Family Photos

  • Emily Johnson & Frank Widergren, U. S. and Sweden (14 KB)
Emily Johnson (1864-1895), my great-grandmother, was my first ancestor to be born in the U. S. (Altona, Illinois). She married my great-grandfather, Frans (Frank) Widergren (1861-1934), a young immigrant from her father's home town in Sweden--Stockaryd, Jönköping län. They homesteaded in Kansas, but were driven out by drought in the 1890s. Emily died young (31), leaving behind two young children. My great-grandfather eventually remarried and became a prosperous businessman in a bustling Nebraska town.
  • Andrew P. (Anders Peter Johansson) Holm 1837-1920 (10 KB)
This is the only photo we have of my second great-grandfather, Andrew P. Holm. He was born Anders Peter Johansson in Ringarum, Östergötland, Sweden, but changed his name to Andrew P. Holm when he immigrated to the United States in the 1880s.
  • Thomas Muschamp, 1580-1629, Britain (16 KB)
Thomas Muschamp, my 9th great-grandfather, was born in Britain (probably in Northumberland) in 1580 and died a colonel in the Swedish infantry in 1629 in Marienburg, Prussia.
  • Johannes Widergren & Catharina Nisbeth, Sweden (16 KB)
My second great-grandparents, Johannes Widergren (1813-1885) and Catharina Nisbeth (1828-Unknown). Catharina was Thomas Muschamp's 5th great-granddaughter. Johannes and Catharina lived most of their lives in Stockaryd, Jönköping län, Sweden, where Johannes was the school master.
  • Sven and Lena Johnson, Sweden (27 KB)
Another set of second great-grandparents. Sven (1835-1921) and Lena (1838-1916) Johnson were my first ancestors to immigrate to the United States. They arrived here from Sweden (Stockaryd and Skepperstad, Jönköping län, respectively) in 1857.
  • Ole Nilsen and Brid Østensdatter, Lom, Norway (13 KB)
My Norwegian great-grandparents, Ole Nilsen (1828-early 1900s)and Brid Østensdatter (1830-abt. 1920), from Lom, Oppland, Norway
  • Jens and Jorgina Lind Eye, Denmark (20 KB)
My Danish great-grandparents. Jens Eye (1853-1936) was a printer. Born in Viborg, Denmark, he immigrated to the U. S. in the 1880s, with his wife and three small children, who were four years of age and under. Jorgina Lind Eye (1861-1936) was born in Horsens, Denmark, where her father, Carl Christian Lind, was said to be a merchant. Jens and Jorgina changed their names to James and Jenny when they came to this country.
  • Mathias and Wilhelmina Holm Rundquist, Sweden (18 KB)
My great-grandfather, Mathias, immigrated to the U. S. in the 1870s to work as a coal miner. He met Wilhelmina (Minnie) in the small Iowa coal town where they both lived. He was 31 when they married and she was 17! Mat and Minnie eventually homesteaded in Nebraska, reared nine children, and finally opened a prosperous general store in a town near their homestead. Mat was born in Säfsnäs sn., Dalarna, Sweden. Minnie was born in Skönberga, Östergötland, Sweden.
