Notes for Edward NASH:
Some descendants give his name as Miles (Myles) Edward Nash. This tradition is found among the John Walker Nash descendants. In a letter to Dr. F.S. Nash, James Hemery Nash states that Edward Nash was born "on the James River below Richmond."
Three traditions as to the origin of Edward Nash have been passed down through his descendants. One states that he and Lucinda Bell were married in Wales, and that they and their one son, John Walker Nash, came to America and settled in South Carolina. This view was published in the Gwinnett County History, Volume II, as submitted by T.L. Veal. Another view, recorded in an unpublished paper written by Frances Elizabeth Nash Lively, says that Edward descended from a prominent Virginia family of Welsh origin, that he fought as a patriot in the Revolutionary War and received a land grant from Congress in South Carolina. The third view, from the descendants of William Pinckney Hamilton Nash, states that Edward came from Glasgow, Scotland, and settled in Fairfax County, Virginia, near the home of George Washington. None of these traditions have been documented.
Both James Hemery Nash and Edward Walker Nash stated that their grandfather Nash was a Revolutionary soldier. Family records offer few clues as to his Revolutionary War service. North Carolina records indicate that an Edward Nash served in that state's Militia. However, an Edward Nash served in the British army along with a brother , John, and these men had a mother named Elizabeth. Was Edward a Tory or a patriot? It is conceivable that he served both in the North Carolina Militia and as a loyalist soldier as well. Many did. We simply do not know.
Sara Mary Nash states that by 1777,Edward had acquired land in Caswell County, North Carolina. There were several children in the family by the time they migrated to Laurens District, South Carolina. About 1806, theymoved several miles up and across Rabun Creek into Greenville District, to the place known as "Nash's Mill," where Edward Nash operated grist and saw mills, shops and a farm.

41.Ann UNKNOWN, born February 09, 17747; died May 02, 1856 in Floyd County, Georgia.
Notes for Joseph COUEY:
Arrived with his parents in Charlestown, South Carolina on 31 August 1767. Listed in the 1790 Census of Abbeville District, South Carolina, living near his father William, and his two brothers John and William. Listed in Nora Davis' AN HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE LONG CANE ASSOCIATE REFORMED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH as being a member of that congregation in 1797. This congregation was founded by a portion of a group that left from Ballybay, County Monaghan, Northern Ireland with Dr.Thomas Clark in 1764. The main body of this group settled in New York. The remaining members, for reasons not now known, sailed on to Charles Town where they formed the nucleus of the Little Run
(Litter River), Long Cane and Cedar Creek (later Cedar Spring) Presbyterian churches.
Sometime prior to the taking of the 1820 Census in Gwinnett County, Georgia, Joseph and his family migrated there. In 1835, he sold his land in Gwinnett Countyto James Bracewell and moved to Floyd County. In 1844 he and Ann were in Chattooga County. On December 8, 1843, he purchased 295 acres of land in the fifth district of Gwinnett County from his son, Andrew. He bequeathed half this land to his son, James Nelson, and the other half to his wife, Ann.
Joseph Couey participated in a land lottery held in Georgia in 1820. His grant was for lot number 148 in the 11th district of Hall County. In 1827, he participated in another land lottery and was awared lot number 170 in the 12th district of Carroll County. This suggests the possibility that he served the cause of the American Revolution in some capacity, although he would have been quite young at the time. His place of birth was likely Northern Ireland. No one knows for sure.
Notes for Ann UNKNOWN: May have been Ann McLelland, who married first William Dougherty. Edward Couey says that there were McLellands living the area where the Coueys settled. Also, in a Chattooga County, Georgia document, Ann Couey refers to deceased Joseph as "my last husband." She is listed in the household of her son, William Y., in the 1850 U.S. Census of Floyd County, Georgia. |
