881 - 1939"

" Shannon, Hiram Shannon 1880 - 1933; his wife Hannah Lemmon 1857 - 1933; Herbert Shannon 1896-1952; his wife Elizabeth Johnston - 1981; infant children 1931 & 1933; Their son, Leonard J Shannon 1923 - 1984; his wife Ruby I Sheppard 1925 _ "

The first three graves are in Union Cemetery and the last three in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Cemetery. Both cemeteries are in the Village of Spencerville which is located about 12 kilometres ( 8 miles) north of the St. Lawrence River a little to the east of the City of Prescott.

From Merrickville Union Cemetery;

" Robert J. V. Barr 1913 - 1975 Husband of R. Jean Murdock"

"Barr, James H. J. Barr 1884-1965
His Wife Mary J Toothe 1885-1961
Arthur C. 1914-1915
Robert J.V. 1913-1975"

These two graves are side by side and Robert J. V. is inscribed on both his own stone and that of his parents. Merrickville is a small village (1000 people) located on the Rideau River about 45 kms. north of the City of Brockville.

From the South Gower Cemetery;

" Jean Murdock 1928-1986 wife of Robert Barr"

Sorry if this one isn't what you're looking for but the ocfa shows all names appearing on a tombstone and Robert Barr therefore shows in their index despite the fact that his name is only inscribed as being the husband of Jean Murdock.

South Gower is located in the Northeast section of Grenville County somewhat to the east of the Village of Kemptville

I hope this has been of some help to you. Given the time of year don't worry about the fee. Consider it a Christmas present from Canada to Nebraska
