Leer, March 26, 1890 (date is in question - probably 1900)
Dear brother-in-law and sister,
I can only hope that you are well when receiving this letter.We, however, are very sad, because our dearest father died 8 days ago.He took a walk at 5:30 p.m., was very happy and healthy at that time.He came home around 6:00 p.m., and complained to mother that he was not feeling well.Mother told him to go to bed and rest, so he could go back to work fresh the next morning.Fifteen minutes later, mother wanted to check on him, and did not hear him breathing any more.A doctor came very soon, trying to shake his body, but it was too late.Father died of a heart attack.Also, Uncle Konrad has been sick for four weeks.He is a little better now.Aunt Manna also has some little attacks on her brain.
We wanted to write to you sooner, but we were a bit confused by father's death.Forgive us.
Dear brother-in-law and sister, did you receive the bean and flower seeds which mother sent 3 weeks ago?She mailed 4 packages.The small ones are salad beans.You need to put them on small sticks.The other ones are normal beans.
We still have winter here and didn't have one nice spring day yet.How is it with illnesses and diseases there?We have a lot of people dying daily.
I will close for now.We send our greetings and kisses to everybody.Please give our regards to Peter and his siblings.Please write back soon.

Dear brother-in-law and sister,
We received your letter in good health and learned that you all are doing well.Mother was very happy about the money, and thank you very much.
My dear brother-in-law, you are mentioning the funeral costs; yes, it would have been bad if father would not have been working in the factory, especially having been without employment for so long.Nine days before his death he started working there, and thank God we received DM 50, with which we cold pay mot of the costs.We buried father second class, because I didn't want a poor funeral.People would have talked about us, and I wouldn't have liked that.
My dear sister, you wrote that you received only part of the seeds that mother sent.One package must have been lost completely, because she sent 4 packages.We enclose more seeds in this letter, and hope you receive them well.
Dear sister and brother-in-law, the weather was very bad here, but for the last 3 or 4 days it has been better.Nobody from Wilhelmshaven could come to the funeral because Christian von Schoten and Marie Hantelmann had their confirmation.Aunt Marie and Hilke gave some travel money to mother, so mother and Henderk could travel to Wilhelmshaven over Easter.Hendark, himself, will write to you about this trip.

Dear brother and sister,
We had a wonderful time in Wilhelmshaven, and especially for mother it was a wonderful time, because she had not seen her sister for 24 years.It was also very special for me, because we do not have such great shipping ports, and I could see lots of war vessels.Aunt Marie eans money like hay, because she is dealing in shrimps.She buys a pound for 10 pfennings, and sells it for 30!I wish it could be the same here.The Handelmann family is also doing very well.Aunt Hilke is still as happy as always.Aunt Mannor and Uncle Konrad celebrated their silver wedding on April 30th.They say hello to you.
My dear sister, if you should come back here to Leer, you would be surprised how things have changed.Leer and Heisfelde are almost one, and this summer, they will build a big seaport and above the river there will be a big dam.
Dear brother-in-law and sister, we both had to go to be recruited this year.But Johann released from duty, and I was turned-back until next year.I want to close now, happy greetings from all of us.Please say hello to all our relatives over there.
