Note_724
Information pertaining to the German origins of the Lotspeich family is to be found in various sources. Friedrich Krebs published a note in German in 1969. This was translated and edited by Don Yoder and published in the book "Rhineland Emigrants" authored by Yoder in 1985. Cerny and Zimmerman published a short note, drawing especially upon the church records, in volume 11 of the monograph series, "Before Germanna."
Johann Willhelm Lotspeich was living in Virginia prior to his father's death in 1778. He appears in a Culpeper deed with his wife Magdalena in 1774. Of special note is the Rev. Klug's estate record (he died in 1764) that mentions his son-in-law, William Lutspike and daughter Magdalena.
The father of William was Johann Conrad Lotspeich who is sometimes called Lotschberg in the Frankenthal (Palatinate) records. Conrad married Catharina Elizabeth Wilhemina, the daughter of Jörg Andreas Ladenberger of Frankenthal. Conrad was a tailor and church deacon at Frankenthal and died there 30 September 1778. His estate papers mention six children of whom three were in America. These were
1. Johann Wilhelm,
2. Johann Christoph,
3. Johanna Friederika.
Christopher was mentioned in the last of the notes here.
In America, only the arrival of Christopher is known. William, born in 1740, came as a young man to Culpeper Co., VA and soon married Magdalena Klug but the details remain unknown. Johanna Friederika, his younger sister by four years, could have come with William or perhaps with Christopher. She is not listed on the ship's manifest with Christopher, but women and children were usually omitted. In Virginia, she married John Francis Lucas Jacoby. Christopher was the youngest child in the family, born in 1750. He arrived at Philadelphia when he was twenty-four years old.
The mother of these children was Catharina Elisabetha Wilhelmina who had a brother Rudolff. He moved to England where he adopted the name Ralph and married twice. But he left no children. He wrote a will in 1784 in which he named as heirs the three children of his deceased sister Susan Dietz of Frankenthal, the son, George Andreas, of his deceased brother Philipp Leonhard Ladenberg, five children of his deceased brother Johannes Ladenberg at Arnemuide near Middleburg in Zeeland, six children of his deceased sister Catherine Lotspeich of Frankenthal, his surviving sister Anna Maria Drislein of Frankenthal and her two children by two husbands.
Ralph himself was described in his as a wine merchant, formerly of Easter Street in the parish of St. Martin in the Fields, now living at Salisbury, Wiltshire. The family has always impressed me for its international flavor. Ralph's will mentions the countries, Palatinate, Holland, England, and the United States. He was the uncle of the three Lotspeichs of America
Note_1083
The one thousand and eighty-third note in a series on the Germanna Colonies
The Lotspeich/Lotspiech family has a very interesting history. Several people joined together to write an article for Beyond Germanna but Robert Lotspeich was the lead in this endeavor. The earliest positively identified member is Johann Conrad Lotspeich of Frankenthal, a village a few miles northwest of Ludwigshafen in the Palatinate. Conrad was a church deacon and a tailor there. He died 30 Sep 1778.
Conrad married Catherina Elisabetha Wilhelmina, the daughter of Jörg Andreas Ladenberger, Brewmaster, and Elisabetha Catherina of Frankenthal. There were nine children of Conrad and Catherina, who were born from 1740 to 1759 (not all lived).
The mother Catherina had a brother, among several siblings, named Rudolff who played an important part in the future of the family. His life was unconventional by the standards of the day and his origins. He moved to London and in 1755 married an English widow who had two children. Later he married a second time. In London he adopted the name Ralph Ladenberg and was a wine merchant. He wrote his will in 1784 after he had retired to Salisbury. He left most of his estate to his six siblings or the children of his siblings if the siblings had already died. Catherina Lotspeich had died so that her six surviving children received her share. Three of the these six children were or had been living in Virginia. How these three came to be living in America is an interesting story and not all parts of it are entirely known.
Not all Lotspeich researchers may agree with the story as I will present it but I believe that the migration of the three children of Conrad and Catherina started with their daughter Johanna Friederika. It appears to me that she was living in London with her uncle Ralph. Then she met a man from Virginia and married him. The man was John Francis Lucas Jacoby and they were married in Parish of Saint Martins in the Fields on 16 Jul 1764. She was, at that time, 20 years old. They returned to Virginia and lived in the Robinson River Valley.
So we have a young woman from Germany who visits her uncle in London and marries there a man from Virginia. This sounds like one of those fanciful tales of our immigrant ancestors. One would probably hesitate to tell this story about your own ancestors because it does not sound probable. But the evidence is quite good. Her origins in Germany are documented. Her uncle's will in London has followed her to America.
What sort of a man was John Francis Lucas Jacoby? We have records in Virginia for him before and after his marriage but they do not tell that much about him personally. Still, we will look at these records. If anyone has ideas about his nationality, please speak up. What does Lucas suggest? What does Jacoby itself suggest?

Notes for Catharina Elizabetha Wilhemina Ladenberger: FROM Family Tree Maker's Genealogy Site: User Hom..: Descendants of Johann Jacob Lotschber http://www.famflytreemaker.com/userstb/r/a/Robert-J-Branham/GENEI-0004.html "In 1784, Ralph Landenberg, a wealthy wine merchant, died at Salisbury, England after a long life in Castle Street, Westminster, in the Parish of Saint Martins in the Fields.Originally from Frankenthal, northwest of Mannheim, Landenberg left 27.16.8 (pounds sterling) to each of the six children of his deceased sister Catharina Elizabetha Wlhemina Lotspeich. In 1795 two of those children, Joanna Frederica Lotspeich Jacoby and John Christopher Lotspeich, recovered their shares in Virginia and in Bourbon County, Kentucky, respectively.Their brother, Johann Wilhelm Lotspeich, son of the tailor Johann Conrad Lotspeich and Catharina Landenberg, had arrived in Virginia from Philadelphia in 1772, apparently bringing his brother and sister. His sister married a late arrival in Virginia, Lucas Jacoby, who had come to Virginia with his father, John Daniel Jacoby, in about 1760.The father of the Lotspeichs died in 1778.Despite Frankenthal's advantageous location on a major trade route through which many German-American agents regularly passed, no recovery attempt had been made.Instead, only the connection to their wealthy uncle in London secured the property." ---From 'Palatines, Liberty, and Property', German Lutherans in Colonial British America by A. G. Roeber. (c) The John Hopkins University Press, Baltimore and London. || http://www.germanna.net/1c.htm#Note_113 Note_113 When one starts scratching beneath the surface, there were many German families in the area that was pioneered by the original settlers in the Virginia Piedmont. From the beginning I have taken the view that all of these were to be counted as Germanna people even though many of them did not come to the area until close to the time of the Revolution. The enumeration of these people continues. One family that should not be counted is John Langenbuehl and his wife Barbara. The idea that there was such an individual was put forth by B. C. Holtzclaw in the Germanna Records, in Number Six to be exact. This was a mistake resulting from the difficulty of reading the German script in the church records. The name Langenbuehl is really, in the modern spelling, Blankenbaker. The German script for the capital letter "B" looks much like our modern script letter "L". This is a warning to us as we trace individuals; spelling and penmanship may confuse us. The Lotspeich family is truly an international family and I never cease to marvel that the pieces were ever put together. Three children of Conrad Lotspeich and Catharina Elisabetha Ladenberger, born at Frankenthal in the Palatinate, were immigrants to America. They were Johann Wilhelm, born 1740, Johanna Friederika, born 1744, and Johann Christoph, born 1750. There were three other children but the named three came to Virginia where Friederika married John Francis Lucas Jacoby, and William Lotspeich married Magdalena Klug, the daughter of Rev. Klug. J.C. Lotspeich's wife's given name was Rebecca Barbara according to Don McNeil. Their mother's brother was a merchant in London who left his estate to his sister's children. This will was the essential link in tying the family together... || |

Notes for Johanna Frederica Lotschberg: Note_1087 The one thousand and eighty-seventh note in a series on the Germanna Colonies Fred Westcott added more information about the Jacoby family and, in order that it form a part of the Jacoby sequence here, I am restating the information that he supplied with the addition of a little more from other sources. John Francis Lucas Jacobi and his wife Johanna Friederika Lotspeich were married in 1764 in London. They moved back to Virginia. In 1784 and 1786 they sold their land in Culpeper Co., Virginia, and moved to Bourbon Co., Kentucky. Francis Jacoby died there in 1788 leaving a will. It mentions his wife Frederica, three daughters, Katrina, Elizabeth Butler, and Susannah, and sons, Frank, Ralph Gladingsberg, Frederick, Henry, John V., Adam, Jacob, and Daniel. Thus, the twenty-four years of marriage produced at least eleven children according to the will. The will was witnessed by John Grant, William Butler (perhaps a son-in-law), and Catherine Butler (relationship unknown). Executors were to be Fredericka, John Grant, and William Butler. The will itself is filed in Will Book A, p.7. Then in 1798, again in Bourbon Co., Henry Jacoby made a will. He names the heirs of his brother Francis (probably this is the Frank above). Henry also mentions his parents (?) and an Adam. Henry does not seem to have a wife so leaving his estate to his brothers and sisters would be logical. Adam would have been his brother. William Butler appears again as a witness along with John Burns and Elizabeth Watts. (Watts is a good Culpeper name.) This will is filed in Will Book B, p.118. The article on the Lotspeich family in Beyond Germanna gives the children of Francis Lucas Jacoby and Friederika Lotspeich as: Katrina (m. William Butler), Susannah (m. Benjamin Hallock), Ralph Ladenberg (drowned in the Mississippi River), Francis (m. ___ Plunkett), Henry (drowned), Daniel (m. Nancy Rutledge), Elizabeth, Frederick, (m. Nancy Bivins, was killed by Indians), Jacob (m. Polly Stark), Rachel (m. Joseph Hibler), John (m. Jane Stark), Adam (b. 1783 and died young). A comparison to the will shows that Rachel was not in the will. The name Ralph Gladingsberg in the will is a mistake as he was named for his uncle who used the name Ralph Ladenberg in London. Fred Westcott also asked about the name Lucas in Culpeper Co. I see a Francis Lucas and a William Lucas in the 1781 Culpeper Classes, number 55. The only German names here that I recognize are James Wilhoit and perhaps Daniel Deel (Diehl). The same two Lucas names plus another Francis are in the 1787 Culpeper tax list. |

I have not seen this proposed before, but your Thomas seems a likely father for Hezikiah Tolbert b.ca 1773, Montgomery Co, NC, d.1861 Pike Co, AL, m. Catherine Bass.
Issue: Joel, Hezekiah Jr, Edmund, Rachael, Nancy Sarah, Benjamin.
As far as I know Hezikiah is still looking for a home.
Any opinions pro or con would be welcome.
