CUTTING This is one of the English families which came to America in the period following the Puritan emigration, but must nevertheless be credited with enterprise and energy. The conditions prevailing at the time of the Pilgrims must seem appalling even to the stoutest hearts, and one can readily see that it requires much enterprise at any time for one to cross three thousand miles of ocean, leaving behind friends and ties of every association, to make a beginning in a new world.

(I) Richard Cutting, immigrant ancestor of this line, was admitted freeman April 18, 1690, in Watertown, Massachusetts, where he settled about 1640. He was a wheelwright by occupation. He died March 21, 1696, "an aged man". His wife Sarah died November 4, 1685, aged sixty years. In his will, dated June 24, 1694, are named sons Zachariah and James, and daughter Susan Newcomb and Lydia Spring. His son John and his daughter Sarah, wife of John Barnard, died before the date of the will.

(II) Zachariah, son of Richard Cutting, was born about 1645, in Watertown, and lived there many years. He sold land there in 1709, which indicates that he moved from the town, and no record of his death is found. The name of his wife was Sarah (???).

(III) Zachariah (2), son of Zachariah (1) Cutting, was born about 1670, in Watertown, and probably passed his life there. The name of his first wife is not on record. He married (second). May 5, 1701, Elizabeth Wellington, born April 27, 1685, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Strait) Wellington, of Watertown. His first wife was the mother of Jonas, Sarah (died young), and Lydia; the second wife, of Elizabeth, Susannah and Sarah.

(IV) Jonas, son of Zachariah (2) Cutting, was born about 1695, and lived in Watertown until about 1734, when he removed to Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. He married, March 6, 1720, Dinah Smith, born January 24, 1695, daughter of Jonathan and Jane (Peabody) Smith, of Watertown. Children: Jonas; Zachariah; James; Lydia; Francis, mentioned below; Dinah; Salmon; Eliphalet.

(V) Francis, son of Jonas Cutting, was born September 24, 1728, in Watertown, and lived in Shrewsbury for a time. He was a soldier in the revolution, and served in the siege of Boston in 1775, and at Rutland, Massachusetts. in 1779, guarding prisoners. After living in Shrewsbury he lived in Worcester and vicinity. He married, May 11, 1750, Thankful Warren, born May 29, 1730, in Weston, Massachusetts, daughter of Jonathan and Sarah (Whitney) Warren. Children, born in Worcester: James, October 20, 1754; James, May 1, 1756; Francis, November 20, 1758; Benjamin, baptized August 26, 1760; Susannah, born October 5, 1762; John, March 12, 1765; Benjamin, August 19, 1766; David and Jonathan, August 19, 1768; Reuben, September 16, 1771.

(VII) Francis Cutting, doubtless a grandson of Francis, and son probably of Francis Jr., was born in the vicinity of Croydon or Claremont, New Hampshire, about 1790 (not shown in New Hampshire records). He married, May 4, 1817, in Croydon, Keziah Hudson. Benjamin Cutting, a son of Francis (V), settled in Croydon and served in the revolution. His son Francis, born at Croydon, lived there all his life and left children: Irena, Alfred, Freeman, Elon, Francis M., Shepherd H., Philinda, Diantha S. and Addison. Francis was register of deeds of Sullivan county. New Hampshire.

(VIII) Charles Albert, son of Francis Cutting, was born in Claremont, New Hampshire, in 1818, and died in 1897. He was educated at Highgate Springs. Vermont, and later kept a hotel at St. Albans, same state. Thence he removed to Minnesota and kept a hotel at Hastings. Following this he was in the same business at Salem. Oregon. Going to Tama City and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he was there a hotel keeper, and later moved to Palatine, Illinois, where he died. He married Laura Elizabeth Averill, daughter of John Averill, a Quaker and member of Vermont legislature. She was born in 1818 at Highgate Springs, and died in Chicago in 1901. Child, Charles Sidney, mentioned below.

(IX) Hon. Charles Sidney, son of Charles Albert Cutting, was born at Highgate, Franklin county, Vermont, March 1, 1854. He attended the public schools and Willamette University at Salem, Oregon. In 1907 the University of Michigan conferred on him the degree of LL.D. He began his career as a newspaper man, as assistant editor of the Cedar Rapids Times in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Afterward he was for a time in educational work and for six years was principal of the high school at Palatine, Cook county, Illinois. In 1874 he went to Chicago, and in 1877 began to study law in the office and under the instruction of Judge Joshua C. Knickerbocker. He was admitted to the bar of Illinois, January 8, 1879, and began to practice law in Chicago. From 1887 to 1890 he was master in chancery of the circuit court of Cook county, Illinois. For one year he was attorney for the town of Cicero, Illinois. For many years he was a partner in the firm of Cutting, Castle & Williams. Since 1900 he has been judge of the probate court of Cook county, having been four times re-elected to this office. In politics he is a Republican. For nine years he was a member of the board of education of Cook county and for three years its president. He was also for three years a member and president of the board of education of Palatine, Illinois, while living in that town. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Illinois Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association, the Union League Club, of which he was formerly president, the Hamilton Club, the City Club, the Law Club, the Chicago Literary Club, the Oaks Club of Austin, Illinois, the Twentieth Century Club, the Westward Ho! Club, and the New England Society of Chicago. In religion he is nonsectarian and liberal. He married, June 27, 1876, Annie Elizabeth, born in Cook county, Illinois, July 17, 1854, daughter of Myron H. and Ann L. (Bradwell) Lytle. They have one child, Robert Myron, mentioned below.

CUTTING ANCESTRY

CAPTAIN JOHN CUTTING of Watertown, Mass., 1636; afterwards at Charlestown, thence removed to Newbury, Mass., about 1642, had Sarah, who married James Brown and Mary who married Nov. 9, 1657, Samuel Novely. He made 13 voyages and brought many, very many, passengers from England. He died Nov. 29, 1650; his widow Mary, married (second) John Miller, and she died March 6, 1667. Also had son John Cutting of Boston, 1665. Sarah b. 1625, d. Nov. 4, 1685.

WILLIAM CUTTING, a passenger on the "Elizabeth" from Ipswich, England, 1634, aged 26. It may be asked if he were related to Richard who came in the same ship with him, or to Capt. John who was Master of the "Francis" which sailed on the same day, from the same port, and both reached Boston, Mass., the same day, without loss of any passengers. Yet where the asnwer will come from or what it will be, is beyond conjecture.

RICHARD CUTTING, born in England in 1623. When only eleven years of age, Richard Cutting set sail in the ship "Elizabeth," which left Ipswich, England, in 1634, and upon his arrival in Boston harbor he remained in that town for some time, but subsequently settled in Waltham, Massachusetts, where he was admitted a freeman in 1690, and died in 1696 at the age of seventy-three years. Died March 21, 1695/6. He was a wheelwright at Watertown.

NOTE: If he was 11 yrs. old when he came in 1634, as given in Shipping list of the "Elizabeth," he was born in 1623 and died 1695/6; he was about 73 years of age when he died (A. M. C. R.).

His will dated June 24, 1694, mentions sons Zachariah and James, daughters Susan, Nucom (Newcombe) and Lydia Spring; grand-children, John Cutting and Elizabeth Barnard. Inventory 185œ, 17 shillings. The births of only three of his children are recorded."

CHILDREN OF RICHARD AND SARAH CUTTING
See "Ancestry of Seth Cutting" by Anna M. Chandler Reilly.

1. ZACHARIAH (this name on all the records is spelled with a J instead of a Z). He was mentioned in his father's will, but in all the genealogies examined of this family, Zachariah, son of Richard and Sarah, is either passed by, or just the mention of his name, or else dropped out entirely making Zachariah, Jr., a son instead of grandson of Richard, but we find in Middlesex County Probate Records; Docket 3882; his will dated March 5, 1730, Probated Sept. 11, 1732, from which we find the names of his children and other items (A. M. C. R.).

2. JAMES, b. Jan. 26, 1647/8; m. June 15, 1679, Hannah Cutter. Settled in Troy, N. H.

3. JOHN, b. (???), d. before his father; m. Feb. 9, 1671, Susan Arrington. Their eldest son John was mentioned in Richard Cutting's will as one of the grand-children. (See Middlesex Records, Vol. 1, p. 253).

4. SUSANNA, b. (???); m. June 26, 1672, Peter Nucum (Newcombe).

5. SARAH, b. Sept. 2, 1661; m. March 5, 1682, John Barnard. She d. before her father, leaving a daughter Elizabeth Barnard, mentioned in his will.

6. LYDIA, b. Sept. 1, 1666; m. abt. 1685, Henry Spring, Jr.

7. RICHARD. (Found this name in Vol. I, p. 253, Middlesex Records and also found date of his death, Jan. 28, 1678, and no mention of him elsewhere. This record stated that he was son of Richard and Sarah. It also gave the name Zachariah, son of Richard and Sarah. Bond's History of Watertown, Mass., stated that only the names of three children of Richard and Sarah were recorded (A. M. C. R.).
