JAN. 4, 1917 - JOHN KERWIN HAS SUCCUMBED
Well Known DeKalb Farmer Died at Eighth Street Home Last Night - Sick But Two Weeks- Deceased Had Been Sick But a Short Time, But Advanced Age Was Against His Recovery

After an illness extending over a period of but two weeks, John Kerwin died last night about 10:15 at the family home on North Eighth Street. Mr Kerwin was a native of Ireland, being born in Tipperary nearly 82 years ago. At the age of 20 years he decided to come to America and cast his lot and settled first in Massachusetts, where he worked in the woolen mills. After a few years of factory life the deceased came to Dekalb County, settling on a farm in Afton Township in the year 1872. After many years of successful farming, Mr. & Mrs. Kerwin decided to move to Dekalb to spend their last days, and moved to town last spring.

Mrs. Kerwin suffered an accident about 12 years ago in which she fractured her hip and the majority of the time since had been confined to her bed. The deceased was taken ill about two weeks ago, and despite the every effort of the physician and the family, his advanced age was against recovery, and death relieved him his sufferings last night.

There are left to mourn his departure his wife, one daughter and five sons, Tom, Martin, Joe, and John Kerwin living in DeKalb, William Kerwin of Lindenwood, and Mrs. Katie O'Malley living east of Dekalb. Two brothers and one sister also survive. These in addition to many, many, friends are left to mourn the passing of this good man and citizen.      The funeral services will be held Sunday morning at ten o'clock at St. Mary's church, and interment in St. Mary's cemetery.

Her marriage to John Kerwin occurred when she was 17 years of age, the marriage taking place in the east where the Shanahan family first settled. Shortly after the marriage Mr. and Mrs. Kerwin came to Illinois, settling on a farm near Oswego, where they lived until 1890, when they moved to a farm in this county.   Notes for JOHN J. KERWIN:
BLAME GAS ON DEATH OF ONE
Coroner's Jury Returns Verdict Late Yesterday in Death of Kerwin.
CASE IS ENDED

The death of John Kerwin age 68, on Monday, was due to asphyxiation, resulting from inhaling gas containing carbon monoxide and thought to be due to escaping illuminating gas from a leak in the gas main in the street near where Kerwin resided, according to a verdict returned late yesterday afternoon by a coroner's jury investigating the death. The verdict was reached after considerable testimony had been presented by the witnesses summoned by Coroner Dr. R. P. Culver. Because word that the in-quest would be held at 3:00 o'clock in the afternoon had not been spread about much, the group present for the investigation was not very large.

The testimony did not disclose very much that was not already known. The verdict was primarily based upon the testimony of three people, Dr. E. W. Telford, Dr. R. G. McAllister and Dr. G.L. Sims. Dr. Telford testified that in his opinion, death was due to asphyxiation. Dr. McAllister, who made a chemical test of the blood, testified that the analysis disclosed a considerable amount of carbon monoxide in the blood. Mr. Sims, local manager for the Illinois Northern Utilities Co., testified concerning the discovery of a break In the gas main located in the street outside of the home where the death occurred, on Grove Street, midway between Second and Third Streets.

Dr. Telford also testified that it was his opinion and the opinion of others who were with him at the time Kerwin was found that there were no indications that Mr. Kerwin has used alcoholic liquors at the time he was overcome.

Several Others Heard

The inquest held at the Nelson and Ronan chapel was opened at 3:00 o'clock. Both the Gas Company and the relatives of the deceased were represented by attorneys. Those summoned to testify before the coroner's jury included Thomas McCann, who was the first to discover the three men, John Kerwin, Allen Hughes, and William Flynn were ill; Officer Maynard E. Ebbesen, Peter Christianson, Officer C. S. Rowe, Mr. Sims and the two doctors, Dr. Telford and Dr. McAllister. Dr. Telford, in his testimony, praised the manner in which Officer Ebbesen administered artificial respiration.

Reports today were that both Hughes and Flynn have practically recovered from the effects of the carbon monoxide, which they inhaled.
