Generation No. 13

13. ALICE EVALEE13 BOREN (MANECA M.12 KNOWLES, NANCY11 STONE, THOMAS ALLEN10, SPENCER STOON OR9, THOMAS8, THOMAS7, THOMAS6, JOHN5, CAPT. WILLIAM4, JOHN3, RICHARD DE CROSTON2, WILLIAM1) was born 1869 in Guilford Township, Wilson Co., Kansas, and died Unknown in Sayre, Oklahoma. She married ZACHARY TAYLOR HICKS I 1886 in Cowlington, Leflore, Indian Territory, son of WILLIAM HICKS and ARLIE BOWLES. He was born July 04, 1845 in or 1846 Cherokee Nation Reservation, and died 1925 in Sequeah near Claremore, Oklahoma.

Notes for Z
ACHARY TAYLOR HICKS I:
Zachary Taylor Hicks Sr. survived the Battle of Pea Ridge. He was quite young at the time, 15 or so, but was considered old enough because "he fit the boots". He may have fought with a regiment of Cherokees. May be able to find more through Confederate Records. The story is that he was buried with a small tobacco sack containing a 10 cent piece for each of his children and a 5 cent piece for each of his grandchildren. His family is listed on the Drennen Roll 1852 page for Hicks. Also on the Guoin Miller and Dawes Rolls for Cherokees. He liked to celebrate his birthday by lighting sticks of dynamite and throwing them in the river, then he and his family ate the resulting fish. He also liked to buy peanut butter by the gallon and 5 pound of crackers and eating it with his family.

Descendants of William "Bill" Hicks, Jr.

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM "BILL"3 HICKS, JR. (WILLIAM ABRAHAM2, NATHAN1) was born Abt. 1812 in Georgia, and died Jul 1862. He married ARLIE "OLLIE" BOWLES, daughter of BOWLES and MARGARET DOWNING. She was born Abt. 1830 in Georgia, and died Aug 26, 1879.

Notes for WILLIAM "BILL" HICKS, JR.:
Detachment: 1836, 37-A Pre 1837

In the Cherokee emigration rolls: Arrived in Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, May 8, 1834. Shipped by Lt. Joseph W. Harris on boat/wagon train, age under 25, emigrated from Oothcaloga, Georgia.

According to son, Taylor Hicks', Cherokee Enrollment questionnaire, dated Oct 5, 1906, in 1851 his mother and father, Bill Hicks and Ollie were living in Cherokee Co., Kansas, near Baxter Springs in what was known as "neutral land." This was the Cherokee Neutral Lands in southeast Kansas.

When asked what right does he claim a share, he said, "myself, my mother, Ollie Hicks, and my grandmother, Margaret Mellons" sp) (should be Nellums). On question 19, when he is asked to name "all of their children," he assumes they mean his grandparents' children. Since he does not know anything about his paternal grandparents, he names Margaret Nellums' children, Aggie Phariss" and "Bitsy Phariss," both Margaret's daughters from her previous marriage to Samuel Bledsoe Gore.

Notes for ALEXANDER JAMES NICKENS:
A.J. was named for his grandfathers, Alexander Jacks and James Nickens. >From 1935 until 1941 he worked as a plumbing and steamfitting contractor in oil fields and refineries. For one year from 1941 until 1942 he drove a truck for the U.S. Civil Service. From 1942 to 1944 he worked as a gas appliance serviceman at Sheppard Field, Texas, later known as Sheppard Air Force Base. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from Feb. 4, 1944 until Sept. 30, 1945. He was in the 106th Infantry, 422nd Regiment. His unit went to the front lines about Dec. 7, 1944, and occupied positions in Belgium around the Schnee Eifel, a rocky wooded ridge 10 miles long when they met with a strong German offensive beginning Dec. 16, and with the 106th regiment suffering 8,663 casualities, including 416 killed and 1,246 wounded. Most of the division's 7,001 missing men were taken prisoners. A handwritten account of events by A.J. after his return home states he was captured on the morning of Dec. 19, 1944, and was marched about 30 miles to a town by the name of "Jerlsteine" where he was kept until Dec. 23 when he says they were loaded up in boxcars. On the afternoon of Dec. 24 American or British planes strafed the boxcars that they were locked up in and there were about 100 of them wounded. The boxcar he was in had 55 prisoners and they were all wounded and three or four dead. The next morning, Dec. 25, the main body of men started out marching, but A.J. was wounded so he was left behind in the boxcars with a total of 72 men who were wounded. He said at least 12 men died there at his last count, and they buried them. He was there until Jan. 9 and then was part of a group of 28 that they marched for six miles where they joined up with another group of 92 officers and enlisted men. The next morning they started a long march to Limburg, Germany, Stalag 12A. He said, "It took us six days to make it and we were nearly all starved." He stayed there for 12 days and then was put on boxcars and sent to a camp called Stalag 2A, at "Newfrondburg," arriving there on Feb. 1, 1945. He was there until May 1, 1945, when while working out on a farm "commando" (labor gang) he was liberated by some Russians. He said, "The Russians were good to me till I got back to the British lines, and the British were O.K. till I got back to the American camps."
