The north part of the town has been known as Chicopee from time immemorial and the long irregular Chicope Street following the Conneticutt River was the home of the first settlers, Deacon Chapin and his sons. Several of their descendants still live there. In 1652 the deacon was appointed one of the magnates of Springfield and in 1654 his commission was extended indefinitely. In 1656 the town voted to allow Deacon Chapin and three others 12 lbs. for their past services in the Lord's work on the Sabbath; and that in the future they would allow at the rate of 50 lbs. a year till such time as they should have a settled minster. In 1675 the colony of Springfield was one of those marked for destruction by Phillip (youngest son of Massasoit) and his followers.
