DEATH OF JOSEPH VITATOE
Saturday last, Joseph Vitatoe, aged 71 years, died at his home near the quarry, after a long illness.  Mr. Vitatoe was born in this immediate section and spent all of his life here.  The remains were laid to rest in the Odd Fellows Cemetery Saturday evening.

Raymond (Paw) used to talk about how his Dad, John, walked to Tennessee from Bowling Green, Kentucky.  He found work in the Roane Iron Mine.

Raymond Warner gave information on John's death certificate.  Unfortunately, Raymond did not list John's parent's names.  In that space are letters that look like DK - but are probably UK for unknown.  Raymond also did not know John's birthdate, but stated that he was 72 years old at the time and was retired.  Trade or profession was not listed.  The doctor listed contributory causes of importance not related to principal cause as 93D.  Anyone knowing what this means, please contact me!

William Edward Warner, age 80, a retired Fireman for the Tennessee Products and Chemical Corp. passed away on Wednesday, February 1 at the home of his son in Rockwood.

Funeral services were conducted on Friday, February 3 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Booth Funeral Home.  Rev. Ira Sexton officiated.

Surviving are 3 sons; Willard and Roscoe Warner of Rockwood, Johnny Warner of Detroit, Michigan; four daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Miles of Marietta, Georgia, Mrs. Gordon Sexton of Sunbright, Mrs. Norman Brown of Columbus, Ohio and Mrs. Jack Knox of Helper, Utah; brothers Raymond and Elmer Warner and sister, Mrs. Robert Younce, 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

MATILDA THOMAS PASSES
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Matilda Thomas, 66, Route 2, who died Sunday at Chamberlain Memorial Hospital after several weeks' illness.  Services were held Monday afternoon at the First Presbyterian Church in a double funeral with her brother-in-law Alexander Smith Thomas.

Surviving are her husband, John Thomas; son Freemon Thomas, Garretteville, Ohio; brothers Will Warner, Raymond Warner, and Elmer Warner all of Rockwood; sisters Mrs. Will Collette and Mrs. Robert Younce both of Rockwood. Pallbearers were Tommy Scott, Tom Ward, Zirkle Cooper, Charles Wilson, Willard Wilson and James Grant.  Booth Funeral Home in charge.

Matilda's information in the Booth Funeral Home book says her parents were John Warner and Rebecca Hayes.

Notes for PAULINE THOMAS:
Pauline and Emma Leffew Warner were good friends, spending time together often.  Bill (Emma's son) remembers riding around with them when he was little. Dolly Warner Renfro was also very fond of Pauline, and said she was her "favorite" aunt/cousin.

In an odd stroke of fate, Pauline's first husband died in much the same way that her father-in-law had and Pauline also bought a house shortly after - in Clymersville.  I would suppose that she also collected some sort of settlement.

Pauline later married Jim Cates and moved to Ohio.  They divorced, and she came back to Rockwood.  Later on, she went back to him in Ohio and they remarried.

Phillip almost died in the furnace accident that killed his father, trying to get to him to save him.  He later worked in the coal mines, and died there in an explosion.

Mr. Elmer Earl Warner, age 72, a retired Boiler Operator of Rockwood, passed away August 17, 1876 at the U. T. Memorial Hospital.  The funeral will be Thursday, August 19 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Booth Funeral Home with the Rev. Daniel presiding.

Survivors include wife, Nettie Warner, daughters, Mrs. James Foust, Mrs. Earl Renfro and  sister Mrs. Robert Yonce all of Rockwood.  Three grandchildren and one great grandchild.  Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetary with Booth's in charge of arrangments.

Notes for VIVIAN COLLETT:
Vivian was outside with her mother while she was washing clothes.  Back then, they used lye to wash clothes, and her mother had mixed the lye in with water to put in the wash.  She had dumped nearly all of it out and sat it down on the porch.  The baby grabbed it up and drank the little bit left in the bucket before her mother could stop her.  Little Vivian suffered a long drawn out death while the lye ate away at her insides.
