Descendants of William Pope Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM1 POPE Notes for WILLIAM POPE: THE HERITAGE OF ROANE COUNTY, TENNESSEE 1801-1999 PAGE 280 Submitted by: H. Jackson Pope, Kingston, Tennessee It has been reported that William Pope was the immigrant ancestor of the Pope family in Roane County. The first record reportedly found was in 1655 when he received a grant in Westmoreland County and a second in the Isle of Wright County, Virginia. His descendants remained in southeastern Virginia for several generations. Jehu Pope, son of Nathan Pope and Patience Everett, was the first of the line to have come to Tennessee. The family also appears to have owned land in Northhampton County, North Carolina and Jehu may have resided there for a period of time. Children of WILLIAM POPE are: 2. i. NATHAN2 POPE, b. Abt. 1720; d. September 1769, Southhampton County, Virginia. ii. ISAAC POPE. iii. JOSHUA POPE. Generation No. 2 2. NATHAN2 POPE (WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1720, and died September 1769 in Southhampton County, Virginia. He married (1) ANN WILLIAMS. He married (2) PATIENCE EVERETT 1755 in St. Luke's Parish, Southhampton, Virginia. She was born Abt. 1735, and died May 1779 in Southhampton County, Virginia. Notes for NATHAN POPE: Nathan's will was also found by another researcher. He states that Nathan dated his will for March 29, 1766 and it was recorded on September 26, 1769. The will included a codicil listing two daughters, Patience and Charity, born after the will was first written. Nathan named his wife, Patience, and a brother Isaac Pope, as executors of his estate. Notes for ANN WILLIAMS: John Williams will indicates that his daughter is Mrs. Nathan Pope. The will was found by another researcher in the Isle of Wight County, Virginia records. Notes for PATIENCE EVERETT: Some researchers say that Patience last name was Averett instead of Everett. Patience dated her will on November 3, 1777 and it was recorded in court on May 13, 1779. Witnesses were Joshus Johnson, Moses Johnson, and Josiah Pope. The order of the children listed corresponds to the order given in Patience's will. Guardian records for Southampton County indicate that Elijah Pope was appointed guardian for Nathan Pope, orphan of Nathan Pope and that a bond was posted. A date of October 14, 1779 was listed, indicating that he was either not yet of age at that time or unable to care for himself for some reason. No record of a guardian was indicated for Jehu, Phoebe or Joel, but a bond was posted on July8, 1784 by Burton Barnes, guardian for Richard Pope,, orphan of Nathan Pope. Bonds were also posted for Patience and Charity by their guardian, Elijah Crorker. Children of NATHAN POPE and ANN WILLIAMS are: i. JONATHAN3 POPE. ii. ELIJAH POPE. Children of NATHAN POPE and PATIENCE EVERETT are: 3. iii. JEHU3 POPE, b. Abt. 1760, Southhampton County, Virginia; d. Unknown. iv. NATHAN POPE, b. Abt. 1758. v. PHOEBE POPE, b. Abt. 1760. vi. JOEL POPE, b. Abt. 1762. vii. RICHARD POPE, b. Abt. 1763. viii. PATIENCE POPE, b. Abt. 1768. ix. CHARITY POPE, b. Abt. 1769. Generation No. 3 3. JEHU3 POPE (NATHAN2, WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1760 in Southhampton County, Virginia, and died Unknown. He married HANNAH ?. She was born Bet. 1760 - 1769, and died Unknown. Notes for JEHU POPE: This Jehu may very well be the same Jehu Pope who died in 1802 in Jefferson County, Tennessee and is the progenerator of the Pope family in Roane County. Records from Jefferson County indicate that Jehu had married Hannah ?, the record of her last name having been lost. Jehu's mother, Patience, died in 1779. Probably shortly after Jehu had come of age. Court records have been found naming guardians for several of the Pope children, but not for Jehu. He is reported to have married while still in Virginia, but by late 1782, he had moved with his wife over the Appalachian Mountains and into western North Carolina. He located with his family on the south side of the Holston River, a region which was then part of Washington County, NC - but is now Jefferson County, Tennessee. In 1795, thirteen years after Jehu moved there, Washington County had a total white male population, sixteen years and older, of only 2013. This was definately a frontier area and settlements were subject to frequent Indian attacks. Clearly, the local militia would have been regularly called on for defense and reprisals during a period of frequent Indian raids. The first record that has been found of Jehu there is the issuance of two vouchers from the state of North Carolina, dated August 16, 1782. These vouchers were issued either for services provided or in payment for supplies. In reviewing the names included in the entire set of vouchers, it was found that most of the men were paid only once, and usually in the same amount. Such a large number of payments by the state would suggest that the payments were for services rendered, and not for supplies. Men performing equal tasks for an equal amount of time would have been paid equal amounts. Many of the men listed are known to have served in the Revolutionary War, as indicated later by pension applications. The timing may also be significant. The war against the British had begun to wind down with Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown on October 19, 1781. The last battle of the war, west of the Appalachian Mountains, was fought on Lookout Mountain. Bands of Chickamauga Indians, encouraged and supplied by British agents during the War, were making daily raids on frontier cabins. The Chiefs of these lower Cherokee towns, split off from the Overhill Cherokee, had neither signed treaties nor agreed to any peace terms. The North Carolina Legislature had authorized a campaign against this group during its 1782 July session. Colonel John Sevier raised a force of 250 riflemen from Sullivan and Washington counties, and left for an expedition in September of 1782. The expidition destroyed the deserted Indian villages at Bull Town, Settico, Vann's and Chickamauga, cornered a band of warriors on Lookout Mountain, and quickly brought them to submission. The raid stopped the attacks on the Washington and Sullivan County settlements for a short while. It is speculated, based on the uniformity of the pay records, the timing of the voucher, and the fact that the vouchers were issued under the authorization of Colonel Anthony Bledsoe in the same locality where the troops were raised, that Jehu may have been among the 250 men who participated in the battle. There may be other explanations, but this seems to be the best one found as yet. Jehu bought 230 acres in 1797 from Thomas Flippin, "on the south side of Holston's River one quarter mile above mouth of first branch that empties into said river above mouth of Mossy Creek, adjacent to Thomas English and (the record is illegible, but the first name is probably "Christopher") Hanes". The records state that "Thomas Flippin, Blacksmith, Deed to John (sic) Pope, planter, 200 acres for 40 pounds." with the dates of June 28, 1798 and August 22, 1797. The 1800 Jefferson County tax list inludes Jehu Pope as living there in Capt. Harmon's company and paying taxes on 400 acres and 1 poll tax. At the time of his death in 1802 (probable date), Jehu appears to have been in his mid forties. Jefferson County Order Book 1801-07 reports that, in March/April 1804: "The Court appoints James Reese, Wm. Lyon and Dudley Cox to settle with Johnathan Newman, Admin., of JEHU POPE deceased." One may speculate as to the relationship between Jonathan Newman and the Pope family. Perhaps this is a relative of Hannah, but he may also simply have been a close friend or neighbor. Then, in July 1804: "Christopher Hanes was appointed Guardian for Lois Pope, William Pope and Nancy Pope who entered into Bond with Henry Bradford & Benjamin Murrell his faithful performance herein." In October 1804, the court was notified that the estate yielded $1232.1/3 cents, which was in the hands of the childrens' guardian, Christopher Hanes. Census records indicate that there may have been a significant age difference between Jehu and Hannah. Hannah Pope, administratix for Jehu Pope, deceased, sued John Williams for 150 acres on August 3, 1803. We don't know whether this John Williams was related to the family through Nathan Pope's in-laws, but the family name and the fact that the families were in close business dealings suggests that is may well be the case. After Jehu's death, Hannah married Laney Funderburk. After Jehu's children came of age, Laney bought the land inherited from their father. Land records indicate that he purchased 143 acres in 1820 from Robert Doak, acquired when he married the daughter of John (sic) Pope. He purchased William Pope's 143 acres in 1824. Children of JEHU POPE and HANNAH ? are: 4. i. WILLIAM EDWARD4 POPE, b. Abt. 1799, Jefferson County, Tennessee; d. July 1866, Roane County, Tennessee. ii. NANCY POPE. iii. LOIS POPE. Generation No. 4 4. WILLIAM EDWARD4 POPE (JEHU3, NATHAN2, WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1799 in Jefferson County, Tennessee, and died July 1866 in Roane County, Tennessee. He married (1) ELIZABETH ?. She was born Abt. 1816 in Tennessee. He married (2) ELIZA HODGE October 31, 1817 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. She was born Unknown in Tennessee, and died Unknown. Notes for WILLIAM EDWARD POPE: William Edward Pope was the first of the family to settle in Roane County, Tennessee. He came to the Loudon County section of Roane County after the establishment of Blair's Ferry around 1827. He is in the 1828 church statistics as a delegate representing Sweetwater Church at the churches association meeting. William's family owned a farm and ferry on the Holston River by which they traveled to find their new home in Roane County. 1850 ROANE COUNTY CENSUS 151 Pope, William E., 50, None, 800, Tn Elizabeth, 34, TN John D., 12, TN George O. or T., 8, TN Mary A., 5, Tn Wm. TEAGUE Jeffory Ray Teague underwent surgery Monday, March 19, at U-T Hospital Knoxville. He is listed in satisfactory condition and is expected to return home later this week. He is the grandson of Raymond and Charlene Teague of Rt. 1 Rockwood. The above surgery was the second surgery done due to a knife wound. Jeff was walking in the woods behind his grandparents house one winter day. He had a large hunting knife in his pocket (one that does not close) and he fell. The knife cut a large slash in his leg, which required surgery, leg braces and still affects him today. After staying home a while, recuperating, going to work in Roane County, he decided he wanted to try again to become a Marine. He re enlisted in July of 1999. He finally made it, with no problems. He called home on the Sunday before graduation to tell the family that he would be graduating on October 1, 1999 at 9:00 A.M. Me, David, Chris and Jeff's girlfriend at the time, April, left out on Thursday night at 8:00 P.M. to attend his graduation ceremony.
