2. ROBERT BOYD2 NEWELL (JAMES1) was born December 19, 1824 in NC, and died Bef. 1910 in AL (Tuscaloosa). He married (1) MARY ANN HERRIN December 10, 1846 in Tuscaloosa Co., AL. He married (2) MATILDA (TELITHA) KELLY Abt. 1859, daughter of HIRAM KELLY and SUSANNAH WILLIAMS. She was born Abt. 1837 in AL (Tuscaloosa), and died Aft. 1920 in Tuscaloosa Co., AL.

Notes for ROBERT BOYD NEWELL:
      Robert has not been found on either the 1850 nor 1860 censuses yet. On the 1855 Alabama State census for Tuscaloosa Co., he is listed with two males <21 and no females. Only Rufus, born Nov 6, 1852, has been identified.
      I have long suspected that the Reuben Newell on the 1860 Tuscaloosa census adjacent to James and Sarah, may actually be Robert Boyd Newell. Reuben's son, William, born c1850 matches age with the William J. Newell who is living with James and Sarah on the 1870 census. However, there is a conflict with John, born c1852, and Rufus, born Nov. 6, 1852. A possible explanation would be that John was born late 1851 - early 1852 and might have died before the 1855 census was taken.

      Written "Robbert" 60 NC NC NC in 1880 a farmer. Census header overwritten with "Steen's Beat."
      On Mar 13, 1889, Robert filed a petition in Tuscaloosa Co., AL declining to administer the estate of Hiram Kelly whose will named his sole heirs as Matilda Kelly, wife of Robert, and Lively Kelly. Robert identifed himself as Hiram Kelly's son-in-law.
      Written "Robert" 84 AL AL AL in 1900 and living with daughter Sylvania (Newell) Dollar and her children. His birth is listed "Dec 1815" (Boyd Bible states Dec 1824). The 1900 census also states Robert and Matilda have been married 30 years implying ca1870 as marriage date, however, 1870 census does not indicate marriage within the past year.

      Written "Metida" 58 AL AL AL in 1900 and gives birthdate as Jan 1842. She has borne five children and five living.
      Appears to be written "Fildy" 68 AL AL AL in 1910 widowed and living with the George and Susan (Newell) Dockery family labeled "mother-in-law. She has borne five children and all living. Transcribed "Feldy."
      Written "Tilda Newel" 87 AL AL AL in 1920 widowed and living with George and Susan Dockery family labeled "mother-in-law."

3. MATTHEW PITMAN2 NEWELL (JAMES1) was born September 17, 1827 in TN (or NC), and died October 16, 1906 in Franklin Co., AL. He married (1) REBECCA S. BRANDON Abt. 1850, daughter of NATHANIEL BRANDON and AMANDA SIZEMORE. She was born March 15, 1830 in AL, and died September 26, 1885 in Lamar Co., AL. He married (2) SARAH CAROLINE KIRK March 31, 1887 in Fayette Co., AL, daughter of JOHN KIRK and NANCY (--?--). She was born August 21, 1844 in AL, and died March 6, 1926 in Lamar Co., AL.

      Doc #9714 identifies two contiguous parcels of land issued to Mathew Newell to include the W1/2SW1/4 in Sec 7 T8S/R10W and S1/2SE1/4 in Sec 12 T8S/R11W, about 160 acres
      In 1900, another Matthew age 68 GA and wife Martha age 64 GA were on the Franklin Co., AL census at Newburg. I have not established any relationship to our Newell clan.
      A U. S. Veterans Cemetery record indicates Matthew is buried in the Thomas Family Cemetery as a PVT U. S. Army Civil War. Previous family notes indicated he was buried in Motes-Watson Cemetery, Franklin Co., AL in unmarked grave adjacent to Lee Roy Thomas and wife Martha.
