Notes for Evelyn Minerva Berg:
BIO:Obert Knutson was born east of Lake Park, MN but grew up and
attended school in District 16 in Eglon Township. He married Evelyn
Berg, who was born and raised south of Hawley in Skree Township,
one of the 10 children of Oscar and Hannah Berg.
Over the years, Obert gained the reputation of being a first
rate mechanic in the Hawley and Lake Park areas. He really knew
Ford cars and could fix any of them.He worked at Burns Motor in
Hawley for about 15 years. He also worked for 2 years at the
Willow Run, Michigan plant. He operated the Mobil Station on
Highway 10 near Lake Park, and later built and operated his own
garage near the Hilltop on Highway 10.
Obert could always be seen with a short stubby cigar in his
mouth. Most of the time it wasn't lit, too dangerous around cars,
he said.In the 1947 Lake Park Journal, Ed Struble reported that
thieves broke into Obert's station. They took 14 cartons of
cigarettes, but left 1 box of cigars for Obert's "puff" or "chew".
We wonder could it be that the thieves knew Obert and his smoking
habit?
His pride and joy was his 1926 Model T Ford, "built from
scratch", from parts he gathered. It was kept so polished you
could see yourself in it.
Evelyn worked at her brother-in-law's restaurant in Hawley,
rolled lefse at Art Carlson's Lefse Factory in Lake Park, and
later was employed at Swift's in Detroit Lakes, MN.
