The Harriman Record, Friday, December 29, 1905. Vol XV, No. 27:
Last Friday, a man named Amos AITES, while passing over a trestle of one (torn) branches of the Tennessee Central near Otter Creek, Cumberland County, saw the body of a man lying below the trestle. It was later found to be that of Hiram Lawson of Oliver Springs, an old veteran, aged 75 years. He had left Oliver Springs on the 14th and had gone by train to the nearest station to Otter Creek and started to walk the track. In passing over the trestle, it was evident that he had fallen to the ground below, about 15 feet. The absence of any serious injury indicated that he had been stunned by the fall and later perished from being chilled. In a pocket was found a pension voucher for $36, his quarters pension. The fact that he had left the home of one of his children on the 14th and was not found until the 22nd caused no alarm because it had been expected that he had reached the home of another of his children at Otter Creek all right. It appears that his people at Otter Creek did not know that he was coming. The body was removed to Oliver Springs for burial we understand.
