Mathew Cartwright Roe was born near Springfield, Ill., Nov. 9, 1830 and died at Herndon, IA., May 27, 1907; aged 76 yrs., 6 mos., 18 days.

In childhood he with his parents moved to Lighthouse Point, Ogle Co. Ill., where he lived the years of his youth and received his education. He attended and graduated from the Mt. Morris Seminary of Ogle Co., Ill. 1844 the family moved to Chicago. Ill. and remaining there five years. In the early fifties Mr. Roe with his father made a trip to California residing there two years. He was married in Jan. 1855 to Mary Ann Austin. There came to this home two sons and one daughter, Oscar Eddie of Vinton, IA., Augustus Benton of Chicago, Ill.; and Mrs. E. A. Wykoff of Perry, IA. They moved to Iowa in the fall of 1864 and located at Cedar Rapids which place remained their home for fourteen years. Then they moved to Grand Junction, IA., in the year 1878. Here occurred the death of his companion in 1879 who had sojourned by his aide for thirty-four years. Her body was laid to rest in the home cemetery and family burying ground, Lighthouse Point, Ogle, Co. Ill., which cemetery was founded by the father of Mr. Roe. For twenty years Grand Junction, IA. continued to be the home of Mr. Roe. In September 1893 he married Lavinia Ann Simmerman of Bagley, IA. They moved to Herndon in the year 1898 which since that time has been the family home.
Mathew Roe became a member the Methodist Episcopal church in 1854. He lived a conscientious and devoted christian life. The active work of the church was his delight, willing at all times to render any service within his power and ability for the Master's kingdom. Repeatedly he served as class leader in the church. Almost continuously he filled the place of Sunday school superintendent, being called to the office in every place that he lived. He rejoiced in the service of the young people, loved the singing of gospel songs, the study of the bible, prayer and religious and spiritual instruction. Everybody was attracted by the kindly words, the joyous spirit and the brotherly sincerity of the deceased. He was beloved by young and old; all with whom he came in contact became his friends.
In his home he was a christian father and devoted husband. He bore a deep interest in the welfare of those who were near and dear to him. He never failed to intercede for them at the throne of divine grace. The regular observance of family devotion was regarded a sacred christian privilege in his home. Those reared in the atmosphere of those moments of spiritual communion and fellowship testify to their inspiring wholesomeness.
As a citizen, the deceased was highly regarded. Every question of public welfare enlisted his intense interest. In matters political he was a republican from youth up. After having attended a meeting of the board of trustees of Herndon church on last Monday evening he returned home, observing the usual evening devotion he seated himself by the table to read. While thus seated, without a moments warning death came suddenly and separated soul from body. In his death the church looses a strong and valiant member. The community and all who knew him have been bereft of a true friend and a sincere friend. He leaves mourning his departure his wife, two sons, one daughter and two brothers, John H. and Malcolm C., of Chana, Ill. At his own request and that of the family, his body was laid to rest in the old home cemetery, Light House Point, on Friday of last week.

Notes for J
OHN S. CONLIN:
                  FATAL ACCIDENT

On Friday night of last week about 8 o'clock Eugene Dedrick heard the cries of a man in the Malta yards and on investigating found the mangled form of John Conlin, a well known farmer of Milan township. He was picked up just east of the first street crossing west of G.H. Gurler's creamery. He was evidently attempting to get out of the way of a freight train coming from the west side and was struck by the fast passenger train from the east. Soon a crowd gathered and he was taken to the hotel and from there to City hall. Dr. G.N. Lucas was called, also Dr. J.M. Everett and Dr. J.S. Rankin, both of DeKalb. An examination of his wounds was made about 10 o'clock, and it was generally agreed that death was certain. Both of his legs were broken below the knees and the bone of his right leg badly shattered. His right arm was crushed several times between the elbow and the shoulder. He did not seem to have been run over by the wheels of the train but it is marvellous how he could have received so many bone fractures without being ground to pieces.

He regained consciousness enough to tell the people attending him that he was struck by the fast passenger train. His life hung in the balances all night and his spirit passed to the God who gave it at almost eight o'clock Saturday morning, Sept. 30. 1899.

He was born in Ireland about 65 years ago and came to this country when a comparatively a young man. He married Miss Rowe, a sister of Dr. Rowe of Franklin Grove, and Dr. Rowe of Chana. They were the parents of eight children, three girls, five boys, as follows: John, Charles, Richard, James, Edward, Lizzie, Mary, and Maggie.

Mrs. Conlin was for many years an invalid and died about a year ago. Coroner Morris was called on Sunday and the inquest was held. The jury was: R.M. Patterson, W.L. Stephens, Ed. Larson, Wm. Smith, E.D. Bone, foreman. They brought a verdict in accordance with the above facts.

The funeral service was held at the Malta M.E. church on Monday and the remains were laid to rest in the Malta cemetery. The address was made by Rev. J.M. Wheaton, formerly pastor of the church, and a great friend of Mr. Conlin.

The deceased was one of the most noble hearted citizens of this locality in cases of sickness or trouble in the neighborhood, no one was ahead of Uncle John Conlin in rendering assistance and consolation. His funeral was attended by a large concourse of friends showing the esteem in which he was held by the community.

Among those who attended the funeral from a distance were the following: Mrs. McCann and daughter, Rockford; Dr. M.C. Rowe and wife, Chana; John H. Rowe, Chana; Samuel Mitchell and wife, Chana; Fred Rowe and Daughter, Franklin Grove.

  Notes for MARY ELLEN CONLIN:
Married at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. John Conlin, January 30, 1896, at 9 a.m. by Rev. James M. Wheaton, M. Clyde Veal eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Marwood Veal, to Miss Mary Conlin, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Conlin.
The bride tastily arrayed in pink silk with white trimmings, never looked more beautiful, while the groom appeared to fully appreciate that he had succeeded in securing a rare prize. They were attended by their brother and sister Edward Conlin and Merta Veale, who had every reason to feel proud, as well as highly delighted with their new relations.
Many and valuable presents. a most bountiful repast, a large circle of friends and relatives, conspired to make the event an occasion most enjoyable as well as long to be remembered.
The most estimable young couple have the best wishes and congratulations of a large circle of friends, now that their cup of joy is full, and will not fail of hoping that they may have a long, happy, and prosperous voyage through life.
The happy couple amid a shower of rice, took the train to Shabbona for Aurora where they will spend a few hours visiting friends and relatives at the Seminary, thence they will go to Downers Grove, where a reception will be tendered them by friends and relatives at the residence of the bride's uncle, Dr. Frank Roe, a prominent physician of that place.
After a few weeks of delightful roving, during which time they expect to visit friends from St. Charles, they will return to the homestead of Mr. Marwood Veale where they intend to settle down to real life, accompanied by the best wishes of a thoroughly delighted community. J.M. Wheaton

  Notes for ADA FRANCES CONLIN:
On Monday last the family of John Conlin were called upon to suffer a severe affliction in the death of a little daughter, about nine years of age. They have two or three other children lying at the point of death with the same disease, diphtheria. The funeral took place Wednesday at the M.E. church, Rev. William Brown preaching the funeral discourse. The sorrowing family have the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement as was attested by the large concourse of friends that accompanied them to the last resting place of their little loved one. "Not lost, but gone before".
