He married SUSAN MATILDA PAINE July 12, 1863 in Meigs County, Tennessee, daughter of STEVEN PAINE and MUHULDA RICHARDS.  She was born August 21, 1840, and died January 11, 1915 in Roane County, Tennessee.

Samuel and Susan both went to war - he to fight - she as a camp follower (which meant that she would help prepare meals or do whatever was needed around the camp).  Samuel D. Knox served in the Confederate Cavalry from May 5, 1862 until May 11, 1865.  He was assigned to Company H, 3rd Confederate Cavalry.  The company commander was Captain Sandusky, and the regimental commander was Colonel Howard.  The men would usually come back from riding patrols each day.  Susan told of sometimes riding side saddle on a horse following Samuel.  One time, Susan and another wife had stopped at a farm house to rest.  Once they were in the house, the occupants would not let them leave.  (There were many Northern Sympathizers in Eastern Tennessee, and we can only guess that they were being held to turn over to the Union authorities.)  When the women did not return, Samuel and the husband of the second woman started out to find them.  They were able to locate them when they found their horses at the farm, and because they were armed, persuaded the farmer to release their wives.

On October 18, 1863, Samuel was captured near Philadelphia, Tennessee.  A battle ensued on October 20-22, 1863.  Samuel was probably swept up in the Union advance while on picket duty.  He was taken first to Camp Chase, near Columbus, Ohio; then to Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island in the middle of the Delaware River.  He was held there until May 11, 1865, and then was released after taking the oath of allegiance to the United States.  He told of just being turned loose to find his way home by walking all the way back to Tennessee.  Although he was just 20 years old when released, he had suffered so terribly in prison-and had such a harsh diet - that his health was bad for the rest of his life.  He died at the age of 54.

We believe that Samuel and Susan were rejoined in Meigs County, Tennessee and then sometime after 1868, moved to Rockwood, Roane County, Tennessee.  Susan spoke of crossing the frozen Tennessee River by wagon and a team of oxen during the winter they moved to Rockwood.  Their twin girls died of Typhoid Fever, and were most likely buried in the Old Rockwood Cemetery, which was closed during the flu epidemic.  Another child of theirs, William (called Willie), had a brain fever when young and never developed mentally past 3-4 years of age.  When Samuel and Susan passed away, their daughter Louella took care of Willie for the rest of his life.  Louella never had children of her own.

DESPONDENT CITY OFFICER KILLS SELF ON SATURDAY
J. Q Knox Found Near City Limits With a Self Inflicted Wound in His Head
J. Q. Knox, until recently a city police officer, was found dead Saturday morning shortly before 8:00 o'clock, beside the right-of-way of the old narrow gauge railroad, near the city limits.  The dead man had a bullet wound in his head, the shot having entered the left temple and emerged on the right side of the head.  He was lying face downward, with a pistol at his feet, from which every indication pointing to the fact that he committed suicide.  Persons residing nearby heard the shot, and at once commenced an investigation that disclosed the body of the officer in a few minutes.  A coroner's jury was summond, and an inquest held, which established suicide as the cause of death.

Despondency over troubles in which he was involved is thought to have been the reason for his act of self destruction.  Mr. Knox was appointed city pound master when the law against live stock running at large was passed last April, and was dilligent and successful in enforcing its provisions.  In so doing he incurred the enmity of a certain element, and a number of young men and boys had taken every chance to bawl at him, mock him, and otherwise hinder him in his work.  This continued until some two or three weeks ago, when a few young men employed at the Roane County Packing co., plant yelled at Knox as he was passing on the street.  The officer proceeded to enter the building and severly beat up the first person he encountered, while the guilty parties escaped through a rear entrance.  Following this encounter, Knox was discharged from his job, and tried on a charge of assault.  He was bound over on this charge, and failed to obtain bond.  He then left town suddenly, and was gone for two days, returning Friday on a night train.  Saturday morning he started out to see his father who resides in the country, leaving home a little after 7:00 o'clock.  Since the holding of the inquest it is reported that he asked his wife for his pistol before he left, saying he was going to sell it.  This is the last that was seen of the unfortunate man, and it is supposed that he became despondent over the fact that he had lost his job, and was apparantly deserted by his friends and facing conviction and a jail sentence, and so determined to end his life.

Funeral services were conducted Monday by Rev. J. C. Cate, of Eureka, and burial was in the Odd Fellows' Cemetary.  Mr. Knox is survived by a wife, a son, and a married daughter who live in Rockwood, and several brothers who live near the city.  His father also survives him.  The deceased was about 50 years old, and his numerous friends and relatives regret his untimely and tragic death.   As an officer of the law, Mr. Knox served the city faithfully for some time, discharging well the duties of a difficult and unpopular position.

(NOTE - It is a family story that 30 years later, and on his deathbed, another man confessed to murdering James Q. Knox.  We are still looking for the confirmation to this family history)

Title:  Mrs. Will Knox Dies At Home Last Week

Mrs. Nancy Knox, wife of Will Knox, passed away at her home on North Wilder Street on Wednesday of last week, Nov. 21st.  She had suffered a heart attack which brought on her death.  She was a native of Meigs County but had lived in Rockwood for many years.  She was 61 years of age and a member of the Presbyterian Church.

Services were conducted from the chapel of the Booth Funeral Home on Friday afternoon, Nov. 23, at 1:30 P.M.  The Rev. C. F. Smith and Rev. C. S. Cassidy officiated with burial being made in the Oddfellow Cemetery.  Booth Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Knox is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Carl Spurling, Mrs. Carl Kirby and Mrs. Albert Nealon, all of Rockwood; three sons, Frank and Arthur Knox, of Rockwood, and Carl Knox, of the U.S. Army; four brothers, Sam True, of Rockwood, Tom True, of Monroe, Tenn., McKinley True of Elyria, Ohio, and Ernest True, of Cleveland, Tenn., three sisters, Mrs. Henry Carmichael of Cookeville, Mrs. Cora Lewis of Elyria, Ohio, and Mrs. James Cox of Greengold, Florida.

Notes for CARL WILLIAM KIRBY:
Carl Kirby survived both the July 27, 1925 Roane Iron Company mine explosion and the October 4, 1926 mine expolsion.  Carl and Earnest Brandon, who was the other survivor of the 1925 explosion,  provided details of the accident that was included in the Rockwood Times.   Carl was working in the No. 6 entry during the second explosion, and did not even feel the explosion.  

Carl was part of the auxiliary unit of the Roane County Rescue Squad.  This unit was called the Crewettes.

Frank Knox, well known local man who has had many years experience in the retail grocery and meat trade, is now manager of Clark's Food Store on Rockwood Avenue.  Mr. and Mrs. Knox are proprietors of a cafe next door to Clark's and will also continue to operate that business.

Hugh Clark, owner of Clark's food store, announces that he is opening a new store in Harriman.  He will spend his time in active management of the Harriman store.

Notes for CARL TAYLOR KNOX:
Carl was found dead beside the road somewhere up North.  Family members state that he was at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed and that he was hit with shrapnel.  They state that he was never the same after that and wandered all over and died while away from home.  His body was sent back to Roane County, where he was buried.

His gravestone has the information - Georgia PVT 451 Base Unit AAF  - inscribed.

MRS. RUBY S. KNOX DIES HERE SATURDAY

Mrs. Ruby Frances Strickland Knox, age 37, passed away at Chamberlain Memorial Hospital on Saturday, July 14th, following a heart attack.

Funeral services were conducted from the Piney Grove Baptist Church on Wednesday afternoon, July 18, at 2:30 p.m., with the Rev. K. B. Rodgers officiating.  Burial was made in the Piney Grove Cemetary with Booth Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Surviving are the husband, Carl Knox; her mother, Mrs. Edna McGlathen, of Rockwood; four daughters; Mrs. Wanda Lee Griffith, Mary Frances, Barbara Ann and Margaret Louise Strickland; two sons; Bill and James Thomas Strickland; three brothers; Dewey Williford of Emory Gap, Bob Williford of Detroit, and Meredith Williford of Rockwood; one sister; Mrs. Jewell Dean Buckner of Alexandria, Ohio.

Arthur reportedly (told to me by Phyllis, his neice) robbed a business or bank in California and before being caught - put the loot (money and/or jewelry) in a safety deposit box there.  He wrote his daughter to keep paying the deposit fees.  He was caught and put in prison.  His daughter later went to the bank and opened the box and found the loot.  It is believed that she kept it (no proof yet).
