The father of John and Samuel Gatchell, in all probability, was English. There are indications documented in the "Topographical Dictionary of 2885 English Emigrants to New England, 1620-1650" by Charles Edward Banks (1967) that the Gatchell brothers John and Samuel came from West Monkton, Somersetshire, England. The Mary & John Clearing House, vol. 19, part three, suggests the possibility that they came to America on the ship "Hopewell" which sailed from Weymouth, England, in 1635.

Some researchers believe the father of John and Samuel Gatchell may have been named Thomas Gatchell, and that this Thomas Gatchell married Susan Peach in 1609 in Pitminster, Somerset, England. The timing and location of this marriage appear to indicate a strong possibility that they are indeed the parents of John and Samuel Gatchell, who came to America. It is worthy to note that John Gatchell, Samuel's brother, named two of his children Thomas and Henry. Thomas Gatchell of England, who married Susan Peach, had a brother named Henry, who owned property in the Somerset, England, area. These names for John's sons support the argument that Thomas Gatchell of Somerset, England, is indeed the father of both John and Samuel.

This family history is an attempt to compile together all known descendants of the brothers John and Samuel Gatchell.
