Notes for GIDEON NOBLE LEWIS: Found in 1870 Census, Ashtabula County, Ohio, Microcopy No. 593, Roll 1170, Volume 2 (1-422A), page 359. Lewis, Gideon N., 35 m w Farmer 3100 200 New York; Margaret, 31 f w Keeping house Ohio; Charles E. 12 m w Ohio; Truman J. 10 m w Ohio; Hetty, 8, f w Ohio; Katy 6 f w Ohio; Mary A. 4 f w Ohio; Albert E. 4/12 m w Ohio. Gideon's death documented in newspaper articles and in the Ashtabula County Death Records 1867-1908, pages 38/39. Age at death is 36, birthplace, NY. Killed by a falling tree. From the Ashtabula Weekly Telegraph, Saturday, October 28, 1871, page 3: "A Sad and Fatal Accident occurred near the Lake Shore, within the bounds of Saybrook, on Monday morning last. Mr. Gideon N. Lewis was chopping in the woods near his house, and with the design of getting down a hickory that had lodged, in falling, against another tree, had felled a maple so as to fall across the hickory, but this failed to bring it down, and lodged itself against the leaning one. He then, so far as could be judged--for he was alone--from a survey of the ground, passed up the body of the maple some fifteen feet, and cut a call down on the upper side, so far as seemed safe, and then attempted to cut it off from the ground, standing, of course, nearly under it. In falling, he was caught and carried down with it, the body and projecting branch falling across the lower part of his hard and breast, probably so crushing the frame as to cause speedy death. When found, the body was still warm, though perhaps an hour or two after the accident, and still held by the weight of the top part, which slid and slewed in its fall. Mr. Lewis was in this 37th year, and leaves a family--wife and six children, the eldest of which is 14 years. He was a Trustee of the Township of Saybrook, an earnest, useful and consistent member of the M. E. Church of this place, and a man that enjoyed the respect and confidence of all that knew him. The blow is severely felt by the family and the bereaved wife and mother seems ready to sink under the affliction." From the Ashtabula Weekly Telegraph, Saturday, November 4, 1871, page 3: "Editor Telegraph: Your last issue contained a notice of the death of an esteemed citizen of this town--Mr. Gideon N. Lewis. In his death we have indeed met with an almost irreparable loss, and whose place it will be hard to fill. He was honored and truted many times by the people of Saybrook, and that trust and confidence was never misplaced. As a man he was singularly upright and honest; as a friend, he was true as steel; as a christian, he was a devoted follower of his Master, and his example we may all try to emulate. Mr. Lewis was township trustee at the time of his death, and it became the duty of the Justices of the Peace to fill the vancy, and they promptly appointed Mr. Ephraim Wade, who has qualified and entered upon his duties." From the Ashtabula Weekly Telegraph, Saturday,November 18, 1871, page 3: "Editor Telegraph: The glorious autumn weather has enabled our farmers to secure their abundant crops in good season, and only the laggard need husk his corn with cold fingers. Kind friends turned out and husked Mrs. Gideon Lewis's corn the other day, which showed the sympathy of the people of Saybrook with the afflicted family, and the esteem with which Mr. Lewis was regarded." |
