Descendants of Abel Roberts

Generation No. 1

1. ABEL2 ROBERTS (JOHN1) was born Bet. 1795 - 1796 in North Carolina, and died 1879 in Near Shady Grove, near Centre, Cherokee Co., AL. He married SARAH ANN MCGINNIS March 28, 1818, daughter of JOHN MCGINNIS and MARY HUSTON. She was born Bet. 1798 - 1799 in North Carolina, and died October 12, 1885 in Bartlet,Bell Co.Texas.

The family moved from North Carolina to Georgia in 1823, then to Alabama in 1857, Sarah moved to Texas in between 1882-1885 after Abel's death with Martin and Samuel.

Abel Roberts won land in the Cherokee Strip in Georgia after the Cherokee Removal in 1832 (The Trail of Tears) in which all Indians East of the Missippi River were forcably removed to the Oklahoma Territory after gold was found in Georgia, and Alabama. The Abel Roberts family was listed in the 1840 Census for Forsythe Co., Georgia pg. 285. The other Roberts also listed in this county were: Cornelius pg. 267, G. W. pg. 269, James pg. 267, Josiah pg. 269, and Martin pg. 279. This complete census in the "Georgia Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 5, March 1969."

In their will in Cherokee County (Cherokee Co. Records Page 97) it states "The heirs were as follows:
J. F. Battler, Sarah Roberts Battler, S. M. Whitworth, C. H. Hass, Judy Hass, Mary Roberts Dempsey, W. R. Whitworth, W. R. Whitworth.
