Jonas Humphreys was b. in Wendover, Bucks Co., England; he d. in Dorchester, Mass., 19 March, 1662; his will, dated 12 March, 1662, mentions "daughter Susanna, wife of NICHOLAS WHITE."

John Humphreys, Assistant of the Colony of Massachusetts Bay, and later its first Major-General, m. Susan, daughter of Thomas Clinton, 3d Earl of Lincoln, "seems to have been formerly from 'about Dorchester,' 120 miles distant from London. He d. before June 25, 1661."

JONAS, Dorchester 1634, tanner, whose pits were employ. by six generat. of most worthy descend.; was from Wendover, Co. Bucks, where he was, it is said, the constable, came with ch. James, Jonas, and prob. Elizabeth and Susanna, perhaps with w. Frances, whose d. Sarah was bur. here Sept. 1638. For sec. w. he had Jane, wid. of George Weeks, wh. d. 2 Aug. 1668. He d. 19 Mar. 1662. His will of 12 Mar. pro. 17 Apr. of that yr. in Vol. I. 381, names only w. s. Jonas, gr.-ch. Elizabeth Foy and d. Susanna, w. of Nicholas White.

Abstracts of Early Wills

JONAS HUMFREY, [of Dorchester.] Will. --- March 12: 1661-62. --- Being weake in body by reason of old age & other infirmities, but of perfect vnderstanding & memory. To my wife, all yt Goods, that is now in being, which she brought with her. Alsoe, a third pt of that foure Ackers of Land, yt lyeth in the great lots, & a third pt of seuen Ackers & a halfe in the 20 Acker lots, and a third pt of two Ackers at the 8 Acker lots, during her life. After her decease, all those parcels of Land to returne to my son, James Humfrey. Alsoe, I giue my wife one Cow, on new Chest, on Blanket, one paier of Sheetes, & half ye hempe. I giue my son Jonas Humfrey, on bed, on Coverled, & on flocke Bolster. Alsoe my Cloake, and my gray coate. To my Grandchild, Elizabeth Frie, 4pounds and ye Chest that was her grandmothers. To my dau. Susanna White, wife to Nicholas White, 10s. All the rest of my Estate, both Land & goods, to my son, James Humfrey, whom I make my whole Executor. Jonas Humfrey.

[The above abstract of the Will of Jonas Humfrey, was made from a copy, evidently in the hand-writing of Elder James Humfrey, who was the oldest son of Jonas, and, as will be seen, his executor. This copy is in possession of the family at Dorchester, and is doubtless a correct transcript of the original. There are many errors in the Will, as recorded, in Suffolk Probate Records, Vol. I. p. 382.

Jonas Humfrey was a Constable in Wendover, Co. Bucks, Eng. He brought to this country a curious copy of Instructions and queries in twelve articles. To these squestions he was required to give answeres in writing, after having faithfully fulfilled the duties incumbent on him as an officer of that borough. Thhis paper is extant.]
