Bartle did not want to be mayor of Kansas City. "It was put upon my heart and soul," he says, "to accept the mantle of honest leadership." But there is more to the story than that. He had already decided to retire from Scouting in 1956, and channel his energies into a new project. As a Scout leader, he was convinced that nowhere were young men and women educated specifically for youth-leadership careers. In 1947 he had organized the American Humanics Foundation, Inc., to finance such training at the college level Into this scheme he had put S100,000 of his own money, plus large contributions he had talked friends into making. He wanted to spread American Humanics across the nation.
