| One of the earliest settlers of the Meadows Community in Stokes County was Conrad Neal and His wife Dicey. They supposedly sailed from the coastal town of Londonderry in Ulster, Northern Ireland, a departure from the Irish migration of 1718. Landing on the Virginia shore at Norfolk, they traveled west along the Virginia-North Carolina border stopping at Rockingham County,North Carolina, then on to Stokes County,North Carolina, settling in Danbury, and starting a family there. They purchased about nine hundred acres of land in what is now called Meadows. Conrad was a farmer and a manufacturer of plug tobacco. The remains of the Neal tobacco factory still stands on Neal property on Dodgetown Road, now used as a warehouse. Dicey was a pipe-smoking ERA forerunner, and rode a gray mare to Germantown Court House on court days and sold cider and ginger cakes. John Thomas, a son of Conrad, had a son named William E. Neal who was my Great Grandfather. I would like to contact other Neal's whose Grandfathers or Grandmothers were Sons or Daughters of William Ezekial Neal or anyone who has more information on William Ezekial Neal's Siblings. |
