This is a record of the descendants of Hark Watts, my great-great-grandfather, who we believe was born in 1827 in Mississippi. He was married to Rose who we also believe was born in about 1835 in Mississippi. After the Civil War they raised their family in Lamar County in an area they called Little River. This is situated between Hattiesburg, Miss., on the East and Columbia, Miss. on the West. They homesteaded a section of land, about 360 acres. After slavery they divided the land between their children when they became adults: Bart, Orange, John, Rubin, Tom, Samuel, Ann, Matilda, and Susie Watts. Although Hark and Rose were slaves, with little or no education, they cleared sections to build homes and raise their families. They farmed their land and made a good living. They promised never to sell the land to white people, and that the land would always belong to someone in the Watts family. Generations since then have forgotten the promise. Some have lost their land due to not paying taxes. Some have sold land for profit.

This information was given to me from different family members from 1993 though the present. Most of the older records of names and births were obtained through Census Records as early as 1880. In 1993, I moved to Mississippi from California and began meeting more of the Watts Family. At family reunions and at funerals since then I have compiled these facts the way they were given to me. I believe it to be true.

As always, I'd like to know of any other information that should be added to these records, please contact me with permission to incorporate it into our family record. Any old pictures you might have of our family would be greatly appreciated, also.

Love to all!
Your cousin, Olga
