...The will of John Harris, another resident of Saint Stephen's Parish, No rthumberland County, dated 20 September, 1718, mentions a legacy left by h is uncle William Harris "of Hayne in parish of Stowford in County of Devon "; the Harrises were described as an old and prominent Devonshire famil y, mentioned in Burk's Extinct Baronetage and Commoners. (Virginia Magazi ne of History and Biography, 20 (July, 1912), 294.) J. Hall Pleasants, "T he Lovelace Family and Its Connections," Virginia Magazine of History a nd Biography, 28 (1920), 176, notes that Sir William Lovelace was a memb er of the Virginia Company and an incorporator of the second Virginia Char ter, 1609. His eldest son was Richard Lovelace the poet; his third daught er, Elizabeth, married (about 1650) Daniel Hayne (b. 1627), of Kintbury Ea ton, Berks., son of Thomas Hayne of Auborne, Wilts. (p. 186)

Rebecca, in a previous message, posed the question of who was Johanna Perc y's father. I have recently been looking over the records to determine t he source of the problem, and I have come to the conclusion that the re al question should be, who was Arthur Harris? The records of the Percie s, perhaps the greatest family of the north of England, are very full, a nd all agree that Johanna Percy, daughter of the Sir Thomas Percy who w as executed for his part in the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1537 (and perhaps a lso because the Percies actually had a better claim to the throne than Hen ry VII) and who married Eleanor, daughter and coheir of Sir Guiscard Harbo ttle of Beamish, County Durham, married an Arthur Harris of Prittlewell, E ssex, Esquire, and it hardly seems that this can be questioned. The probl em is, as she points out, that this Arthur Harris cannot be the fath er of William Harris of Southminster in Essex, who was approximately a con temporary of Sir Thomas Percy. The source of the confusion lies in the Vis itations of Essex of 1558 and 1614 (Metcalfe's edition, p. 59, does not ma ke it clear which visitation gives the information that "Joane, daught er to Sir Thomas Percy, Knt." who is identified as the daughter of "Thom as Percy Kt., 2e son to Henry Earl of Northumberland" and "Elianor, daught er and coheir to Sir Richard" (SIC for Guiscard) "Harbottell", married "Ar thur Harris of Prickwell in Sussex" (SIC for Prittlewell in Essex), w ho is shown as the father of William Harris of Southminster). Clearly t he Herald who took this pedigree was not at his best that day. An obvio us suggestion, so far as the chronology goes, would be to refer this Arth ur Harris to Arthur Harris, son of William Harris and Joanne Cooke, but t he same visitation refers to him as "of Woodham Mortimer in Essex" and sho ws him as the husband of Dorothy, daughter of Sir William Wal(de)grave, a nd it is hard to see how one can get around this statement. I am looking f urther into the histories of the families who married into the Harrises (a nd who are not all that grand until the generation AFTER this William Harr is of Southminster, who married twice to women whose fathers' names were n ot even known, and once to a daughter of the rich parvenu "Customer" Smit h, which is not what one might expect for the son of a Percy), who were, a fter all, nouveaux riches (William Harris' pedigree does not go beyond h is grandfather, as opposed to, say, the Barringtons of Hatfield, from wh om came William's son Edward's wife--the Herald got her father's name wron g, too--, who go back six, and who had ancestors who take it back some eig ht or more generations). The net result is that, even if one is incline d, as I am, to accept Ott's suggestion that Capt. Thomas Harris was the s on of Edward of Southminster and Elizabeth Barrington, Capt. Harris was al most certainly NOT descended from the Percies, but that John Harri s, if he is in fact the son of Sir William Harris of Cricksea (which is mo re a matter of faith than of reason), may be, but it is not terribly likel y. The truth of the matter is that the ancestry of both of the two early V irginia Harrises remains basically unproven, and that a connection with t he Harrises of Essex depends on certain presumptions of status (Captain Th omas' military rank, his son's godfather being the brother of the Marque ss of Winchester, and John Harris' dealings with the Virginia Company a nd the fact that he was once called "gentleman" in a London Parish Regist er (and who was there to say him nay?)--can anyone add any others?) that a re not necessarily conclusive.
