Notes for J
EREMIAH GATCHELL:
According to "The Inter-Colonial Grimstone Boude and His Family" by Francis James Dallett, F. A. S. G., published in "The Genealogist" (New York), Vol. 2, 1981, Jeremiah Gatchell moved from Marblehead, Massachusetts, to Philadelphia, most likely at the suggestion of his wife's brother Grimstone Boude, who had already moved from the Boston-Marblehead area to Philadelphia.

His wife at the time, Elizabeth Boude, evidently remained in Marblehead; and on May 12, 1704, Jeremiah Gatchell gave Elizabeth power of attorney to dispose of his property in Essex County, Massachusetts. Author Francis Dallett cites the New England Historical & Genealogical Register 10:70 (1856) for the power of attorney record. Dallett then cites the Essex County, Massachusetts, deeds, 65:241-242, as follows: In the 1704 power of attorney, Jeremiah Gatchell refers to himself as "late of ye County of Essex in ye Collony of ye Massachusetts In New Engd but now of ye City of Philadelphia In the Province of Pensilvania".

In the fall of 1713 Jeremiah's son and namesake, Jeremiah Gatchell, Jr., visited his father in Philadelphia in order that Jeremiah Gatchell Sr. could officially transfer ownership of his Marblehead properties to his son. Dallett reports this transfer from the Essex County, Massachusetts, deeds (27:46-48) as follows: "On 23 October 1713 Jeremiah Gatchell 'the Elder of Philadelphia wheelwright' conveyed the three 10-acre lots in Marblehead received from his parents to Jeremiah Gatchell, junior, 'of Marblehead but now in Philadelphia', who had already held them under lease, the consideration being love and affection and the yearly rent of £6 to his father as well as a provision that within a year of the grantor's death the grantee would pay £100 to Joseph Gatchell and Dorothy Gatchell or, if they be dead, to Sarah and Lydia Gatchell, his brother and sisters." Dallett states that Jeremiah, Jr.; Joseph and Dorothy all remained in Marblehead. Elisha Gatchell, the eldest son of Jeremiah Gatchell, Sr., witnessed this deed transaction, and Elisha, Sarah and Lydia all stayed in Philadelphia with their father.

Notes for H
ANNAH SAITH:
Hannah's maiden name generally has been cited with the 'Saith' spelling, but other references have used the much more common name of 'Smith' as the spelling. However, all these citations for both spellings, such as the 'Saith' reference in the Early Massachusetts Marriages, Vol. III, page 26, really represent second-hand references.

In the fall 1985 issue of "The Genealogist", genealogy researchers Clayton R. Adams and Francis James Dallet, F.A.S.G., discussed Hannah's last name in the article "Some Additons and Corrections to the Boude Pedigree", page 239, note #9. This note argues that the 'Saith' spelling is morely likely in this case.

The note indicates that the marriage of Jeremiah Gatchell to Hannah Saith appears in Roger D. Joslyn, F.A.S.G., ed. and comp., "Vital Records of Charlestown, Massachusetts to the Year 1850", 1 (Boston, 1984), page 86. But in the same note, Adams and Dallet state that "Saith" was read as "Smith" by "Clarence Almon Torrey: Dallett, p. 105, n. 83." While the 'Smith' name may in fact be correct, Adams and Dallet point out that the Saith name, and variants Says and Sayes, were found locally at the time. They wrote that Hannah may have been a daughter of Christopher and Hannah Says. Or at least they said this was suggested by Thomas Bellows Wyman in his compilation, "Genealogies and Estates of Charlestown in the County of Middlesex... 1629-1818" (Boston, 1879), page 841. But then they also note a contradictory citation, this one by Deloraine P. Corey in "The History of Malden, Massachusetts, 1733-1875" (Malden, 1899), page 378, that claims Hannah Says, daughter of Christopher and Hannah Says, was actually the wife of James Millinor, rather than Jeremiah Gatchell.

It could be that the unusual spelling of 'Saith' was an early researcher's misinterpretation of the actual script as written in the early records recording this marriage, or even a printer's error. Another citation, such as a birth record, parental records or probate records could clear up the matter, but with all the research that's been done, it's unlikely there's anything out there -- 300 years after the fact -- that will definitely prove Hannah's birth surname. Currently, though, it appears the 'Saith' spelling, rather than 'Smith', is favored as the more likely of the two spellings.

LIZABETH BOUDE:
All descendants of Elizabeth Boude and Jeremiah Gatchell are distant cousins of Lady Diana Frances Spencer, Princess of Wales, who in 1981 married Prince Charles Windsor, in 2002 the first in line as heir to the throne of England. Consequently, all such Gatchell descendants are also cousins to Diana's sons Prince William and Prince Harry, who are respectively 2nd and 3rd in line as heirs. Elizabeth Boude's parents were the 7th great grandparents of Diana Frances Spencer.

Elizabeth Boude Gatchell apparently maintained an independent spirit, somewhat removed from her husband. In the early 1700s when her husband Jeremiah Gatchell followed her brother to Philadelphia, Elizabeth apparently either remained in or returned to Massachusetts to care for the land owned by her husband. According to "The Inter-Colonial Grimstone Boude and His Family" by Francis James Dallett, F. A. S. G., published in "The Genealogist" (New York), Vol. 2, 1981, a 1704 record in the Essex County, Massachusetts, deeds (65:241-42) gave her power of attorney to dispose of Jeremiah's property remaining in Essex County, Massachusetts. This property was kept in the family though, and in 1713 was deeded over to Jeremiah Gatchell, Jr., who also had remained behind in Massachusetts.

Without her husband, Elizabeth joined the First Church in Salem in August 1683, and she alone was among 50 members at Marblehead, Massachusetts, who petitioned for their own church. On August 13, 1684, the Church of Marblehead officially gathered, and Elizabeth had five of her children by Jeremiah Gatchell baptized in that church. But in each baptismal record, Elizabeth alone is shown as the parental sponsor.

Also in 1684, Elizabeth filed court charges of blasphemy against her brother-in-law, Joseph Gatchell. As a result, Joseph was placed in the pillory and had his tongue pierced with a hot iron.

Author Dallet also cites another Essex County court record in his article "The Inter-Colonial Grimstone Boude and His Family" where he states that "Church attendance was not entirely serene for Elizabeth, who was accused in 1694/5 of yanking another woman out of her seat while at worship." Definitely a strong-willed, independent-minded woman!

Notes for J
OSEPH GATCHELL:
He was a tailor and fathered a baby in 1680. He was charged with fathering a child to Bethiah Gatchell, wife of his brother Samuel.

It appears Joseph Gatchell was not Christian in his beliefs and spoke freely about it. As a result, in the times of puritan justice, he ended up in the public "pillory" and had his tongue pierced/branded with a hot iron, as evidenced by the narrative below. He was tried for heresy, and the main witness against him was his sister-in-law, Elizabeth, wife of his brother Jeremiah Gatchell. In July 1879, Henry F. Waters wrote in the New England Historical and Genealogical Review: In the Suffolk County Court files, that in July 1684, Joseph Gatchell of Marblehead was presented "that he not hauing the feare of God before his eyes being instigated by the divill at the house of Jeremiah Gatchell in discourse abt generall Salvation (wch he sd was his beleife) & that all men should be saved, being answered that our Saviour had sent forth his disciples and gaue them comission to preach the Gospell and that whosoever Repents and beleives shall be saued; to which Joseph Gatchell answered if it be so he was an Imperfect saviour and a foole. And this was a yeare agoe and somewhat more, as p' the evidences of Elizabeth Gatchell and since in the moneth of March last past and at other times and places hath uttered seuirall blasphemous speeches saying ther was no God divill or hell as in and by their presences may appeare contrary to the peace of our Souiraigne Lord the King his croune and dignity the law of God & of this Jurisdiction." He was "sentenced to be returnd from this place to the pillory to haue his head and hand put in, have his toung drawne forth out of his mouth and peirct through wth a hott Iron then to be returnd to the prison there to Remayne until he sattisfye and pay all ye charges of his tryall and ffees of Court wch came seuen pounds."

According to the Massachusetts & Maine Family Histories, 1650s-1930s, a Martha Wiles (Wild) and John Putnam testified in 1682 in a case in which Joseph Gatchell was accused of "presumptuous evils which are next door to forgery."

OSEPH GATCHELL and JUDITH is:
16. i.   BEZABEEL4 GATCHELL, b. Bef. 1685.

7. THOMAS3 GATCHEL (JOHN2 GATCHELL, UNKNOWN FATHER1) was born Bef. 1660, and died Bet. 16 Feb 1731/32 - 04 Jul 1734 in Bristol County, Massachusetts. He married (1) MARY. She was born Unknown, and died Abt. May 1738 in Bristol County, Massachusetts. He married (2) SARAH BRAYTON Abt. 1680 in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts. She was born Unknown.

Notes for T
HOMAS GATCHEL:
Thomas Gatchel's estate was probated on Nov. 21, 1738. He wrote his will on February 16th in "the fifth year of the Reigne of our Sovereigne Lord the King George," which would be 1732. The will also states that Thomas Gatchel was in "good health" at the time. The will of his wife Mary was probated on May 16, 1738, and the probate record indicates that, at the time, Mary was a widow. So it is safe to say that Thomas Gatchel died between the date of his own will and the date of probate action on Mary's will. Additionally, his wife Mary's own will, which was dated July 4th, 1734, does not mention Thomas, only Thomas Gatchel's children. This would imply that the death of Thomas occurred by July 4th of 1734.

According to the History of Salem, Vol. III (1671-1716), Domesticity, pages 184-188, Thomas Gatchell, along with his father John and mother Wibera, were among a group of people charged in connection the "great Corwin burglary". On March 6, 1683/1684, a total equal to £500 of English, New England and Spanish money was stolen in the night from the house of Captain George Corwin. A Bethiah Gatchell was also charged, and a Joseph Gatchell was named during trial questioning of the accused. Others charged in the crime included Nathaniel Pickman, John Collier, William Lord, Sr., Reuben Guppy, Jane Lord, Abigail Guppy, Deborah Winter, Richard Harris, Thomas Russell, William Godsoe and David ("Mr. Pilgrim's negro").

The History of Salem account indicates that many of these individuals were convicted for their part in this crime. The stiffest punishment was meted out to William Godsoe and his wife Elizabeth, who originally conceived the crime. They were each branded with the letter 'B' on their forehead, whipped 39 lashes and fined £10. Among the others, both Thomas Gatchell and his father John Gatchell were convicted for their part as accessories to the burglary. They were each ordered to pay treble damages, be whipped severely 39 lashes or pay £10.

Mary, wife of Thomas Gatchel of Bristol County, Massachusetts, was named as the executor for the estate of Thomas Gatchel in the will for Thomas. However, by order of the Bristol County officials on November 21, 1738, a James Tripp of Dartmouth, Massachusetts was named administrator of the estate for Thomas Gatchel because Thomas' wife Mary was deceased before the will was proved.
