Notes for W
The following is a report of William Nelson's obituary, as it appeared in a local newspaper at the time of his death, on Aug. 24, 1894.
"We are called upon to chronicle the death of one of Arran's oldest settlers, Mr. William Nelson. He was a native of County Monaghan, Ireland, and emigrated in 1848, and settled in the township of Caledon, county Dufferin. In the spring of 1853, he came to the County of Bruce in search of land and after travelling through a good portion of the townships of Brant and Saugeen, he finally located in Arran where he took up some 400 acres of land, and since purchased 200 more. He travelled all the distance from Orangeville to Southampton on foot. He returned again in the fall of the same year, and proceeded to erect his first log cabin on one of the farms he had selected, on a beautiful slope facing Lake Arran, which at the time swarmed with fish and myriads of water fowl; this was a great blessing to the early settler. In those days fish were caught and ducks were shot as one of the necessities of life, and not for the sport of things as now. During the time he was erecting his cabin, he knew what it was to sleep under some poles leaned up against a tree and covered with hemlock brush. In the spring of 1854 he brought his family to their new home, and set to work with a will to clear up his new land; being assisted by a careful wife, and a willing family, was successful. Among some of the names of the first settlers we have heard him mention were McNab, Powell, Swinton, Latimer, Chabott, Campbell, and Hamilton, an old resident of Tara. He gave the land over to his sons some 12 years ago, and came to the village of Elsinore, where he resided since. On Friday the 24th of August, he passed away, surrounded by most of his family. During the last 3 years, he at times suffered a great deal of pain, but bore it patiently, seldom complaining. He was 83 years of age and leaves a widow, who in all probability will soon sleep beside him. He also leaves five sons, three daughters, twenty grandsons, twenty-four granddaughters, and 2 great-grand-children.
The funeral took place on Sabbath, Rev. Mr. Mowat, pastor of the Presbyterian Church officiated, using for his text some portions of scripture which he had often heard the deceased repeat. The funeral was one of the largest ever seen in these parts. The remains were borne to their last resting place by six of his grandsons."

NOTE: The cemetery is located one concession south of Elsinore just west of side road #15 in the Elsinore cemetery which was part of the Nelson property. A large 8-10 foot high monument stands in the middle of the cemetery towering over all others.
Two smaller head stone markers belong to two infant Nelson's with no legible dates inscribed.
