MY BRADSHAW LINEAGE
By Randall Scott Treadway

"Richard Lowther at the age of 22 became the sole heir to his grandfather Sir John Lowther's estate. In 1560 he was appointed Deputy to Lord Henry Scrope, Warden on the British side of the border of England and Scotland. His principle duty of Deputy Warden was to lead raids into the Scottish territory. Richard was Knighted in 1565 and was given the post of Sheriff of Cumberland. Richard took Mary Queen of Scots into custody on 17 May 1568, at the home of Henry Fletcher, accompanied by 400 men. Sometime later Richard's sympathy fell toward Mary Queen of Scots. Richard was confined to the Towers of London on two separate occasions from 1570 through 1573, due to aiding in a small part to place Mary Queen of Scots in the throne of Queen Elizabeth."

LONSDALE, EARLS OF. This English carldorn is held by the ancient family of Lowther, which traces its descent to Sir Hugh Lowther, who flourished in the reign of Edward I. Sir Hugh’s descendant Sir Richard Lowther (1529—16o7) received Mary queen of Scots on her flight into England in 1568, and in the two following years ~ias concerned with his brother Gerard in attempts to release her from captivity. He was sheriff of Cumberland and lord warden of the west marches. A house built by Gerard Lowther at Penrith is now the “Two Lions Inn.” Sir Richard’s eldest son, Sir Christopher Lowther (d. f617), was the ancestor of the later Lowthers, and another son, Sir Gerard Lowther (d. 1624), was judge of the common pleas in Ireland.

One of Sir Christopher’s descendants was Sir John Lowther, Bart. (d. 1706), the founder of the trade of Whitehaven, and

another was John ‘Lowther (1655—I 700), who was created Viscount Lonsdale in 1696. Before’ this creation John had succeeded his grandfather, another Sir John Lowther (d. 1675), as a baronet, and had been member of parliament for Westmorland from 1675 to 1696. In 1688 he was serviceable in securing Cumberland and Westmorland for William of Orange; in 1690 he was first lord of the treasury, and he was lord privy seal from March 1699 until his death in July 1700. Lonsdale wrote Memoirs of the Re-ign of James II., which were printed in 1808 and again in 1857. His family became extinct when his son’~ Henry, the 3rd viscount (1694—175 I), died unmarried in March’

1751.

James Lowther, 1st earl of Lonsdale (1736—1802), was a son of Robert Lowther (d. 1745) of Maulds Meaburn, Westmorland., who was for some time governor of Barbados, and was descended from Sir Christopher Lowtber; through his mother Catherine Pennington, James was a great-grandson of the 1St viscount Lonsdale. He inherited one of the family baronetcies in 1751; and from three sources he obtained immense wealth, ‘being the, heir of the 3rd viscount Lonsdalc, of Sir James Lowther, Bart.

(d. 1755) of Whitehaven, and of Sir William Lowther, Bart. (d. 1756). From 1757 to 1784 he was a member of parliament, exercising enormous influence on elections in the north of England and usually controlling nine seats in the House of Commons,. where his nominees were known as “Sir James’s ninepins.” He secured the election of William Pitt as member ‘for his borough of Appleby in 1781, and his dispute with the 3rd duke of Portland over the possession of the socage manor’of Carlisle. and the forest of Inglewood gave rise to lengthy proceedings, both in parliament and in the law courts. In. 1784 Lowther was created earl of Lonsdale and in 1797 Viscount Lowther with an extended remainder. The earl’s enormous wealth enabled him to gratify his political ambitions. Sir N. W. Wraxall (Historical and Posthumous Memoirs, ed. H.B. Wheatley, 1884), who gives interesting glimpses of his life, speaks of his “prodigious property” and quotes Junius, who called him “the little contemptible tyrant of the north.” He wasknown as the “bad earl,” and Horace Walpole and others speak slightingly of him; he was, however, a benefactor to Whitehaven, where he boasted he owned the “land, fire and water.”

He married Mary (1768—1824) daughter of George III.’s favourite, John Stuart, 3rd earl of Bute, but died childless on the 24th of May 1802, when the earldom became extinct; but a kinsman, Sir William Lowther, Bart. (1757—1844), of Swillington, became 2nd viscount Lowther. This viscount, who was ‘created earl of Lonsdale in 1807, is chiefly famous as the friend of, Wordsworth and the builder of Lowther Castle, Penrith. His son, William Lowther, 3rd earl of Lonsdale (1787—1872), held several subordinate positions in various Tory ministries, and was lord president of the council in 1852. He died unmarried, and was succeeded by his nephew Henry (1818—1876), whose son Hugh Cecil (b. 1857) succeeded his brother as 6th earl of Lonsdale in 1882.

Other prominent members of the Lowther family are the Right Hon. James William Lowther (b. 1855), who became speaker of the House of Commons in 1905; Sir Gerard Augustus Lowtber (b. 1858), who became British ambassador at Constantinople in 1908; and the Right Hon. James Lowther (1840—1904), who was a well-known Conservative member of parliament from 1865 onwards, and chief secretary for Ireland from 1878 to 1880.,

Solving Genealogical Jigsaw Puzzles By Jay H. ozyoates@hotmail.com

I have been trying to identify a John MIDDLETON of Middleton Hall but found there are 21 towns called "Middleton" in the A-Z Atlas of Great Britain. All the information I had was: Sir Richard LOWTHER, b. 1532
Lowther Hall d.1607, m. Frances MIDDLETON Middleton (daughter of John MIDDLETON, d. 15/2/1579, [son of Geoffrey of Middleton and Margaret KIRKHAM], and Ann TUNSTALL, [daughter of Brian TUNSTALL of Thurland Castle, Lancashire d. 9/9/1513 at Battle of Flodden and Isabel BOYNTON b. ca 1484 Ackham, Yorkshire]. Brian TUNSTALL was the son of Thomas and his wife Ann NEVILLE.)

Determined not to give up, I scoured the Net, not just for genealogies, but for references to any of the above information, and gleaned these separate nuggets:

* 1314 -- The Manor of Beetham was held by a family of its own name, one of whom is Thomas de Betham, who was several times knight of the shire for Westmorland, and who died in 1314. It was afterwards carried in marriage to the Middletons, the last of whom on record is Sir George Middleton, who was knighted by Charles I.

* Anne Betham m. 1483-5 Sir Robert Middleton of Leighton Hall [son of Sir Geoffrey who was a younger son of John Middleton of Middleton Hall]. The Leighton Hall line terminated with Sir George, who was knighted by Charles I.

* Patronage of the Chantry Chapel of St Marys, founded by the Crofts in 15th century came to the Middleton family along with Leighton Hall, by the marriage of Alyson Croft with Geoffrey Middleton in 1438.

* In 1489, Sir Robert Middleton was assigned Yealand Conyers with Leighton after his father's marriage into the family of the then owners, the Crofts. Thenceforth these manors descended through the Middletons.

* MIDDLETON township and chapelry is bounded on the west by the river Lune, on the north west by the Rother, which divides it from Yorkshire, and here falls into the Lune, and on the south by the township of
Barbon. It contains a number of detached houses, and the small hamlet of Middleton Head, seven miles N. by E. of Kirkby-Lonsdale, and three and a half miles S.W. of Sedbergh.

The manor was held by a family of its own name for 10 generations, one of whom, John Middleton, Esq., enfranchised the tenants in the reign of James I (1603-1625), so that it is now held of the Earl of Lonsdale, as lessee of the great Barony of Kendal, by the payment of a small quit-rent. Middleton Hall, once the residence of the Middletons, was a large castellated building. The portion of it still habitable is occupied by a farmer.

* 1640-50 -- The tenants of the Lancashire Royalist Sir George Middleton took advantage of the Revolution of the 1640s-50s and in particular of his absence and the sequestration of his estates, to overthrow his authority.

The Middletons' estates were centred on the parish of Warton on the northern border of Lancashire. In Warton the Middletons held the manors of Yealand Redmayne, Yealand Conyers and Yealand Storrs, and Leighton where they lived. They also had lands in Silverdale and Lindeth. Bordering on the parish were their manors of Over Kellett (on the southeastern side), and Burton, just over the county border in Westmorland. They also had miscellaneous parcels of land scattered throughout Lancashire and
Westmorland.

>From the above I can ascertain with reasonable certainty that my John is from the Westmorland family. The information isn't yet completely proven, but each piece fits together like a jigsaw puzzle and every
future clue adds to the picture. Sure, some may seem to fit but prove false, but half the fun is in the search, and every little fact about them is a bonus.

Yes, please, Nick, I am very interested to see what info the book has on Tunstall and Middleton, with special interest in the Middletons. I'm intrigued to see just how often the same family names keep cropping up among these Northern families, including also Strickland, Stapelton, Curwen and Musgrave. My ancestry enters these families through:

Sir Richard LOWTHER b.1532 Lowther Hall d.1607 = Frances MIDDLETON bc.1533 Middleton (dau of John MIDDLETON bc.1506 d.15/2/1579, [son of Geoffrey of Middleton bc1480 and Margaret KIRKHAM], and his wife Ann TUNSTALL, [dau of Brian TUNSTALL of Thurland Castle, Lancashire d.9/9/1513 at Battle of Flodden and Isabel Boynton bc. 1484 Ackham, Yorkshire]. Brian Tunstall was the son of Thomas and his wife Ann NEVILLE). Ann Neville was the illegitimate daughter of George Neville, who was Archbishop of York and brother of Richard Neville, "The Kingmaker".\\

If you want me to send this information can I have your home address if you don't want to post it over the net my phone number is 01204 888562 and I live in England.

The family tree I have with regards the Tunstalls of Thurland Castle agrees with you on most points however Sir Thomas married Alice Nevill daughter of George Archbishop of Ebor (York) George was the great great grandson of King Edward III who reigned 1328-1377.
Sir Brian Tunstall was known as the Stainless Knight after he was killed at Flodden 1513.
Sir Walter Scott describes him

(The good Lord Marmion, by my life
Welcome to danger's hour!
Short greetings serves in time of strife-
Thus have I ranged my power:
Myself will rule this central host,
stout Stanley fronts their right,
my sons command the vaward post,
with Brain Tunstall, stainless Knight)

The following web site is of use with regards the Sticklands of Sizergh
www.sizergh.demon.co.uk/sizergh/f_tree.gif

or just use search engine upon the Stricklands of Sizergh

In circa 1480 one John Preston of Lower Levens hall married Elizabeth Redman of upper Levens Hall, Westmorland these are my 13 times great grandparents. Elizabeth's parents were Sir Richard Redman and Margaret the daughter of Sir Thomas Middleton of Middleton Hall, her mother was a Musgrave who through a long line of De Ferrers, Earls of Derby, she could claim a clear decent from King Henry I (youngest son of William the Conqueror). see page 92, The Redmans of Levens and Harewood.

hope you find this of interest, regards, Nick

Frances Middleton's husband, Sir Richard Lowther was the son of Dorothy Clifford whose antecedents include many of the major players of the Wars of the Roses and before, all of whom tied themselves to Plantagenets via different marriages. I feel sorry for the daughters who were pawns of their father's political ambitions, but it makes history rather fun, and personal, to read! It also makes touring castles etc a fascinating walk into my own past. Lucky you, living so near to so much. For me a long journey half a world away, literally. I'll email you my address.

The name Featherston/Featherstone originated in England in Northumberland near the Scottish border around the early 1200s. Helias Featherstonehaugh is our earliest known ancestor, and he established upright stones, some say three uprights with a stone across the top, hence the name Feuderstone at which the people of the manor gathered to conduct their business. Later the Featherstone Castle was built in the valley or haugh below, thus the name Featherstonehaugh. Featherstone Castle still stands in its original location and still has part of the original castle. It went out of the Featherstone family in the 1700s, I think. It is privately owned now and is operated as a youth hostel for groups. You can learn more of the history from the Featherstone Society website and see pictures of the castle.
