Marriage Notes for Eisine Effie Hoppen and Carl Martin Wilhelms:
Carl Martin Wilhelms was born in Jemgum, Germany on March 25, 1899 to Emil and Elskea Steen Wilhelms. He came to the United States in 1909 at the age of 10 with his parents, a brother, Menno, and two sisters, Dede and Helen. He became a U.S. Citizen in 1919 and settled in Rosemont, Nebraska. Before marriage, he did farm work for Bill Stroh near Rosemont.
In 1921 he was married to Eisine (Ida) Hoppen, daughter of Dirk and Hinderike (Luitjens) Hoppen. They live on the farm northeast of Rosemont owned at the time by William Busking, Sr., until 1934.
The family was kept busy milking cows, gardening, raising hogs and putting up fruit from the orchard.During the drought years when highway #4 was constructed he, along with many other farmers, worked on the highway. Most of the work was done with horse or mule-drawn dump wagons.
After moving from the Busking farm in 1934, they rented the Edgar McBride land south of Rosemont which was then a watershed project. They lived here until the project manager moved into the buildings and they took up residence on the Ralph Van Boening farmstead.
In 1952 they purchased the former Herman Eigenberg property in Rosemont. They farmed their 80 acres of land north of Rosemont which was purchased from Mrs. Oliver Shepherd in 1926.Along with renting the Oberle Farm northwest of Rosemont and the Szopieray Farm southeast of Rosemont until Carl's health failed and they held their farm sale in November, 1961.At this time their son, Roy, took over the farming operation plus the land he already was farming. After a long illness Carl passed away June 30, 1963 and is buried in the Rosemont Cemetery.Ida remained in Rosemont until 1973.She had her sale in December, 1973 and moved to West Gate Manor in Blue Hill, Nebraska. She enjoys all the activities there, 'quilting, playin bridge, their dinners".Seems she is always busy.
All their children were born northeast of Rosemont on the Busking farm. They attended school at District #84, Rosemont Pulbic School and high school in Blue Hill.
