Notes for E
LIZABETH ANN LYON:
According to Mrs. Roe's book, "Recollections of Frontier Life," she and her husband, Dr. John Roe, departed from Eddyville, Kentucky for Illinois on February 18, 1827. He drove a two-horse wagon while she drove a one-horse buggy, with a babe in her arms and another dear little boy, two years old, at her feet.
They got along very well until they were within fifty miles of Edwardsville. The frost was just coming out of the ground and Dr. Roe had to get a team of oxen to draw them out of the mud three times in traveling eight miles.
They finally reached the home of John Messenger, who lived two and a half miles northeast of Belleville, the County seat of St. Clair County, Illinois. John Messenger's wife was Mrs. Roe's half sister, (both being daughters of Matthew Lyon) and they had never met before.
After a very pleasant visit with the Messengers, the travelers journeyed on to Morgan County, where another half sister, Mrs. George Cadwell resided on a farm seven miles from Jacksonville. Dr. George Cadwell had died the year before, leaving a large family of daughters. (He and John Messenger had left Eddyville, Kentucky, in 1803, because of their objection to slavery, and were early pioneers of Illinois.) The talents of both men were very useful in the development of the new country.
Dr. and Mrs. Roe were deeply religious in the Methodist faith and were recognized leaders of church life in pioneer days. They settled first in Springfield, a small village with houses built of logs, daubed with the black mud of the prairies. Those were the days of camp-meetings and very soon Dr. and Mrs. Roe were overjoyed to be reunited with an old friend - the Presiding Elder, the Rev. Peter Cartwright. The Rev. Peter Cartwright was an evangelist; originally from Virginia who emigrated to Kentucky when young man and while presiding at camp-meetings had been a frequent guest in the Matthew Lyon home in Eddyville. He had administered the ordinance of baptism on Elizabeth Lyon as a child. For many years now he bad been engaged in his missionary work in the vicinity of Springfield, Illinois.

(Copied from the funeral sermon at the Re-interment of Dr. John Roe by Rev. Thos. R. Satterfield, Pastor of Light House Point M. E. Church, Ogle County, Illinois.)

"Dr. John Roe was buried in Nebraska in June, 1871. Being on the frontier of a new state, he was away from nearly all his old friends and relatives, his wife and one son only being present to drop a tear. By the affection of his wife (who has made her home here) and children, his body has been brought to this place for re-interment, and today are gathered in this house his children and friends. They have come from Kentucky, from Iowa, from Chicago, from Malta, from Ashton, from Franklin Grove, from Chana and from Mt. Morris, to be present at this re-interment.

Dr. John Roe was born in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Aug.19, 1800. He married Elizabeth Ann Lyon, at Eddyville, Kentucky in 1821, moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, in 1827, and from thence to Light House Point in the winter of 1834. He was the first settler in Light House Point. He assisted in building the first M. E. Church and the first school house in this place. For many years he was a devoted and successful class leader, saying to the people, "Follow me, as I follow Christ."

In 1845 he moved to the city of Chicago, and in 1849 he moved to Mt. Morris. In the spring of 1850, with four of his sons, he went to California; in 1851 he settled at Paynes Point; in 1854 he moved to the city of Rockford; in 1856 he located at Bethel in Ogle County; in 1865 moved to Malta, DeKaIb County; in 1869 he emigrated to Gage County, Nebraska, at which place he died suddenly of apoplexy, June 21, 1871.

A wife and children's affection have brought the husband and father's body from a distant State to repose in this soil, the soil, of which he was at one time, the sole possessor. He had a clear title to it in fee simple; but in the benevolence of his heart he gave it to the trustees of the Light House M.E. Church, both as a place in which to erect a church and as a free burying ground for rich and poor. Here, at the scene of his early labors, he desired that his body should be buried. Back in 1835, when the settlers began to come in, Dr. Roe's double log cabin was opened as a place of worship, and was the first regularly established preaching place for this section of the Rock River Mission."

In this double log cabin, built in 1834, Elizabeth Roe kept a light in the window to guide her husband, if his duties called him away at night. In winter there were deep snows, there were swamps, heavy mud, and no bridges. The light could be seen by travelers from some distance. The pioneers learned of this light in the window and called the place "Light House." The name was given the church that was built in 1836.
In her last sleep, Elizabeth Roe lies beside her husband in the burial ground he himself gave to the community.
