Notes for Ephraim Charles Reed:
The following information was furnished by Blanche Coleman, and also a letter written to Blanche by Charlotte Reed Martin, Three Rivers, Michigan, April 2, 1968:

Ephraim Reed was born in Maine, March 16, 1809. He was a ship's captain and took a ship around the horn, and nearly lost his ship in a storm. Anna Eliza Fitz-Randolph Reed was a school teacher. George, one of their sons taught violin lessons to the men in the logging camps, walking from camp to camp. The other sons also worked in the logging camps. Oscar, Royal, and Charles later worked in the mills and farmed. While they lived in Erie, Pennsylvania, the boys during their teens, worked as "hostlers" caring for horses and carriages of wealthy families. Ephraim was home from the sea on leave, became ill with pneumonia and died. He and Anna are buried on a farm about 7 1/2 miles west of Reed City, Osceola County, Michigan. The farm is owned by a descendent.

In 1850, Ephraim was a farmer living in Cusservago Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. It is believed that the family lived in Erie, Pennsylvania in the mid 1850's. There is a picture of Ephraim, Anna, and Sally that was taken in Erie, Pennsylvania. Sally had died prior to 1860. In 1860, he was a farmer and living in West Almond, Allegany County, New York. His Real Estate was valued at $300 and his Personal Property at $150. In 1870, he was living in the City of Erie, Pennsylvania, his estate was valued at $500 and his occupation was a Common Laborer, Oscar and Royal William, worked in a livery stable, and Charles worked in a brick yard. In 1880, Ephraim, Anna, Oscar, Charles, Royal, and Elemander (George), were living in Lincoln Township, Osceola County, Michigan. Ephraim's age was shown as 76 years old, and that his father was born in Massachusetts, and his mother in Maine.
