Notes for J
OHN VAN BUSKIRK:
THE VAN BUSKIRKS
By Dale Van Buskirk, and Stella Wells
Rumor states that the first Van Buskirks came to the United States of America and settled in New Amsterdam. Earliest written record which Dr. J. V, Van Buskirk could find was 1664. These records indicated an earlier arrival. Rumor also says that two Van Buskirk brothers built the first brick house in New Amsterdam, using bricks brought over from Holland as ballast in a ship.
The family scattered into New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania, and Virginia. It has been suggested that our branch of the family may have moved to Allen County, Indiana from Logan County, Ohio, and then on to Missouri.
Another rumor I have heard from H. J. Van Buskirk, living here in Calgary is that there were three brothers from Holland who came in the 1600's. Two of them went to Prince Edward Island. They were Empire Loyalists; the other brother stayed in the States. H. J. Van Buskirk was born in New Brunswick; his grandfather was Jacob Van Buskirk. There are a number of these families in Eastern Canada, but if relatives of ours it is not known.
According to Mrs. R. W. Schoemaker, 929 Winding Way, Anderson, Indiana, who is helping compile a volume on the genealogy of the Van Buskirk family from 1654 to 1954: "All the Van Buskirks are descendants of Laurens Andriessen Van Buskirk and his wife Jannetje Jane. In articles for the New Jersey Historical Society the above has been proved beyond a doubt."

The parents of Sarah Jane Van Buskirk Snyder were:
Benjamin Van Buskirk, born October 30, 1815, near Fort Wayne, Indiana;
Died March 14, l873, and buried in the Busby Cemetery Lucerne, Missouri.
Rebecca Bailey Van Buskirk, born March 10, 1822, in Ohio; died November 17,
1881, also buried in Busby Cemetery.
The tombstone of Grandmother Rebecca carries the following verses

Religion filled her soul with peace
Upon a dying bed;
Let faith look up, let sorrow cease.
She lives with Christ o'er head.

Yes, faith upholds her where she sits
An angel clothed in white.
Our lose is her eternal gain;
She dwells in cloudless light.

The father of Benjamin, we think, was William. He was born in Virginia. The family moved to Ohio, adjacent to Indiana before Ohio became a state. They spoke Dutch at home, William had a brother, but that is all we know. There is no record of where he lived, etc. Grandfather Benjamin was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church,, with J. H. Hull, minister, for the 2nd quarter, 1845, and Grandfather was a "licensed exhorter" in the church.

The children of Benjamin and Rebecca Van Buskirk were:
Mary Elizabeth --Born May 15, 1841; married George Maxwell.
Silas --Born June 1842; died before 1857 in Indiana or Ohio.
Louisa Anna --Born January 30, 1845; married John L. Thomas.
William --Born March 15, 1847; died June 79 1857.
Isiah Melville --Born March 7, 1849; married Alice Blackman.
Sarah Jane --Born April 17, 1853; married Daniel Snyder.
Benjamin Franklin --Born February 23, 18571 married Margaret Jane3 Maxwell
Martha Ella --Born October 18, 1866; married John Bowers.

Names of the descendants of these aunts and uncles of Charles Snyder are available,, and some information on their subsequent locations.

Benjamin Franklin Van Buskirk was the father of James Dale, who served as a missionary in Korea and spent his later years in California. Two of Benjamin's daughters lived in Alberta, Canada. Benjamin's first wife, Margaret Jane Maxwell, who had been born near Lucerne on November 3, 1861, died there on February 2, 1901, and is buried in Busby Cemetery.
On October 22, 1904, in South Dakota, Benjamin Franklin Van Buskirk married Mary Eveline Ayers Edmonds, widow of Sanford Edmonds. Aunt Mary was born November 23, 1859, and died January 15, 1932, in Orange, California. She brought into the family two stepsisters and a stepbrother-Elsie, Mabel, and Roscoe. Aunt Mary and Uncle Ben are buried in Fair Haven Cemetery, Orange, California.
