Notes for M
ARTIN MARION ROBERTS:
Martin M. Roberts, a veteran of both the Confederate and Union Armies during the Civil War was born in Hall County, Georgia. After the birth of their first son they moved to Alabama along with both sets of parents. In 1860 Martin M. went to Nevada to look for gold. While he was there their first daughter was born.
On 03/03/1862, Martin M. enlisted in the Confederate Army at Gadsden, Alabama, in Company A, 31st Alabama Infantry. He was captured in battle on June 15th, 1864 at Big Shanty, Georgia, and confined at Rock Island, Illinois. When given a choice of being placed in prison or joining the Union Army to guard or fight Indians, he enlisted 10/06/1864, in the Union Army. He was discharged 11/27/1865 at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, and returned to his family in the Leesburg and Centre area near Pollard's Bend on the Coosa River in Cherokee County. While he was away in the war another son was born in 1862.
In 1881 Martin M. and Eliza left their oldest son and his young family behind in Alabama, and with their other six children, came to Texas. The children remembered most making much of the long, tiresome trip by walking behind their wagon, and the exciting crossing of the Mississippi River. They stopped in Grayson County for a time, then in the latter part of 1882, the Roberts family moved to a farm west of Bartlett, Bell County, here some of the children grew up, some married, and the family was active in the Baptist church.
In 1906 when several family members moved to Haskell County, Texas Martin M. moved with them. As he had most of his life, he engaged in farming there until a year before his death at the age of 92.

"Near Ophir in Forsythe Co., some of Sherman's foragers entered the home of Martin Roberts. One of the men found a Masonic apron in a dresser drawer, presented it to the squad leader, who happened to be a Mason. He ordered his men to stop the search and leave the premisis."
